Oscar Levant
Born Dec 27 1906
Died Aug 14 1972
Oscar Levant had a unique career. To quote an essay by Dixie Burge, Oscar Levant flourished as (and subsequently gave up each, one by one) gifted composer, concert pianist, radio personality, movie star, successful recording artist, best-selling author, talk-show host and quiz show panellist
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Levant composed and performed an eclectic range of popular and classical music. One bizarre highlight was the composition of a 15 minute opera, for, all of things, a Charlie Chan film. Well, to be fair, it was Charlie Chan at the Opera
A minor entry in the catalogue was the score for the Ginger Rogers movie In Person in 1935. This was his only work with Dorothy Fields who wrote the lyrics for three Levant melodies. All three songs are currently available on recordings by Bobby Short, Peter Mintun and Kay Thompson.

I'm a concert pianist. That's a pretentious way of saying I'm unemployed at the moment. Underneath this flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character. I have given up reading books; I find it takes my mind off myself. Happiness isn't something you experience, it's something you remember. The only difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is that the Democrats allow the poor to be corrupt, too. There is a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line. I once said cynically of a politician, "He'll double-cross that bridge when he comes to it". Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm schizophrenic, and so am I. http://www.classicalnotes.net/classics/gershwin.html
Composers' own records have unique value. More clearly than verbal descriptions or even written notation, they document the creator's conception, inspire understanding and guide further interpretation. Among the most essential of these is George Gershwin's brilliant 1924 record of his Rhapsody in Blue Apparently, at one point Gershwin had mentioned his desire to write a serious piece incorporating jazz and pop elements to Paul Whiteman, whose dance band was among the most popular in America. Nothing more came of this until January 3, 1924, when Whiteman announced an eclectic concert to take place at New York City's Aeolian Hall, with the bold purpose of displaying modern American music in all its varieties. Whiteman went on to proclaim that Gershwin was at work on a jazz concerto which would receive its premiere at the event. This was news to Gershwin, who read about it in the next day's paper along with the rest of the world. Gershwin protested that he had nothing in progress except a new show and was headed to Boston for a tryout. Worse yet, the Whiteman concert was slated for February 12! Despite the confusion, Whiteman apparently persuaded Gershwin to accept his commission. Gershwin later recalled that he formed the concept of the piece on his way to Boston, inspired in part by the rhythmic noises of the train ride. Upon returning to his New York apartment, he produced a two-piano score to be orchestrated by Whiteman's top arranger. Best remembered for his glitzy but trifling

ARS GRATIA TATUM
A Brief Biographical Sketch Of Art Tatum
The Greatest Pianist In Jazz
This is an unexpurgated, uncorrected text of a 1978 paper. I wrote this at a time when there was very little written about Tatum. Sadly that is still the case. There is one biography: James Lester's Too Marvelous For Words (1994, Oxford U.P.). But it is disappointing, too facile for my taste. Facts with insufficient insight. Arnold Laubich and Ray Spencer's Art Tatum: A Guide to His Recorded Music (1982, Scarecrow Press/ Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers) gives an overview of the great pianist's life; but it is primarily a discography, albeit a wonderful one. By far the greatest work on Tatum is Joseph A. Howard's Ph.D. 3-volume thesis The Improvisational Techniques of Art Tatum (1978, Dept. of Music - Case Western). However, his spectacular analysis is not commercially available, and its academic approach does clothe it with a certain opacity. Beyond these three works there are a few books of transcriptions and some articles, but still far too little on this profoundly great musician. The objective of this paper was to give a biographical analysis of Art Tatum and I think it stands the test of time. Based only on secondary sources, this work does not fancy itself error-free. It is but the synthesis, through combination, elimination and deduction of everything written by 1978 on Tatum - well, almost everything. It incorporates none of the post-1978 sources.
