About The World Piano Competition

Since 1956, the mission of The World Piano Competition Program has been to provide a continuum of services and role models to assist youth in need. Most of the young people we serve experience economical hardship and have never been exposed to emotion that is positive, constructive, and a source for growth. Central to their lives are their concerns about violence, incivility, hunger, and homelessness.
Our task is to provide a venue of excitement and compassion for them to do our best to prepare them for the enormous challenge they face as they approach adulthood.
Performances organized in 7 divisions featured 248 events for the past season.
The World Piano Competition : Annually The World Piano Competition serves approximately 750 children. Following Regional Evaluations of more than 550 applicants representing 35 countries The 46th World Piano Competition invited almost 150 contestants representing 18 countries to perform at the World Headquarters at the Aronoff Center For The Arts in Cincinnati. An international jury of 7 judges representing 6 countries awarded cash prizes and performance opportunities.
The Bach-Beethoven-Brahms Club (BBB) Educational Outreach Program : More than 1200 Tri-State students representing 50 schools from the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Hamilton County area have attended the educational outreach programs featuring the gold, silver, and bronze winners representing Greece, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Tri-State school music groups and piano students joined the international artists in solo and ensemble performances.

said "No" to parties on leaving Laredo as my life has been one party after another, and I feared I would leave out someone. But Christ Church Episcopal honored me with a gift, a silver cross by James Avery, bestowed by Rev. Sheridan Walker. After church, a reception in the parish hall took place with Sheilah Glassford, Patricia Keck, and Elena Holloway spearheading the affair. Many people brought sandwiches and the Holloways brought a beautiful cake.
A urora Alexander had six for lunch with the piece de resistance being her famed Spanish paella.
Ruth Fierros invited ten members of her choir, the Blessed Sacrament Choir, over for supper, and I was presented with one of her famous poems on a plaque and an album for photos. Good food and good company with many of my ex-students.
A nd about Ruth, retired head of the Martin High School English Department, following me, she and her son Steven, my former student who now lives in Houston, came to visit with me in Helotes.

PAAVALI JUMPPANEN, pianist "Paavali Jumppanen's technique is big and his imaginative daring even bigger. His unusual recital prompted the observation that great artists take you places you haven't been to before. Jumppanen's performance of the Dutilleux Sonata was masterly in its handling of rhythm, color and texture, and in its headstrong, controlled abandon."
- THE BOSTON GLOBE
"Paavali Jumppanen, who gave a recital in the Young Concert Artists Series at the 92nd Street Y, offered a thoughtful, passionate and compelling journey. He performs with immense power and drive, and commands an extraordinary range of colors. The piano sings beautifully, but with a voice that is big and full of expressive possibilities."
- THE NEW YORK TIMES
"At the Kennedy Center, Jumppanen left no doubt that he has the dexterity of a Paganini and the strength of a Titan, from J.S. Bach, to five attention-getters by Liszt to brief tastes of music by his Finnish compatriots, to Dutilleux's Sonata. In Liszt's own daunting 'Mephisto Waltz,' never has the Devil made such a marvelous racket."

"Young Concert Artists is a trailblazing organization that has launched into professional orbit more than 100 important talents, including Murray Perahia, Emanuel Ax and the Tokyo String Quartet."
- THE NEW YORK TIMES Young Concert Artists Alumni
YCA Alumni have had a pervasive impact on virtually all facets of classical music with alumni all over the world active in composing, conducting, performing, teaching, and founding of music institutions and festivals. They have thriving solo and chamber music careers in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Young Concert Artists Alumni have founded more than twenty-five music festivals and chamber groups, including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe; the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival; TASHI; Speculum Musicae; Chamber Music Society of Boston; and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. They have served as the conductors and artistic directors of such music institutions and festivals as The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival; Mostly Mozart; Bravo! Colorado Music Festival in Vail; Dallas Symphony International Summer Music Festival; Bard College Chamber Music Festival; and Music from Angel Fire.
The alumni can currently be heard on more than a thousand recordings on such major labels as Sony, RCA, and Denon, and have won nine Grammy Awards. Young Concert Artists are also professors at twenty-four major institutions, including Harvard, Yale, M.I.T., Seoul University in Korea, New England Conservatory, The Juilliard School, the Detmold Conservatory, and the Hochschule fur Musik in Leipzig, Germany.

Summary Reviews
Sonata Collections
Pianist Ruth Laredo's Vladimir Ashkenazy's London label collection of complete sonatas is also inexpensive (in the Double-Decker format). (I bought the expensive older set that is made with a double jewel box.) The sound is less compressed than Laredo's, but has a a bit of harshness. The digitally recorded sonatas sound the best. The set lacks the excellent photos of the composer, as well as the beautiful design of the Laredo set. The liner notes in the Ashkenazy collection are the poorest of those I've reviewed. His playing is sometimes mechanical or choppy, but the 7th is the only lackluster performance in the set. The 10th is a bit disappointing, too. Many of his performances are excellent, such as the 1st, 3rd, and 8th. collection is another good choice, although it's pricey. The weakest performances in the set are his choppy and harsh rendering of the Fantasy in B minor and the soft 9th sonata. The 1st sonata is also played too fast, and without much emotion. His technique has a great deal of speed and detail. The collection is from the Hyperion label. The sound quality is very clean digital. The design is quite pleasing aesthetically. He is the only pianist to include an unpublished Scriabin sonata from his youth. The liner notes tell the reader that there are two other unpublished Scriabin sonatas from his youth. Hopefully someone will record those. Pianist Robert Taub's excellent complete collection of Scriabin's sonatas is available as a set on the Harmonia Mundi label. The performances are analog recordings from the eighties. This collection features the best sound quality of the collections in this review. However, on some sonatas, the left hand is too pronounced while the right is obscured. There is a distinct difference in the sound quality between sonatas because they were recorded at different times. As with the Laredo collection, the liner notes feature notes by the pianist. The set is pricey like Hamelin's. While many of Taub's performances excellent, the recording of the 7th sonata is a disappointment. The visual presentation is average like Ashkenazy's collection. Both collections feature the pianist smiling on the cover and lack the aesthetic attention present in the Laredo and Hamelin collections.

He won the Gold Medal in the Arthur Rubinstein and the Busoni Competitions, as well as receiving the award of an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1991. He toured under the Auspices of Young Concert Artists, performing with the Houston, Baltimore, Israel, Tonhalle, Montreal, and Pittsburgh Symphonies, the Royal Orchestra of Belgium, the Mozart Festival Orchestra of San Francisco, and many others. He has collaborated with such artists as Laurence Lesser, Yo-Yo Ma, Roman Totenberg, Denes Zsigmondy, Leslie Parnas, Bion Tsang and Tema Blackstone in concert. He has played recitals in major venues and made a widely praised CD of the Chopin Preludes on the BMG label. Mr. Chen's gifts as an extraordinary interpreter of Beethoven received high acclaim during a series of recitals in 1989 devoted to the performance of the thirty-two Beethoven sonatas. When the New York Times failed to cover Chen's Alice Tully Hall concert in New York, Ruth Laredo wrote a rave review in another publication welcoming a great new artist, exclaiming, "rarely have I heard such eloquence and musical understanding. Is anyone listening?"

  • Ruth Laredo Diesa Alsop Honored by Brits Slatkin accepts new gig Kennedy’s violins stolen

Ruth Laredo has died at age 67 from ovarian cancer. The pianist, known as the first post-WW II American-born female pianist to establish an important international performing and recording career, died Thursday in her apartment in New York City. She was renowned for her recordings of Scrabin and Rachmaninoff and was the first to record the complete works of Rachmaninoff. Her Discography includes more than 30 recordings, and she appeared in Woody Allen’s film, “Small Time Crooks”. American conductor Marin Alsop was honored last week at the classical Brit awards, winning female artist of the year, and John Adams won the contemporary music award for his piece “On the transmigration of Souls”… singer Bryn Terfel was named best male artist of the year. Leonard Slatkin has accepted a new gig. The conductor has been named the principal guest conductor of the Royal Philharmonic in London, beginning in November. His tenure at the National Symphony Orchestra comes to an end in 2008.
