Pianist Antonin Kubalek: "Something happened there!"
[22-03-2005] By Jan Velinger Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Jan's guest in One on One is renowned Czech-Canadian pianist Antonin Kubalek, whose recordings and performances have captured audiences worldwide. In the 90s, Mr Kubalek returned for a series of triumphant performances in the Czech Republic, and continues to perform here regularly today. His recitals are most recommended, containing an incredible intensity; his repertoire includes Dvorak, Schubert, Smetana, and Brahms. But, how did Antonin Kubalek get involved in music? That was the first question I asked him when we met recently in downtown Toronto.

Prague Music Festival opened by Czech-Canadian pianist
[22-07-2005] By Martin Mikule Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Antonin Kubalek, photo: www.antoninkubalek.com While for most of the year Prague concert halls offer dozens of concerts every week, in the summer months, when people leave for their holidays most concerts are aimed at foreign tourists - almost every day you can hear several rather ropy renderings of Vivaldi's Four Seasons or Mozart's Requiem in churches around the city. But since last year Prague has seen a new event that aims to improve the situation. The Prague Music Festival is a series of concerts initiated with the aim of bringing good performances to Prague concert platforms even during the summer months, says festival organizer Ilja Smid.

~ Critical Acclaim ~ Antonin Kubalek has become a best-selling international recording artist. His awarded and Juno nominated CD recordings on the prestigious Dorian label have won him extraordinary praise in such publications as the American Record Guide, Fanfare Magazine, CD Review, and Gramophone Magazine: ...his readings of Schumann and Brahms provide a rare mix of improvisatory freedom and structural control: with such rare playing, one's grasp of the musical architecture is enhanced precisely because of the rare spontaneity through which it is realized... (Glenn Gould)ed... (Glenn Gould) ...some of the most enjoyable moments in recent piano-recital memory... ...his wonderful Chopin interpretation of the F Minor Ballade alone was worth the price of admission... ...here was the essence of subtlety and refinement with those rare glimpses into the inner message of the music... (Toronto Star) ...this music sounded like it had been wrought from pure gold... ...the concert also proved once again the incalculable benefits this country received when the Russian tanks invaded Czechoslovakia. We have in Kubalek one of the finest interpreters of this century right in our midst... Grieg, The Three Violin Sonatas

biography
Pianist Antonin Kubalek’s artistic triumph from his Rudolfinum recital at the 2002 International Prague Spring Festival set a benchmark acclaim both critically and popularly. The Czech magazine Hudebni Rozhledy (Musical Observer) said of his performance that "with attentive listening, one comes to realize that he possesses a consistently refined touch, so that any polyphonic writing sounds wonderfully vivid." That same year, Antonin was the recipient of the UNESCO award for life-long commitment to both the international promotion and performance of Czech repertoire and his contribution to the definition of musical beauty.
Upcoming highlights for this season include solo recitals in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and a CBC performance celebrating the “Year of Czech Music. Following this CBC performance, Antonin will return to the Czech Republic in May, 2004 and perform a tour in such cities as Prague, Brno, Zlin, Jesenik. For This tour, he will perform a special program of works by Suk, Dvorak, Smetana, Novak and Martinu, all Czech composers with anniversaries in 2004.
Since arriving in Canada in 1968, Mr. Kubalek quickly re-established his career performing in solo concerts, with major orchestras, and in radio and television broadcasts with CBC. Glenn Gould made a unique contribution to this Canadian artist's career. Gould's only foray into the role of "producer" was spirited by Kubalek's playing. The Second Piano Sonata by Korngold, recently re-released on CD by Citadel Records, was the fruit of this singular musical union.
