FRANK LA FORGE (1879-1953)
La Forge was a pupil of Leschetizky who earned considerable fame as accompanist to several famous singers. He made a few early Victor 78s of solo repertoire. One of them, the Chopin D-Flat Nocturne, may be heard on PEARL OPAL 9839 ("Pupils of Leschetizky"). FREDERIC LAMOND (1868-1948)
This Liszt pupil was a renowned Beethoven interpreter in his day. His electrical recordings are well covered on CD, the acoustical discs much less so. The BIDDULPH label has released two CDs of Lamond’s Beethoven (LHW 42 and 43). An entire CD of his Liszt interpretations can be found on APR 5504. PEARL 9911 offers many of the latter along with some additional material. A couple of Lamond selections can also be found on PEARL 9972 (“Pupils of Liszt”) WANDA LANDOWSKA (1879-1959)
ADELINA DE LARA (1872-1961)
YVONNE LEFÉBURE (1898-1986)
This important pupil of Cortot made almost all of her recordings during the LP era. However, a 1935 Victor set contains her world-premiere recording of the Variations, Interlude and Finale by Dukas, and it has been reissued on a PEARL CD (9495) that also offers examples of other French women pianists. ETHEL LEGINSKA (1886-1970)
The majority of this Leschetizky pupil’s recordings, those released by American Columbia in the late 1920s, have been reissued on Ivory Classics 72002. Unfortunately the poorly-equalized transfers make her performances sound much more dull than on the original 78s. Two of Leginska’s Columbia recordings can be found on PEARL 9839 (“Pupils of Leschetizky”)

Glazier Does Gershwin
July 4th is all the excuse I need to write about American composers or performers. This month I can do both simultaneously thanks to the superb recording of unusual Gershwin repertoire by the gifted 33-year-old American pianist Richard Glazier. The compact disc is called "Gershwin: Remembrance and Discovery," and it's on the Centaur label (CRC 2271). This CD is distributed by Qualiton Imports, though in this case it is "imported" from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a place where, it seems, both modern politicians and classical Centaurs live. Of course there is no more American composer than George Gershwin. It would be hard to find a compatriot who didn't love his music. He was the first highly successful cross-over composer, writing long-form "classical" music that instantly became as popular as his most popular tunes. In my view, Gershwin was one of the greatest tunesmiths in all music history, knocking out one gorgeous, unforgettable melody after another - an American Schubert, although, unlike poor Franz, very much appreciated in his own time. As you can imagine, I have quite a collection of Gershwin CDs, so it's hard for any solo pianist to come up with repertoire that isn't already on my shelves. But Glazier has managed to do this, and do it with such feeling, I knew on first hearing that here was a performer who loved Gershwin's music at least as much as I do.

His Works Radio The Kraft Music Hall In October, 1947, Al Jolson assumed the starring role on the Kraft Music Hall, a radio program he had introduced in the early 1930s. From October 2, 1947, through May 26, 1949, Al Jolson, along with pianist Oscar Levant, welcomed a variety of guests from the stage, screen, and radio to seventy-one broadcasts of the program. The usual format of the program included an introductory song by Jolson, a piano piece by Levant, a routine between the two principles, the guest star, and a closing number by Jolson. Depending on the guest star, this pattern could be altered, modified, or trashed completely. Although the original format included a female vocalist, Milenna Miller, added because the network and sponsors were afraid that Jolson could not carry the show himself, she was quietly dropped after the second show. Left-handed complement:Ursula Oppens, with Dennis Russell Davies at Carnegie Hall. L etting go of the 1998 George Gershwin centenary is proving to be difficult, if forgivably so. There is still plenty to learn about this most popular of serious American composers, especially the exact nature of the scores he wrote for his many Broadway shows. The American Composers Orchestra 's recent tribute, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies in Carnegie Hall, wasn't able to go into that, but the music was choice and the context fascinating. This was not just another run-through of overplayed Gershwin concert classics but an attempt to locate the composer amid the music of three contemporaries who were both associates and admirers: Oscar Levant and Vernon Duke, who, like their mentor, traveled between high- and lowbrow circles with varying degrees of discomfort, and Maurice Ravel, a fastidious classicist whose symbiotic relationship with Gershwin has yet to be properly studied. One can say that Inside Out picks up where Changeless (ECM 1392) left off thirteen years earlier. Recorded at two revelatory concerts at London's Royal Festival Hall in July 2000, it finds the Standards Trio leaving standards behind. True, they arrive at a reading of "When I Fall In Love" to close the proceedings but the route they take is the indirect one.

Katja Phillabaum, piano/Robert Goodberg, flute Gasparo GG-3-1004 3CD's TT: 209:50 "The Roumanian Jeanette MacDonald" was my first reaction to the voice of Yolanda Marcoulescou (d. 1991), the former star of the Bucharest Opera who taught voice at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee until her untimnely death from cancer. Absolutely unknown to me until I received this Gasparo set, which reissues select French-opera performances from Bucharest (with uncredited orchestra and conductor) as well as a host of French-language art-songs originally on Orion LP's, Marcoulescou's charming soprano is a grand coloratura instrument much in the tradition of light lyrics, like Pons, MacDonald, Sayao and even Sack and Korjus, with its mellifluous trills, roulades and falsetto scales and leaps. When Marcoulescou sings, "I am Titania, daughter of the air," she means it. Frankly, I am not fond of "head-resonance music," that flighty, showy stable of music designed to lionize coloratura melismas and throaty warbles on nonsense syllables. Barnum and Bailey gone classic, so far as I am concerned. Mado Robin will likely remain the queen of this brand of empty-headed virtuosity, what Toscanini used to call 'stupid, stupidissimo!'

Life
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania , into a musical and Orthodox Russian Jewish family, Levant moved to New York with his mother, Annie, in after the death of his father, Max. He began studying under Zygmunt Stojowski , a well-established piano pedagogue. In 1928 Levant traveled to Hollywood where his career turned for the better. During his stay, he met and befriended George Gershwin . In just twenty years, 1929-1948, he would go on to compose the music for more than twenty movies. Around Levant began composing on a serious note. This led to a request by Aaron Copland to play at the Yaddo Festival of contemporary American music on April 30 of that year. Successful, Levant began on a new orchestral work, Sinfonietta . He was also married and divorced to actress Barbara Woodell in 1932.

Oscar Levant
Raconteur, TV personality, concert pianist, self-described "verbal vampire" and sometime supporting player in films. Levant had originally planned a career as a concert pianist but, after playing in dance bands and becoming George Gershwin's protege, he devoted himself to interpreting the composer's works and, utilizing his own eccentric personality, played character parts or more accurately variations on his own character in films. He did, however, enjoy considerable success as a concert pianist and, at one point in the 1940s, was the highest paid concert artist in the US. Levant's film appearances, too, whether they were musicals or not, usually gave him a chance to play a piano as well. A chain-smoking neurotic and self-professed genius, Levant was noted for his mordant, scathing wit and finely honed insults often hurled against himself and his own hypochondria, manic depression and addictions.
While he retained his popularity and circle of friends into the 1960s, Levant's mood swings and increasingly erratic behavior began having professional repercussions. He was nearly banned from television after making a few scatological references concerning a prominent film actress during a 1960 telecast of his LA-based talk show. As time went on, only late-night host Jack Paar would risk having Levant as a guest, and when Paar left TV in 1965, so, for all intents and purposes, did Levant. In and out of rest homes and mental institutions during his last two decades (his final film, 1955's Cobweb, was significantly set in a sanitarium), he became dependent upon pain-killers and other prescription drugs. Despite his deteriorating physical and mental condition, he was able to turn out three superb autobiographical works, A Smattering of Ignorance, The Unimportance of Being Oscar and The Memoirs of an Amnesiac. Oscar Levant died of a heart attack in 1972 at the age of 66.
