Students of all levels are able to enroll; subsequently, their playing levels and interests are assessed and matched, creating the ideal learning environment. At the end of each semester, jury examinations are held in an open format, with all students enrolled present to serve as a supportive audience. Crossover coachings with other areas are encouraged so that students receive highly-detailed instruction. These coachings are coordinated by the chamber music area directors. An example of the product of crossover coaching is the Moores Piano Trio (Mikylah Myers - violin, Erika Johnson - cello, and Tomoko Isshiki, piano). This trio, having been coached by Cellist Laszlo Varga and Pianist Timothy Hester, achieved success on a national level by winning the silver medal in the 2000 Carmel Chamber Music Competition. Pre-formed groups are encouraged to enroll. For example, if a group would like to organize their own 'named' ensemble, they may work on approved literature and are encouraged to pursue national competitions and festivals to help establish future careers in chamber music.

His name is Jean-Yves Thibaudet. I've been aware of him being lauded as a great interpreter of Rachmaninoff, but have shied away from even listening to one of his recordings for a few years, because I feared the letdown would be too great, should he not live up to expectations (my breaking point came a couple of years ago, when I started hearing about this "wonderful new pianist, David Helfgott." I bought his CD of Rachmaninoff's Third Psycho That spiel off my chest; now back to Thibaudet: His understanding of Rachmaninoff is totally intuitive Thibaudet's performance of the Fourth Concerto exemplifies this observation. A very difficult piece to perform properly, this is the most satisfying recording I've heard of it, aside from the composer's own. Although the Fourth is generally thought of as a "heavy" concerto (especially as performed by Rachmaninoff and Ormandy), Thibaudet's touch is the very essence of light. He does not play with as heavy a hand as his accompanist, Vladimir Ashkenazy, did in his excellent 1984 recording with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The Shanghai Quartet Photo Credit: Christian Steiner Hailed by The Strad as "a foursome of uncommon refinement and musical distinction", the Shanghai Quartet celebrated the tenth year of their residency at the University of Richmond during the 1999-2000 season. In honor of this anniversary, the University of Richmond, along with the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C., commissioned a new work by Bright Sheng, which the Shanghai Quartet premiered in the spring of 2000. Beginning in 2001 the Shanghai Quartet will also be in residence as guest professors at the Shanghai Conservatory in China. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the quartet took second place two years later representing its country at the Portsmouth International String Quartet competition (now the Long International competition). In 1987 the Quartet won the prestigious Chicago Discovery Competition and embarked on an extensive touring career. They have been Ensemble-in-Residence at the Tanglewood and Ravinia Festivals and have made several appearances at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival and on its "Great Performers" series. After leaving China, The Shanghai Quartet was coached by the Tokyo String Quartet and the Vermeer Quartet. In addition, they were Graduate Ensemble-in-Residence at The Juilliard School, where they assisted the Juilliard String Quartet. Recording exclusively for Delos International, the Shanghai Quartet has an extensive discography. Their most recent releases include "The Flowering Stream", Chinese folk songs and tone poems by Zhou Long, with pipa player Min Xiao-Fen; and an Brahms album, pairing the Quartet No. 3 in B-Flat Major, Op. 67 and the String Quintet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 88, with Arnold Steinhardt.

By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic Published June 19, 2005 Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Engelbert Humperdinck, Itzhak Perlman, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Paul Anka - the tried and true anchor Ruth Eckerd Hall's 2005-06 season, released today. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," said Robert Freedman, chief executive of the hall in Clearwater. For something new, Freedman points to the Broadway series, previously announced, which includes Tampa Bay area premieres of Bombay Dreams and Dr. Dolittle. Newcomers to the hall include New Zealand crossover singer Hayley Westenra and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Andy Williams is making his first appearance in 15 years at the hall with a Christmas show. "For the first time we're going to be putting a classical package together where people can purchase four concerts for $99," Freedman said. "We're hoping that will spur ticket sales and get people coming out to hear classical music."

The concerts, celebrating 1,000 years of French music, will be held at Trinity Church Wall Street and will begin at one o'clock in the afternoon. A $2 donation is suggested to help defray production costs. While concertgoers will only see the results of his industry, Earl Tucker, head of Trinity's concert department, admits that this festival wasn't exactly easy in the making he describes it as a "daunting" project. Research began with the year 1100. "I had to try to make a festival that provided enough meat in ten weeks when, in fact, any single period of French music could have been given ten weeks on its own," says Tucker. Judging by the quality of performers, Tucker has done admirably. Ruth Laredo, "the First Lady of American piano," opens the festival with music by Maurice Ravel. September 6th's closing performance by New York Philomusica is of Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time," written when the composer was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp "a prophetic ending," says Tucker.

Jumppanen, a native of Finland, is the winner of the 2000 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which includes a prize of $5,000 and debut concerts in New York City and Washington, D.C. Born in Espoo, Finland, Jumppanen began to play the piano at age 5 at the Espoo Music Institute. He also studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
