City after city, Lang Lang keeps playing
The concert pianist has an exhaustive schedule, but he would do more to bring classical music to the world.
By JOHN FLEMING, Times Performing Arts Critic published April 5, 2003 Lang Lang is on the jet set circuit. Seattle; Santa Barbara, Calif.; Anchorage, Alaska; Tampa; Washington; New York and that's just the pianist's recital itinerary for the first two weeks of April. Then he flies off to Asia, Europe and points beyond, concertizing all the way, some 150 performances this year. "Almost every day another city. It's crazy," he said in a phone interview. At 20, Lang Lang he always uses both names has come a long way fast. Born in China, he was still a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia when he started playing with major orchestras a few years ago. Now he is one of the rising stars in classical music. On Wednesday, he gives a recital at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, presented by the Florida Orchestra, with whom he has played concertos the past three season.

Programme
Mozart: Piano Sonata in C Major, KV330
Chopin: Piano Sonata No 3 in B minor, Op. 58
Schumann: Kinderszenen, Op.15
Rachmaninov: Prelude Op.23 No. 2 in Bb Major
Rachmaninov: Prelude Op. 23 No. 5 in G minor
Liszt: Sonnet de Petrarque No. 104
Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 (trans. Horowitz)
We are delighted to welcome him back to the Hall, following his stunning début here in 2003. Acclaimed in the major concert halls of North America, Europe and Asia, Lang Lang has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level and has established himself as one of the most exciting pianists of our time. Lang Lang's talent and personality make him an ideal ambassador for classical music and a role model for young people. He has performed live on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and on “Sesame Street”. He is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Berlin Philharmonic and all "Big Five" American orchestras. In 2004 he took up his duties as UN Goodwill Ambassador with a visit to Tanzania, further expanded his devoted fan base with a triumphant concert tour of Australia and New Zealand, and topped the classical charts with his Carnegie Hall recital recording. The Irish Times "It's not just his ability to gallop around the keyboard. While he is doing that, and regardless of speed and complexity, he can balance the quietest and the loudest textures to a degree matched by a handful of pianists . . . His feel for timing, phrase and rhythm is impeccable.”

Pianist Lang Lang Rachs at the NSO
By Eliot Grasso Published: Wednesday, October 15, 2003 This evening's concert began with several uninspired selections: Three Slavonic Dances by Dvorák from Book I, Op. 46.
It's difficult to imagine a more overly used set of opening pieces, except for maybe a few of the Hungarian Dances by Brahms. Yes, they're lively and employ the full resources of the orchestra, and yes, they're brilliant orchestral works, but it would be nice for once in the beginning minutes of a concert not to feel like the orchestra is trying their hardest to get the audience stimulated.
The performance of the Slavonic Dances was fairly precise despite the flatulent contribution made by the brass section to the C minor Allegro assai
Following the sprightly Dvorák was the Concerto for Orchestra in five movements by Jennifer Higdon. The entire piece was rhythmically vivacious with short, catchy, minimalistic, tonal melodies; the form of the opus arch-like shape.

Glenn Gould, Lang Lang,
and les barricades mystèrieuses
by Angus Verspeeten
The Canadian pianist Glenn Gould burst onto the aural scene in 1955 with his ear-opening recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations. Now jocular, now limpid, by turns pensive and danceable , Gould's performance was a young man's discovery and celebration of life in one of the monuments of human art. As often happens with such monuments, so much serious scholarship and reverential playing had accreted to the Goldberg Variations that, until Gould, people had forgotten that it was a work of profound, though not unalloyed, joy. Thirty years later, shortly before his death, Gould recorded the variations again. If the 1955 version was a spring day in the Bavarian Alps, the 1985 version was a winter night beside the frozen Baltic Sea. Same music, same pianist, same world. But. But. In that "but" lies mystery, much the same mystery that we encounter in quantum physics, observing the electron just before and just after a quantum leap. What happens in that interim? Where does it happen? How? Why? Since Gould showed the listening world that there was a great deal more to Bach than stereotypical teutonic stoicism, other pianists, generally possessed of more bravado and a lot less talent, have had a go at the piece with decidedly mixed results.

Chinese pianist Lang Lang is one of the new generation of superstar pianists. He has already won many competitions and performed with many of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. This CD was recorded when he was just 20 years old. The coupling of the turbulent and passionate Tchaikovsky concerto with Mendelssohn's more delicate work was Lang Lang's idea - he feels a huge affintiy for both pieces and feels they show 'both sides of what an artist can do'.

By T.L. Ponick
SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES
"There are maybe 9, 10 million young pianists in China now," says international piano phenom Lang Lang. There, young classical artists like himself are treated like rock stars.
"It is different from the U.S.," he explains. "Everyone goes to [classical] concerts and CD signings. They have to have police to hold back the crowds, and to have this life is the dream of many young Chinese people."
Mr. Lang may not need a police escort to make his way through the District this weekend and he can forget about a free case of Remy Martin in his Kennedy Center dressing room but he certainly arrived in town with a full schedule.
In addition to preparing for his solo recital today in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall under the auspices of the Washington Performing Arts Society (WPAS), the energetic 22-year-old also dropped by the Levine School of Music, where he led a master class for promising young local pianists.
"I love to teach kids," he says. "I think it's important to reach the very young."

Once in a blue moon, history is made when a brilliant artist reveals himself to the world. At only 22 years old, pianist Lang Lang is the type of musical gem that you encounter only in rare junctures in time. Since his breakthrough in 1999, when he substituted for an indisposed AndrŽ Watts in performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he has become a legend in his own time. Today, Lang Lang has an aura that's typically reserved for the old masters. He will make his eagerly awaited Hawaii debut this weekend in a spectacular performance of Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto with Maestro Samuel Wong and the Honolulu Symphony.

Was Wunder!
