French Flute Music
Patrick Gallois; Lydia Wong
Naxos 8.557328
Flute Sonata (1957) at a slightly slower tempo than usual, bringing out the poignant melancholy requested by the composer. They take the last movement about as fast as it could possibly be played, a Dionysian response to the sadness of the first two movements.
Le Merle noir
Sonatine
(1946) appears derivative of the music of the previous generation of composers. Embedded in it however is a darkly nostalgic lament for that earlier time, forever lost in the ashes of the War.
Chant de Linos
Sonatine
, (1942) moves from being pastoral to rhapsodic to playful to agitated. While the virtuosity required of both players is prodigious we always feel it is in the service of conveying the development of the music.
Sonatine , (1951), we enter the brave new world of the post war avant garde, serial technique, angular rhythms and melodic lines and lots of flutter-tonguing. Gallois and Wong are as convincing in this as in the more traditional harmonic and melodic language of the other works in the program.
These are masterful performances of masterpieces of the modern flute repertoire.

Who am I?
In 1988 I formed the classical recording company Analekta. In those days, there were not many recording companies in Canada. I felt this country produced an exceptional number of outstanding musicians, artists of international calibre, and I wanted to offer them a platform to showcase their talent. My desire to promote our best musicians grew into a passion, and became my artistic mission. Analekta quickly became the most important Canadian classical recording company, with a cruising rhythm of around 25 releases a year.
What am I doing right now?
Presently Analekta focuses on two points:

Passion developing a strong and solid direction; violinist James Ehnes with whom we just recorded a sixth CD and whose international scene continues to expand; and the Gryphon Trio, one of the best ensembles of its kind in the world.
As for the longer term,
(Analekta is distributed in the following countries: Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy.)

2. I understand your point about the quality recording as an indispensable calling-card for the musician, and also your point about how such musicians become cultural ambassadors, and therefore one would expect governments that support the arts to support such endeavours.

From July 9 to August 6: Shared Pleasures - Guaranteed Emotion Have you ever had the pleasure of sharing wonderful times with another person? With two others? Three others? Of course you have - musical pleasures. Multiplying the pleasures provided by artists, as well as those extended to the audience - doubling, tripling and quadrupling them - is what the 28 th season of the Festival de Lanaudière is all about. Concerts at Lanaudière are always exceptional events. But so many concerts this season involve multiple artists that the "exceptions" become the rule. Bold plans are in place for two and even three soloists to appear on the same program, and there are unique collaborations, renowned guest artists and programs full of flair in which the familiar sits alongside the novel. Put all this together and what you have is a truly magnificent season planned for the 28 th Festival de Lanaudière. At the Amphitheatre: Multiple pleasures and notable visiting artists: The 2005 season opens on July 9 with dash and originality.

The first recorded Vivaldi I remember hearing that made me suspect here was a composer of exceptionally beautiful Baroque music was an early EMI recording of The Four Seasons by Renato Fasano and Virtuosi di Roma. The first Vivaldi I heard, however, that made me suspect here was more than just a composer of exceptionally beautiful Baroque music was an LP by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic that contained the wacky Concerto for Diverse Instruments in C Major RV 558 . It was a grand display of instrumental fireworks in its time, and remains so today.
Now, Fabio Bondi and his wonderful Europa Galante players have concocted a fabulous CD of some of Vivaldi's delightfully tuneful concertos for mandolins but also an excellent selection of his concertos for various instruments, two of which are more or less commonly known as concertos con molti stromenti (it sounds better that way, like an ice cream) that include solo parts for instruments like two violini in tromba marina, two salmoe and some mysterious viole all'inglese soprani. The concertos are a stupefying demonstration of Vivaldi's use of color to dazzle and stun with not only virtuoso displays but to touch emotional spots with deeply, even profoundly beautiful moments of reflection and consolation.
The performances are so alert and intoxicated that there is not one dull bar. The sound is so spectacular that it can serve as a test piece for new components. And the liner notes by Toussaint Loviko have a virtuoso appeal of their own: Imagine, if you will, the girl musicians of Vivaldi's famous orchestra, hidden by grilles curtained with black gauze, changing instruments freely, "guaranteeing an effect of surprise." Indeed!

Throughout the day, the sound of music fills the halls of ECS. Staff and students who were here in the '80s remember Minna Shin as one of those musicians who could make you stop and listen for a moment, and aren't surprised to learn that she went on to a career as a concert pianist. As Dr.Shin is about to release her first CD, we thought this would be a good time to catch up with her.
I was at ECS from grade four to grade eleven. Already at the tender age of nine, I knew that I wanted to be a concert pianist. I have always enjoyed performing in public, being the centre of attention, and being able to touch the hearts of audiences with my performances.
How did your ECS education help to prepare you for what you are doing now?

Denis Levaillant INDEX
Biography F rench pianist and composer born in Paris, Denis Levaillant began studying the piano at the age of 6 in Nancy, recorded Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales when he was 12, and played the Mozart concerti with his professor, Magdeleine Mangin, who would remain his sole teacher.
D uring the 1970s, he gained very broad professional experience, working with choreographer Karin Waehner and accompanying Joseph Russilio's dance classes while studying orchestration and initiating himself in improvisation and jazz. In 1973, he obtained a degree in logic and the next year, a master's in philosophy (aesthetics).
H e also wrote his first radio work, Circus Virus , which would mark the beginnings of a long collaboration with Radio France (in 1974-75, under the direction of Louis Dandrel, he participated in a large-scale reform of programming on France-Musique). In addition, he worked for the circus with Les Barello, a group of jugglers and acrobats that he accompanied with saxophonist Pierre Rigaud in numerous performances. His passion for dramatic music then found itself confronted with the necessity of an immediately popular expression.

S eeking to develop this musical dramaturgy by all available means, he collaborated in the development of the first computer sound processing at INA-GRM* (
