Vogler's softened Shostakovich
The music of Dmitri Shostakovich be so stingingly acrid that the composer seems to stand outside it, sardonically commenting on its evolution. Whether this resulted from the forced imposition of "socialist realism" by Soviet authorities, or from more personal gravitations, remains a mystery. But his 1934 Sonata for Cello and Piano is one of the great beauties of the slender cello-piano literature, and it was played with introspective passion by cellist Jan Vogler and pianist Andreas Klein Tuesday evening at Kennedy Centers Terrace Theater.
Vogler's big, commanding tone held the sonata within an almost neoromantic framework; he softened many the acute angles of Shostakovich's phrases without lessening the energy or melodic flow. Klein partnered admirably, and both had the virtuosity to cover the awkward technical difficulties the composer laid into the score. But Shostakovich has seldom, sounded so - the words do not come easily - rapturously heartfelt.
Beethoven s Op. 69 Sonata was far more than adequately realized. The performance had weight without heaviness, disjunct leaps were starkly acctirate, some of Beethoven's brusque humor hit home, and phrasing was elegantly natural. This was a romantic conception, though, and the steel in this piece was suggested rather than played out. The Boccherini Sonata No. 6, which opened the concert, is a concoction of pastel variations that go nowhere much too slowly.

THIS WEEK AT THE CLUBS: COCO MONTOYA
Supporting his new CD Can't Look Back , Coco's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have pushed him upwards into the higher reaches of the blues-rock world. They say his tunes are groove-laden, his vocals unaffected and his force unbridled. Should be a jammin' treat to catch some song off that new album at the Duck. Friday, Wild Duck BF
NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALL-STARS
N.M.A. frontman said "When young white kids play black music, whether it's Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones or the Beastie Boys, it turns into rock 'n' roll." Well that's what drips, shimmers and explodes, they say, from their new album 51 Phantom , "a taut selection of mostly original compositions." Hearing their stuff, you might find yourself thinking of the Allman Brothers, the Dead, Hendrix, Phish and Cream. Tuesday, WOW Hall
