Canadian Culture on the World Stage
Projecting Canadian culture around the world is one of the pillars of Canada's foreign policy. Canadian artists convey a sense of our values and interests through writing, music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. Their work adds depth and mutual appreciation to our international relations. The support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) helps Canadian artists showcase our culture abroad, and allows both artists and the public to benefit from cultural exchanges, international marketing assistance, and project development grants and training. The examples below are but a sample of the vast number of Canadian artists and cultural groups performing or staging their productions abroad in the coming months.

The transcription genre had become, until the invention of recording at the beginning of the twentieth century, no less than a major musical industry. Several composers of the first order chose to make these transcriptions, one of their aims being to promote their own works. Lessard:
Mathieu was a child piano prodigy and a precocious composer. He signed his first composition when he was 4. By the following year he was winning over audiences and critics in Paris with his faultless technique, and his compositions earned him the sobriquet of the little Mozart of Canada.
In Europe, in the age of Mozart and the other prodigious musicians, and even well beyond, all of life revolved about the arts, literature and music. Europe was an immense hothouse where a genius could develop fully. But in Canada, and indeed in all North America, things were different. There were countries to be built and societies to be organized. Large fortunes were then rare, and patrons were even rarer. Musical society was in its infancy. In short, the great European capitals were Canada's only reference in music. What is more, music, literature and painting had to share the public stage with costly and popular sporting events. Happily, in Europe the presence of so many musical and literary celebrities led to an emulation that survived economic and political revolutions.
That is how Mathieu, on his first voyage to Paris, had the privilege of living in this stimulating atmosphere and meeting masters of both composition and interpretation. But then came the war and the return home, where Mathieu did not find the same fervor among his peers. At the tender age of 15 he suffers a romantic disappointment, the result of the narrow-mindedness of the time. He also suffers from the undue pressure of parents wanting to continue in a lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. Overwork and a growing alcohol problem lead to a burnout.

    59. DELIAN SOCIETY PANTHEON
been successfully revived by the brilliant young Canadian pianist alain Lefèvre. Canadian Summer Canadian Summer for piano solo (alain Lefèvre)
    http://www.newmusicclassics.com/mathieu.html
His education interrupted by World War II, Mathieu was back in Paris to study with Arthur Honegger in 1947. Unable, however, to adjust to life in the French capital, the young composer returned shortly thereafter to his homeland. By the late 1940s his prospects began to wane. Although he continued to compose, adopting a late-romantic idiom reminiscent of Rachmaninoff, showmanship took increasing precedence over substance in his public appearances as a pianist. Mathieu managed to earn some income by teaching piano and composition, but withdrew increasingly from public life. His future seemed to take a turn for the better in 1960 at the time of his marriage to Marie-Ange Massicotte, but in 1962 Mathieu was shattered by the death of his father, Rodolphe, who had contracted a severe case of bronchial pneumonia. Chronic alcoholism finally took its toll, and Mathieu's life was cut short at just thirty-nine years of age in 1968. Today Mathieu is perhaps best known as the composer of the official theme music of the 1976 Montreal Olympics, an ironic posthumous tribute to a composer whose genius, had circumstances been more favorable, would almost certainly have been admired today in the great concert halls of the world. Nevertheless, his musical legacy is considerable, and includes not only a substantial number of pieces for piano solo in various genres, but also piano concertinos and concertos; symphonic poems and other works for orchestra; chamber music; and vocal works. The "Quebec" Concerto, an abridged version of Mathieu's Third Piano Concerto, was featured in the 1947 Canadian motion picture
