Home July 1997 Catalogue August 1997 Catalogue September 1997 Catalogue ... June 1999 Catalogue Leo Sowerby symphony No. 2 orchestral works JOLY BRAGA SANTOS - A new symphony cycle on Marco Polo MORTON GOULD (1913-1996): Quickstep from Symphony on Marching Tunes, Cotillion from Fall River Legend, Philharmonic Waltzes, Latin American Symphonette, Festive Music, Fanfare for Freedom, Windjammer (Main Title), ALBERTO GINASTERA (1916-1983): Estancia - Suite. This is probably the most spectacular digital recording we've ever heard, both for imaging, clarity and dynamic range. It's astonishing that it was made in 1978, using the "Soundstream" system which lost out to other, large-corporately-financed systems. The repertoire is (strangely) still under-represented in the catalogue but, in recordings like these, it wouldn't matter if there were dozens of versions available! London Symphony Orchestra; Morton Gould. Citadel CTD 88130 (U.S.A.) GORDON JACOB (1895-1984): Mini Concerto for Clarinet and Strings, Concertino for Clarinet and Strings (after Tartini), Clarinet Quintet, Clarinet Trio. Resolutely tonal and Romantic in style, these pieces, even the apparently ludicrously brief Mini Concerto, display a depth of feeling that is all too often lacking in 20th-century music. There is more than a hint of English pastoral throughout, but the music never sounds like the more familiar composers associated with that phrase, except fleetingly and superficially, and there is much beauty to savor here. Warmly recommended. Charles Russo (clarinet), Premier Chamber Orchestra; David Gilbert. Premier PRCD 1052 (U.S.A.)

Features The groove shop: The Googe stands out among new talent
Friday, August 5, 2005 8:55 AM CDT By ANTHONY DAVIS
Texarkana Gazette
The Grooveshop is always on the lookout for new talent on the independent horizon locally, regionally and nationally, and this week we spotted the Houston, Texas, band The Googe.
The demo's songs include "Dear God," "Leave It" and "After All." Each carefully-crafted cut offers the listener a chance to appreciate the "rockestral" style of The Googe, one similar to what this column has termed art rock in the past. Cascading violins, violas and piano provide a sometimes haunting, sometimes exhilarating background for the progressive rock layers and inspired vocals by Denise and Matt Kovach, lead guitarist. Bobby Rundberg is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who plays drums, guitar, coronet and trumpet. Brian Baldwin, a classically trained violinist and pianist, devotes his considerable skills on bass.
The Grooveshop spoke to Denise earlier this week for more clues about how The Googe arrived at its sound and what plans the group has for the future.
"I can remember when MTV first came to television, and my dream was to become a musician and appear on MTV," she said. "I began trying to play guitar when I was about 8 years-old, and as I got a little older I became very interested in lyrics and songwriting. I loved writing, but I'm not the greatest guitar player in the world. I have been working on my singing, trying to improve and I've been told I have improved."

AS CONCERTO SOLOIST Beethoven - Concerto no. 1, op. 15, with the Okanagan Symphony conducted by Douglas Sandford. "This fine young pianist has an efficient technique and is very musical. The slow movement was beautiful, and the final movement was zestful and brilliant." Dale Reubart, The Kelowna Daily Courier, B.C. Tchaikovsky - Concerto no. 1, op. 23, with the Fox Valley Symphony conducted by Brian Groner. "It was played wonderfully by pianist Michael Kim, a member of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music faculty. Kim's playing is inspired, passionate, and controlled." Carrie T. Gruman-Trinkner, The Post-Crescent, WI Rachmaninoff - Concerto no. 2, op. 18, and Concerto no. 3, op. 30, with the Regina Symphony conducted by Victor Sawa. "The adjectives to describe Kim's soaring performance of this piece come not from musicology but from volcanology: explosive, eruptive, fiery, steaming, awesome." David Green, The Regina Leader-Post, SK.
