Return to RMRF Home page A Review of the ROCKY MOUNTAIN RAGTIME FESTIVAL 2004 By Fred Hoeptner Headlined this year by Max Morath, renowned musician entertainer who has been “living a ragtime life” for more than 40 years, the twelfth annual Rocky Mountain Ragtime Festival opened Thursday, July 14 in Boulder, CO and closed the following Monday evening having presented four major evening concerts, eleven hours of specialty concerts, a symposium session, a cabaret session, a Sunday brunch and dance, and indeterminate hours of late evening “afterburner” sessions. The Board of Directors chaired by Jack Rummel had obtained funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District of Denver, the Gordon Gamm Gift Fund, radio station KGNU, and the donations of many individuals. Musical Director Scott Kirby had accomplished his usual superb job of selecting performers and organizing the programs. In addition, a cadre of 26 indispensable volunteers helped to make the festival a roaring success. The venue for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday concerts and the symposium was again the comfortable air-conditioned and acoustically superb Unity Church, with the Saturday evening cabaret, after hour sessions, and Sunday brunch and dance at a new location, the elegant Millennium Harvest House Hotel. The Monday concert was held as usual at the Chris Finger Piano Company showroom in nearby Niwot. The Finger Company also furnished the superb Schimmel concert pianos used for the concerts. While the emphasis at the concerts remained on ragtime, this most eclectic of the festivals digressed as usual into other syncopated musical genres.

GAYLORD CARTER The 'Flicker Fingers' Who Brought The Perfect Song to Life By Chris Elliott Excerpted from the March/April 2001 issue of the ATOS journal, Theatre Organ Gaylord Carter, whose 80-year performance career defined "theatre organist," died November 20, 2000, at age 95. One of the world's renowned silent film accompanists and best-known theatre organists, this incredible human being gave sound to silent movies and introduced whole generations to the joy of the theatre pipe organ. Observing Gaylord in action at the Orpheum Theatre in 1987, Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith wrote: "...Carter is a national treasure and ought to be designated a historical monument." The organ was Gaylord's lifelong playground, and he used it as his special effects sound stage for silent films, producing thunderous music for battles, ominous chords for villains, and trick sounds for punch lines. "At its best, the music is felt but not noticed," he once told the Los Angeles Times . "When it's right, you should lose yourself in the picture."

An Evening with Sammy Cahn: It’s Almost Magic Also see Bob's review of Immoral Imperatives will be providing delightful don’t miss entertainment for lovers of The Great American Songbook through May 16 at Metuchen’s Forum Theatre. Sammy Cahn made a memorable 1972 appearance during the legendary early years of the Lyrics and Lyricists series at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y abetted by three singers and a pianist. The evening was so special that in 1974, with only the slightest of modifications, he brought his presentation to Broadway under the title Words and Music , where it was a critically acclaimed success. In subsequent years, he performed the show in London and on tour. The presentation written in its entirety by Cahn was an exceedingly fine work of popular art, but it is doubtful that many thought of it as anything more than a richly entertaining concert style entertainment by the extremely clever lyricist. With Cahn’s passing in 1993, I would not have expected to ever see it again. However, to our great good fortune, someone came up with the idea that the work could be revived with an actor performing the role of Sammy Cahn. And so, bedecked with a new title, it is now providing New Jersey audiences with one of the most delightfully entertaining evenings of the theatre season. If it is an evening of the “...and then I wrote” variety, and I’m not ready to concede that it is, it transcends the limitations of the genre. When seen with an actor portraying Cahn, it feels more like the one man plays celebrating such writers as Mark Twain and Charles Dickens which have enriched our stages for so many years. Unerringly, Cahn was able to organize the stories and observations which made him a terrific raconteur to fit what has proven to be an ideal format for a humorous autobiographical musical play which deserves to become part of our stage literature.
