"Basically, all my work is about creating self-awareness, about creating a point of entry into the work that is not in some other world, that is in the viewer's world. That's my goal - to make people feel like art is for them, that it's not just for millionaires to collect or for the public to stand in awe of." -The Albuquerque Tribune 7/9/91, by Ollie Reed Jr. ballet Jiang Qi We are honored to have Jiang Qi, Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Cincinnati, College- Conservatory of Music and alumni, (BFA & MFA) from the University of Utah, return to Salt Lake City to set a new work on Utah Ballet dancers to Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons". Deemed the premier artist of China by the Chinese government in 1985, Jiang Qi was also ballet master and principal dancer at Ballet West before his appointment as Asst.Professor at CCM in 2001. He has choreographed works for Ballet West, Utah Ballet, Utah Regional Ballet, Alaska Dance Theatre, Ballet West Conservatory, and Joffrey Midwest Summer Workshop. Costume design for Jiang Qi's "Spring" will be by Associate Professor Steve Rasmussen with lighting design by Associate Professor John Duffy.

George Crumb’s Apparition , from 1980, is a set of "elegiac songs and vocalises for soprano and amplified piano." It’s one of many musical settings of Walt Whitman’s "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d," Walt Whitman’s noble and poignant elegy for Abraham Lincoln. But unlike more conventional settings of this memorable text — such as Hindemith’s A Requiem for Those We Love — Crumb’s de-emphasizes its communal, ritualistic aspect. Instead of a national act of mourning, Crumb offers a hermetic, lonely meditation on the nature of death itself. Hindemith’s work comforts; Crumb’s haunts, even when the poetry moves from the mournful to the transcendent.

It started with Casals when he said that passion comes from what we learn from love love of nature, of music and of man. Most cellists I spoke with were are reluctant to even discuss passion without balancing the emotion with some kind of perspective. Having personally studied with cellist Janos Starker and after speaking with Carter Brey, it is clear to these artists that the pathway to expression from the soul is through discipline. Our History Past Festival Artists In August, 2005 The Festival at Sandpoint will celebrate its 23rd season of music in Sandpoint. What began in 1982 as a quest by a few pioneering and visionary classical music lovers to bring symphonic music to their town of 5,000, has expanded to become one of the largest arts organizations in Idaho. As The Festival has grown it has continued to honor its original mission to bring classical music to the area, however, it has expanded its vision to include quality jazz, blues, folk, world, and popular music. The Festival now draws audiences upwards of 20,000 per season throughout the region to its diverse and eclectic summer concert series, presented on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. In addition to its summer concert series, The Festival at Sandpoint offered a summer music institute from 1985-1996 under the guidance of Artistic Director Maestro Gunther Schuller. RUTH BAUER (Visual artist): NELL BENJAMIN: In 2004, John released a solo piano CD called On Richard Rodgers' Piano (chosen by Show Business Weekly as the best instrumental cabaret CD of the year) on which he performs some of Rodgers' best-loved songs on the composer's own Steinway. John and director Daisy Prince created a revue of his songs called It's Only Life, which was produced as part of the Summer Play Festival here in New York City. He is currently at work writing the songs for a new musical called A CATERED AFFAIR with a book by Harvey Fierstein. Scott and Paul’s musical, SIX OF ONE, received a workshop in May 2005 at CAP21. In February 2005, their songs were performed for the American Songbook Series at Lincoln Center, and the New Voices Collective at Symphony Space. They have also optioned a novel that they are busy musicalizing. Currently, Paul is a keyboardist at WICKED.

Kenneth Frazelle Kenneth Frazelle The career of composer and native North Carolinian Kenneth Frazelle shows the constant flow of a curious mind at work. His aesthetic inquiry has led to a rich and varied body of work encompassing the complex and non-tonal approach of his earliest creations, multi-disciplinary events, contemporary use of folk materials, and an idiosyncratic perspective on the classical forms of the past. These works have been commissioned by such notable performers as Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw and Paula Robison. Frazelle has been honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and he is the winner of the 2001 Barlow Prize. What the critics say... Catalogue of works... Subito Music Home Frazelle's creative path began in the South. His ancestors were North Carolina farmers as far back as the late seventeenth century. However, his parents joined the throngs of 1950's Americans who settled into suburban living. Music was part of his early life. "My dad had a great ear," Frazelle has said. "He could pick up an instrument, like a harmonica or a toy piano, and pick out tunes." Although his father died when Frazelle was only six years old, the son has vivid memories of a musical guessing game he and his father used to play. His mother placed young Kenneth in piano lessons at the age of nine. His teacher, Mrs. Gladys Sylvester, lived in a small town not far from the lands of his farming ancestors, yet "she really knew the piano and had very good training herself. She started me on Czerny and Chopin etudes." Frazelle's curiosity in the music he was playing led to the discovery of a treasure trove of LPs at the local library, immersing him in the sounds of European classical music. "I started checking out Stravinsky conducting his own music, Bartok, Varese, just anything I could get hold of. I really got into classical music through the piano."
