    Eduardo Mata, conductor.
The influences of Richard Wagner and César Franck are evident in Ernest Chausson’s music, although he developed an intensely individual style full of instrumental color and lingering melodies.
His Symphony in B-flat is one of the few completely successful French works in that genre.
Jacques Ibert’s music, as exemplified in Escales and Divertissement, is full of humor and vibrancy and exhibits elements of both Impressionism and Classicism. Divertissement is particularly witty and satiric, with its quick parodies of Mendelssohn’s "Wedding March," Viennese waltzes, and French salon ditties. "What an instrument Mata has in the Dallas Symphony. Virtuosic brilliance abounds in every section."—

    Welcome from the Artistic Director
Dear Friends, Join us for the exciting 2005 Season of the Niagara International Chamber Music Festival this summer at historic Niagara-on-the-Lake. The opening night gala is sure to be a thrilling evening as 12-year-old Bora Kim amazes us by playing a Haydn violin concerto and a Mozart Rondo for piano on the same concert. Other not-to-be-missed events include performances by three giants of the keyboard in a brand new series: Great Canadian Pianists. Hear Anton Kuerti in a remarkable traversal of the Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Schubert works. Festival favourite Robert Silverman drops by to play an evening of Variations, as does the great Czech-Canadian pianist Antonin Kubalek, fresh from an appearance at the world-famous Prague Spring Festival, to share a program of Czech and more familiar masterpieces. In addition we will have a stellar line-up of world-class chamber musicians and soloists playing in venues throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake, including some new haunts like the Buttery Theatre and Restaurant, which will play host to several Jazz concerts this summer. With 35 concerts, talks, and multi-media collaborations this year’s festival is sure to be the most exciting yet!

My mission begins at Remenyi House of Music on Bloor Street. There, amidst the shiny Steinways, I find Mark, a piano technician hard at work. He tells me that business is good: these days, a successful piano technician in this city might have as many as 300 clients. And to account for the large number of pianos in Toronto, he offers historical reasons.
