Passionate music lovers often revere certain artists so fervently that they altogether miss the glories of anyone else performing the same works. In the fifties, I undervalued Renata Tebaldi and even Leontyne Price because they didn’t quite match the qualities of MY diva, Zinka Milanov. Thus, I skipped many glorious nights at the Old Met, all because of the narrow focus of my devotions.
Similarly one can acquire ideas of how a work should be done and hold those ideas up as standards that any new artist must meet to be taken seriously. I’m all for having standards, but when do these standards get in the way of perceiving the virtues of valid, new ways? Such is the story, of course, of Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger.” Such is also the reason that great but truly new artists such as Maria Callas have such a difficult time being accepted in their early careers. They take us out of our comfort zones into new ways of hearing familiar music. While I am not saying that 23-year-old Yundi Li is in the same league with Callas, he nonetheless shocked many of us at Meany Hall last week by playing Mozart and Schumann in ways that failed to sound like what we think of as Mozart and Schumann. I thoroughly agree with P-I critic Richard Campbell that his playing generally lacked the warmth and charm that we look for in these works (“Sonata No. 10 in C major” and “Carnival,” respectively). Yet, I found them exciting and above all musical.

In a gritty corner of China, maestro tutors piano prodigies
    By Tim Johnson
    Knight Ridder Newspapers

SHENZHEN, China - Just over the border from Hong Kong, the shriek of car horns and clatter of machinery fill the air of this gritty industrial city. Only inside the thick doors of the Shenzhen School of the Arts does the grating noise dissipate. Through those doors, many young pianists have found their Mecca. A few years back, Shenzhen lured one of China's most revered, if obscure, piano teachers to the local arts school. He, in turn, brought some promising students. Today, Dan Zhaoyi is considered a national treasure, a maestro with a knack for catapulting young students to the highest levels of international competition. His students have chalked up an extraordinary number of prizes. At the 2000 Frederick Chopin piano competition in Warsaw, Poland, Dan had two students in the contest's final round - an almost unheard of achievement. The 18-year-old prodigy who won, Li Yundi, has gone on to play the world's great concert halls. His other finalist, Chen Sa, also is making her mark.

The melody filled the concert hall in Duesseldorf in Germany, where the Schumann International Piano Competition was being held. The young Chinese boy's musical gift and technical skill deeply impressed both audiences and the adjudicators at this year's contest, held from January 25 to February 7. He was praised as "China's young Mozart" and granted a special talent award. "He makes the piano sing, and his exquisite interpretation, unique musical comprehension and adept skills really amazed us," said an adjudicator from Germany. Jia subsequently passed the teenager university student entry examination specially set for him by the Robert Schumann Hochschule, a renowned music university in Duesseldorf, Germany.

    Lehrjahre

Activists in Jakarta choked at the sight of General Wiranto being feted at a top hotel recently. Indonesia's former armed forces chief, an enthusiastic crooner, was launching the CD of sentimental favorites he recorded to raise funds for the local Red Cross. "Singing is one of my hobbies," he says. While the gala reaped $140,000 in donations, campaigners found Wiranto's effort ironic since the beneficiaries included Timorese refugees. Indonesia's human rights commission has linked the general to violence inflicted in East Timor last year by pro-Jakarta militias, which forced thousands to flee west. (Gala organizers even screened a video of refugees in a West Timor camp guarded by militias.) Wiranto's next project may prove to be just as controversial: a book analyzing post-reformasi issues.

    Amazing A-Mei
There may effectively be two Chinas, but there is only one Chang Huei-mei , or A-Mei . The 28-year-old Taiwanese pop diva combines just the right amount of sex appeal and musical attitude to win fans on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. But after singing the Taiwan anthem at President Chen Shui-bian's inauguration in May, the sultry star found herself banned in the mainland. Beijing authorities also ordered Coca-Cola to remove A-Mei from its advertising campaign. Such was the star's appeal, however, that the ban lasted a mere three months: the sanctions were dropped in August. Viewed as an unofficial goodwill ambassador between China and Taiwan, A-mei recently released a new album, Regardless? An aptly titled work.
