I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman. The next hour will be devoted completely to a single compact discovery: an RCA Red Seal BMG Classics recording called "Vocalise." I call this program "Vocalise Variations." MUSIC: fades out The Vocalise in question is by Sergei Rachmaninov. It contains what in my opinion is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. And lots of people evidently agree with me, including musicians, as this hour will prove. You see the original piece by Rachmaninov was written for soprano and piano. After all, a "vocalise" is a melody sung without words but to one or more vowel sounds. Cellists, flutists, violinists, choirs and orchestras all loved this melody so much that they arranged this music for their instruments. This CD consists entirely of these various arrangements of Rachmaninov's famous piece.

At Carnegie Hall recently, three of them appeared within two weeks: Mitsuko Uchida, a Japanese pianist, long resident in Europe, who is known particularly for her Mozart; Emanuel Ax, an American, born in Poland, who is admired for his Chopin and chamber playing; and Evgeny Kissin, a former child prodigy, now twenty-nine, from Russia, who is the object of rapture and delirium everywhere. Mitsuko Uchida, decidedly, is not of this tradition; she is a clean, careful, and modest pianist. Uchida offered an unusual program in New York, or rather, she presented it in an unusual order: a Chopin sonata, Webern, Mozart, and, to conclude, a late Schubert sonata. Her Chopin was the B Uchida, however, has a severely limited technique, meaning that she can barely handle much of the mainstream repertory. The Chopin sonata was all but beyond her. She is exceptionally tight in the arms, which restricts her movement and deprives her of fluidity. She appears to sit too close to the keyboard, and her shoulders are hunched. Her entire piano-playing apparatus seems cramped. To be sure, she usually manages to get through difficult passages, but not without awkwardness and strain. H er main problem in the first movement of the Chopin lay in the octaves: she could not coax a singing line out of them. It is easier, of course, to produce such a line with single notes, but Chopin demands that it be done with octaves as well. Uchida did not play those octaves

Monday, August 23, 2004 UCLA World-Renowned Russian Pianist Evgeny Kissin Makes His Royce Hall Recital Debut Oct. 1 Date: August 15, 2000 Contact: Renee Johnson ( reneej@ucla.edu ) Phone: 310-825-5202 UCLA Performing Arts presents one of the most distinguished pianists of his generation, Evgeny Kissin, in his recital debut at UCLA' s Royce Hall, at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 1. This event features a CenterStage discussion at 6 p.m. with Milton Stern, professor emeritus, California State University, Los Angeles. Kissin's program features Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 31, No. 2 in D minor; Schumann's "Carnaval," Op. 9; and Brahms' Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor. This year marks Kissin's 10th anniversary tour of North America. He will perform in eight U.S. cities, with two performances in Southern California, including UCLA and a concert at the Orange County Philharmonic Society in Costa Mesa on Thursday, Sept. 28. Renowned for the totality and singularity of his talent, Kissin has been lauded by the New York Times as a rare talent who comes along no more "than once in a generation, if that." His technique and interpretive powers have been called "transcendental." Born in Moscow in October 1971, Kissin began to play and improvise on the piano at age two. At the age of six, he entered the Moscow Gnessin School of Music for Gifted Children, where he was a student of Anna Pavlovna Kantor. He gave his first solo recital in Moscow at age 11 and came to international attention in March 1984 when, at age 12, he performed the two Chopin concertos in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory with the Moscow State Philharmonic, under the direction of Dmitri Kitaenko. He has since performed throughout the former Soviet Union with the Leningrad Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Soviet TV and Radio, and the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR. In 1997 he returned for the first time since 1991 to receive the highest cultural honor in the Russian Republic, the Triumph Prize, and to perform two solo recitals in Moscow.

New generation of classical pianists steps into the spotlight By George Bulanda IT'S BECOME almost fashionable to join the chorus of Jeremiahs who lament the passing of the old guard of pianists and wail about today's lackluster performers. The charge is not without some merit. Conservatories tend to churn out perfect pianists who are imperfect musicians. Few are willing to take risks or put the imprint of personality on their playing. But to hear the whining of reactionaries, no living pianist is worthy of turning the pages of a Vladimir Horowitz or Arthur Rubinstein. This broad-brush dismissal of today's pianists just doesn't wash. Consider Martha Argerich, whose playing is ferocious, impulsive, and technically astounding. Argerich inspires fireworks the moment she walks onstage. She often cancels concerts, but temperament is tolerable from an artist this good. Less fiery but equally artistic is Alfred Brendel. His traversal of the complete Beethoven sonatas is exemplary and his Schubert shines. He also plays Schoenberg's thorny piano concerto with the same depth he brings to the old masters.
