Pianist Lang Lang Sets Classical Music World on Fire
Chinese pianist Lang Lang made time for table tennis even on Sunday, just one day ahead of his performance. The sport serves as a sort of warm-up for the young star. "I'm young and crazy. As I get older, I'll naturally regain my sanity,¡± says Chinese pianist Lang Lang at all of 22 years old. Perhaps you have to be crazy to play about 200 concerts a year with top conductors like Zubin Mehta, Christoph Eschenbach, Daniel Barenboim and Lorin Maazel. Now Lang is in Korea for a joint performance Eschenbach¡¯s Philadelphia Orchestra. But on Sunday, the day before his performance, Lang went to a table tennis club in Seoul's Seocho-dong after finishing his daytime rehearsal. For this pianist, ping-pong is both relaxation and pre-performance warm-up. Smashing the ball around for about 30 minutes, breaking a sweat in the process, Lang starts pouring his heart out. "Herbert von Karajan brought about a renaissance in classical music by making use of new technologies like video recordings. The 21st century could be called the multimedia era because of the Internet, animation, DVDs and games. Why is it that just because you're a classical musician, you have to be shut up inside your music?" he demands. "We may need a computer game that gives you a score as you play the piano so that children can be brought closer to classical music." In April, the pianist played hair dyed green and face made up in front of the puppets of popular kids show "Sesame Street," and last month he performed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." He's also a netizen who posts his "performance diaries" on his personal homepage (www.langlang.com) two or three times a month.

On Friday the science journal Nature published a series of papers on malaria and its control. Focusing on this preventable and curable disease is crucial and timely; malaria is the biggest killer of children in Africa accounting for over 1 million deaths world wide each year. Furthermore, we are now at the halfway point through the World Health Organization's (WHO) Roll Back Malaria program which can only be described as an unmitigated failure. Unless urgent and far reaching reforms are made to Roll Back Malaria and its partner organizations, malaria's death toll will continue unabated. One partner, UNICEF, the UN children's agency, is even sending a pianist instead of urgently needed nets and drugs The WHO, World Bank, the

Description:
Four years ago in Chicago, one of the world's great pianists, Andre Watts, was too sick to play. At show time, no less a musician than Isaac Stern walked onstage. But not to perform. Instead, Stern introduced a 17-year-old musician few in the audience had heard of before.
Lang Lang since has become the most heralded new classical pianist in years.
In this feature, Lang Lang (pronounced "lung lung") describes his approach to the piece he played that evening in Chicago Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. This offering is especially designed for classical stations, and can be used to introduce a music selection. Lang Lang is touring widely, and this piece also works well pegged to a local performances.
As in all the pieces in David Schulman's CPB-supported Musicians in their own words series, the story is told through a mix of the performer's voice and music. There is no reporter's voice heard, allowing the feature to be seamlessly incorporated into station news, talk, or music programming.

Email Andrew Piano Lessons Complex circumstances still surround the impending departure of Daniel Barenboim from his post as the ninth music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Some members of the CSO remain in a state of mourning and shock over the resignation of this protean genius, as do many orchestra subscribers and patrons. Others think that the temperamental and willful Barenboim cannot leave soon enough. Whichever side of the Barenboim divide one falls on, however, his 2005 Chicago schedule finds him presenting challenging and rich programs with the orchestra, and performing as well in chamber music programs and as a concerto soloist with principal guest conductor Pierre Boulez at the podium.

Chinese Piano Prodigy Makes Collaboration Debut with Philadelphia Orchestra
Piano Prodigy Makes Collaboration Debut with Philadelphia Orchestra Chinese piano prodigy Lang Lang, made his collaboration debut with one of the world's leading orchestras, the Philadelphia Orchestra, on its centennial celebration tour in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday evening.
The 18-year-old Chinese pianist was the soloist for Mendelssohn 's Piano Concerto No.1 under the direction of Munich-born master conductor Wolfgang Sawalisch.
Sawalisch said before the performance at a press conference, " Mendelssohn's work is very demanding for the soloist. But we're sure that this promising young man will be able to handle it well. " Lang Lang expressed excitement about performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra and said he would go all out for tonight's performance. The engrossed young pianist's passion and skill carried away the audience of some 10,000, who applauded ardently for an encore. Lang Lang played two extra performances including one adapted from a Chinese folk song and again received massive ovations.

Jan. 9, 2005
On a recent night in Hong Kong, Lang Lang captivated the sold-out house as he always does. All eyes were on center stage.
He's more than a mere virtuoso with elastic hands and dazzling dexterity. And he's more than just a supremely talented musician. Lang Lang is also a showman.
As Correspondent Bob Simon reports, Lang Lang is a spellbinding performer with a flair for drama ¨C- strutting, swooning, and wrapping the crowd around his 10 nimble fingers.
"I love the audience, because I love the tension there. Because it seems like a lot of people watching, I mean, the creation of this wonderful work," says Lang Lang. "And then you are at the same time the interpreter. It's like building a bridge to their heart."
If Lang Lang sounds a little dreamy, he often plays that way too, with his eyes closed, head back, cast in a musical trance.
