We believe that there is no substitute for being able to work and learn alongside the best in the world. We introduce gifted young people to individuals who have made a difference in the world and can make that difference work for others. We have identified artists and teachers - on the international platform and behind the scenes - who bring to the wider Samling community expertise, insight and above all inspiration. Their number is growing.
Sir Thomas Allen C.B.E. (Baritone) Patron of The Samling Foundation
Thomas Allen is an established star of the great opera houses of the world. At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where in 2001 he celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of his debut with the company, he has sung over forty roles. Last year, he also celebrated his twentieth anniversary of his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He has been particularly acclaimed for his Billy Budd, Pelleas, Eugene Onegin, Count Almaviva, Sixtus Beckmesser and, of course, Don Giovanni, roles he has made his own all over the world. Equally renowned on the concert platform, he appears in recital in the United Kingdom, throughout Europe, in Australia and America, and has appeared with the world's great orchestras and conductors. The greatest part of his repertoire has been extensively recorded.

Works of art and literature are listed under the names of their authors, except for those by Angela Thirkell (AT) herself.
The index is not comprehensive. Only the opening page number is given for some scenes or topics that may run on for several pages. Only some typical references are given to topics that occur frequently.
References to Three Houses , Angela Thirkell's childhood autobiography, are in bold type, thus: TH . As only the first five chapters of Three Score and Ten are by AT (this novel was completed by C. NOTE
Article Heading: Arthur, Beatrice
May 13, 1926- Actress Publication Statement: 1973 Biography from Current Biography Born Bernice Frankel, Beatrice Arthur is one of three children of Philip and Rebecca Frankel and a native of New York City. She is reluctant to disclose her birthdate, which according to Sidney Skolsky is May 13, 1926. During the Depression, when she was about eleven years old, her family, including an older sister and a younger sister, moved from New York to Cambridge, Maryland, where her father opened a clothing store. They were among the very few Jewish residents of that Eastern Shore town. Always tall, the dark-haired girl reached her adult height of five feet nine and a half inches by the time she was twelve. She took refuge from self-consciousness in going to the movies, collecting pictures of Hollywood actors, and daydreaming that she was a small, blonde, beautiful screen star.

died London 1 April 2004. In 1961 while Denis Stevens was Professor of Musicology at Columbia University he founded the Accademia Monteverdiana Inc. in the State of New York as a non-profit organisation. The aim of the foundation was to encourage and promote early and classical music, in particular that of Claudio Monteverdi, with publications, concerts and research. The inaugural concert took place that same year at the Bath Festival with Stevens and Yehudi Menuhin performing in the presence of one of the first AM trustees, Nadia Boulanger. For the next forty years the AM produced several hundred recordings of music for different labels ranging from the medieval to Beethoven, many of which are still available through the websites Schola Antiqua and Baroque Music Club as cds. Concerts were given throughout Europe and America including such grandiose and hallowed settings as the festivals of Salzburg and Westminster Abbey. Research was co-ordinated via the cream of Professor Stevens' graduate students to produce publications and editions of early music which were discovered in various libraries and then brought to the public often for the very first time in the 20th century.

This year was no different: the Matrics of 2003 could scarcely contain their excitement as the 26 August drew near.
At Wynberg, it is always red carpet day for our Matrics. Held at the Cape Sun Holiday Inn, the staff, Matrics and their partners gather in the foyer for a fruit cocktail before they enter the ballroom which is always beautifully decorated for the occasion. This year, tables were adorned with flowers, candles and butterflies and it was clear that the excitement of our most elegant and glamorous 2003 matriculants was difficult for them to contain: they could not resist visiting their friends and teachers at other tables to admire the spectacular outfits of their friends and introduce their partners to each other.
