Stephen Kovacevich's Performance Schedule
Stephen Kovacevich, born 1940, might be the most under-rated pianist of his generation, which includes Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, and Richard Goode. He is among the most interesting living players of Beethoven, and is also tremendous in Brahms, Bartok, and Schubert. He has lived in England his whole adult life and doesn't play in the US that often, but if you keep your eyes open, you might be able to catch him here. I put together the following information through judicious use of Google and will try to keep it up to date. Please note that I am not affiliated with Mr. Kovacevich or his managers, and they have no responsibility whatsoever for the information appearing on this Web page. Mr. Kovacevich is managed by Van Walsum Management , London. Van Walsum has a news page where information can be found about concerts by artists they manage.

Mr. Kovacevich's set of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas was published in the UK in October, 2003 and in the U.S. in January, 2004.

http://www.robertscamardella.com/
Born in Great Britain in 1983, Robert Scamardella began to improvise and play the piano at the age of four. At twelve, he was awarded a scholarship to study with concert pianist Lucy Parham for five years at the Guildhall School of Music. Whilst there he was a prize winner in all the major competitions, including the Lutine Prize and the Keyboard Instrument Prizes for both 2000 and 2001. He also received further scholarships and awards from the Musicians' Benevolent Fund, The Ann Driver Trust and The Musicas Fund amongst others.
As a result, he was invited to make his concerto debuts aged sixteen with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra playing Shostakovich, Mozart and Grieg. His studies also included working with pianists Stephen Kovacevich, Artur Pizarro, Bryce Morrison and Gordon Fergus-Thompson.
His concert recital debuts were made across the South of England in 2000 and 2001 to much critical acclaim. Subsequently, he was awarded a scholarship to further his studies at the Guildhall with Joan Havill.
He came to national attention on becoming a finalist in the 2002 BBC Young Musician of the Year. Other prizes since being at the Guildhall have included the Romantic Piano Award; open to pianists of all ages, and more recently, he was the winner of the Professional Recital Prize of the Oxford Music Festival.

Beethoven: 32 Piano Sonatas

OrpheumMasters (Ten CDs)

I thought of kicking myself after hearing the first couple of CDs from Robert Silverman's new ten-volume set of the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas. So involving is the music making, I wished I had attended his live performances in Toronto last year. In fact, the Canadian pianist has given recitals of the complete sonatas in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and Seattle, and did so before committing the music to disc. From the reviews quoted in his press package, the qualities of the concerts reflect much of the magnificent music making found on the new CDs. Tackling the most important series of works in the piano literature must be an awesome task, however, one undertaken only by musicians with total control over their technique and musical ideas. While no set, including my personal favourite, Artur Schnabel (EMI), is a perfect statement of a pianist's art, a commitment to musical truth and beauty must unify the overall picture if the set is to be competitive. Schnabel, Yves Nat (EMI) and Richard Goode (Nonesuch) in their complete sets achieve this. Happily, Silverman has a clear vision, too, and with the musicianship to see it through. Silverman plays phrases with clean lines, accompanied by a balanced and very detailed left hand (his

EMI CDC 7 54578-2 (CD only). John Fraser, prod.; Mark Vigars, eng. DDD. TT: 59:28 Until this recording came along, it seemed that no performance would ever match up to my old favorites: Curzon/Szell for poetry and Serkin/Szell for a dynamic approach. Kovacevich, one of the rare musicians who makes too few records, has Brahms's full measure in this powerful early work. He sees it more as a profound search than as a vehicle for pianistic virtuosity. The big sections have plenty of fire and strength, but never at the expense of more reflective moments. The slow movement, hushed and deeply expressive, has never sounded better. The "Viola" songs, expertly sung by Ann Murray, are nice filler. (XVI-7) SCHUBERT: Impromptus, D.899, 935
Andreas Haefliger, piano
Sony SK 53108 (CD only). Wolf Erichson, prod.; Markus Heiland, eng. DD. TT: 62:24 It's wonderful how these eight modest pieces can sum up so much of what's good in life and still make me aware of my inner longings. Young Andreas Haefliger understands Schubert on this level, and communicates it with unfailing sensitivity. Simply put, he knows how to shape a phrase and emphasize a chord or modulation without impeding the directness and flow of Schubert's language. The piano sound is equal to the best I've heard on CD.
