In his 1999 film, Evgeny Kissin, The Gift of Music, veteran musical documentarian Christopher Nupen gives us an intimate portrait of this supremely talented young man. The film covers Kissin’s early years, the appearance of his musical gifts at a very tender age, and the extraordinary relationship between Kissin and his teacher Anna Pavlovna Kantor, the only person with whom he has ever studied. This is typical Nupen, and it is rather sad to see that he has done little to change his style in the last few decades. The narrator spills on in a monotone with an over-flattering run- on about the pianist’s unusual giftedness. He then sits off camera to interview Kissin himself, whose English is quite fine, but his hesitating and monochromatic delivery makes for some pretty tedious air time. I continually got the impression that I was sitting Indian-style on the hard floor of an elementary classroom staring up at the movie screen, in the manner common for educational film viewing in my youth.

Schubert was born in Liechtenthal, a suburb of Vienna, on January 31, 1797, and died in Vienna on November 19, 1828. He composed the Fantasy at the beginning of 1828, and it was published four months after his death by Diabelli. Schubert dedicated the work to Karoline, Countess Esterh¡zy of Galantha, who had been an occasional student of his earlier in the 1820s. Schubert and his friend Franz Lachner played it to great acclaim in March 1828. Lebensst¼rme— the title is Diabelli’s, not Schubert’s—also comes from the last year of Schubert’s life, composed that May. It was published in 1840. Nothing is known about its early performance history.

Pianist Evgeny Kissin in Recital Davies Hall - San Francisco
Pianist Evgeny Kissin

David Beech
Pianist Evgeny Kissin delighted the audience at Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, on Wednesday, October 29 th , 2003, with a slightly unusual program for him in that it did not include any Russian music. Incidentally, a large part of the audience seemed to speak Russian, and the person sitting next to me had previously heard the twelve-year old Kissin play in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, at a cost of 3 Rubles (approximately 1 dollar). The structure of the program was clear the first half was devoted to Schubert, and the second half passed via Liszt’s transcriptions of four of Schubert’s best-known songs to two pieces purely by Liszt. Schubert’s last piano sonata, D.960 in B-flat, is a work that is difficult to bring off in recital. For a start, it is very lengthy (it occupied the whole first half of the program), and it is not easily balanced

[71'10"] full-price by Johann D'Souza This concert has been dubbed as a legendary concert. But why legendary ? Well it does not seem so obvious until one finds that it is performed by a 12 year-old boy. What prompted me to buy this disc was the fact that I was talking to a friend who had said that he had seen Kissin in London a while back and in his words he said that Kissin is "unbelievably exciting, breathtaking, truly a genius." The CD's front sleeve displays a boy totally in control of what he is doing. His eyes peering in the distance, his hands stretched out decked on the keyboard giving you that feeling of a person waiting to show the world what he is made of - and he does not take long to prove it to you! From the first long tutti to the introduction of the E minor concerto you're straight away thrust into a sense of total bewilderment. I remember a couple of years ago when the SSO had invited 3 Russian children to perform under the baton of Choo Hoey. Barely 14, they played Lalo's Symphonie Espagnol , Wienawski's Second Violin Concerto and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2. I was stunned by their skill but I came out of the concert hall a bit dismayed. I was disappointed because there was a cold feeling in their playing, like a bunch of robots fresh off the conveyor belt. Technically they were so perfect it was mind boggling. From their pizzicati to their double stops, everything was perfect. The pianist too was a technical wizard from the moment she greeted her eager audience (with a quick bow and off to the piano she went). However from the initial seven or nine chords you just felt that it was a machine playing.

GREAT PIANISTS
Evgeny Kissin discusses late Schubert, Liszt, life on the road in America, and the role of critics, in conversation with Stephen Wigler
Kissin now says he was reticent about the Liszt because the recording industry was going through hard times. But in 1998 I remember him saying that he was playing the Liszt Sonata as well as he possibly could, but that it would take years before he thought he could play it well enough to permit it to be measured against the standards set by the recorded versions of Horowitz, Gilels and Richter. He now understands that the best he can do today is very good indeed. ‘I wish I had recorded it then,’ he says. ‘I put the Liszt Sonata aside in 1998, and to prepare it again would take very long. I’d still love to record it, of course, but I don’t see how or when I will be able to do it.’
Kissin arrived in the US early in March, after having performed the programme several times in Europe and England. The first concert of his six-city American tour was still about a month away, but he was going to be busy until that time. He was scheduled to give several performances of Prokofiev’s Second Concerto with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Mstislav Rostropovitch conducting, as part of the Orchestra’s three-week celebration of the great cellist-conductor’s 76th birthday. And many of his evenings were spent, with Jay David Saks, editing the all-Brahms disc which he had recorded the previous year.

Dr. Mach Interviews Evgeny Kissin
Dr. Mach 's interview with legendary Russian pianist, Evgeny Kissin, appeared as the cover story, "A Warm Reunion with Evgeny Kissin," in the September, 2004 issue of Clavier Magazine. At 32, Kissin has for years been called a "musical genius" and hailed as "one of the greats of the greatest pianists" by numerous music critics throughout the world. His great talent for the piano was first discovered when he was only eighteen months old. After hearing his sister play a particular Bach Fugue on the piano, Kissin sang the entire Bach theme melody back. The start of his great musical career began that day and the rest has been a glorious journey of music making so far.
