Since his debut in 1959, Igor Kipnis has become one of the world's best-known harpsichordists, with more than fifty solo recordings in his discography. He has also performed and recorded on the antique fortepiano. Readers of the many magazines for which he has written will also know of his long-standing interest in romantic piano literature and its great performers. In 1995, Kipnis heard Karen Kushner's acclaimed recordings of the Chopin Mazurkas, released by Connoisseur Society. Shortly afterward the two met and expressed their admiration for each others' playing. They made their debut as a performing Duo later that year, and have since performed in in more than a dozen states and in Europe and South America. The recordings on the debut CD, entitled "Four Hands," derive from these performances. The rare performance ofBrahms's

When I was a student at Yale University's School of Music in the 1950s, I once attended a faculty party where harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick reminisced about his errant youth as a pianist before he fell in love with the harpsichord and its literature - it was a time during which he said that he had a great admiration for the flashy virtuoso music of Liszt. We dared him to play something by Liszt, and he finally obliged by going to the piano and playing the Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody. At first he had us in stitches with his parody of the exaggerated excesses of the virtuoso pianist, but by the slow middle section the playing had become totally serious, and the repeated octave windup of the finale was a knockout.
Thus I was not surprised to learn a few years ago that Igor Kipnis, after over forty years as one of the preeminent harpsichordists of our time, had finally come out of the closet and revealed his inner soul as one totally dedicated to and extremely knowledgeable about the great body of piano literature of the nineteenth century, and more importantly, the great legacy of recorded performances of all the distinguished pianists of recent history.

In today's pianistic pantheon, the name of Argentinian-born Martha Argerich ought to be considered virtually synonymous with prodigious virtuosity, imagination, and unbridled spontaneity. That she is an instinctive player, rather than a wholly intellectual one, possibly accounts for her playing being so stimulating. For myself, I would want to own almost any recording of hers that becomes available. In so many ways, she stands in the musical world as a phenomenon who makes her own rules, an iconoclast who plays how, when and with whom she wants. In a discography not especially voluminous, one recalls in particular her amazing solo and concerted Ravel, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky. Argerich previously recorded the Prokofiev Third Concerto in 1967 with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic Originally coupled with Ravel's G major Concerto, that performance, long considered one of the high points in her discography, is still available [ DG 447 438-2 , re-packaged 1995 coupled with Gaspard de la nuit ]. Prokofiev No 1 and Bartok No 3 are first commercial ventures for her in this repertory, and, interestingly, the source is neither DG nor Decca/London but rather EMI.

Dan Wilson begin quoted message I just completed last night Igor Kipnis' historic-pianism course at the Mannes College of Music in New York City. It begins again at Mannes next week, and at Univ. of Connecticut in Stamford in March. I highly recommend it to those within hailing distance who are not already expert in the area. Igor Kipnis on the music Sonata in B-Minor (Searle.178): Franz Liszt is credited with having written only one full-fledged sonata for piano, if one doesn't include the (from his ), which is more dependent on its literary base. At least that's all that has come down to us from the composer's time. A C-Minor sonata had been mentioned by Liszt, and there evidently also was a sonata for four hands at one keyboard. Additionally, the composer as late as 1881 was able to recall the first 16 bars of a two-hand sonata in F-Minor from memory, this five years before his death. All these works date from around 1825, a further sonata in C-Minor from around 1836 also being credited to him. All these early works are lost. The genesis of his massive B-Minor Sonata, one of the most remarkable pieces in the 19th-century repertoire, is very much tied up in his personal affairs, just as it had been with the stimulus of his previous Swiss and Italian journeys. His liaison with Marie d'Agoult by 1845 had progressively disintegrated, although he continued to maintain contact. As part of an extended tour that included Romania, Hungary, and the Ukraine, Liszt had planned that his public farewell piano recital should take place in Elisabetgrad, Ukraine, in September 1847. He had decided that as court

Profound melancholy continues with Liszt's quote from Letter 53: "What do I want? what am I? what to ask of Nature?...For cause cannot be seen, and conclusions but mislead; all forms change and are reshaped, and the illusion of permanence soon exhausts itself...I feel, I exist only to be diminished by indomitable desires, to imbibe the allure of a fanciful World, and to be awestruck at her seductive imperfections (footnote 3)." The is a prime example of one of Liszt's favorite compositional techniques, that of thematic metamorphosis; this entire piece is based on a single theme that effectively is altered throughout the work's four continuous sections, a device that may also be noted in the B-Minor Sonata as well as in such equally popular examples as and the second Piano Concerto. In 1854, Liszt revised the Album d'un Voyageur as , omitting a few of the original pieces and providing some new ones. One of those added for the new publication (1855) was the virtuosic Orage , which had been composed sometime after 1848 and which depicts a raging mountain storm. Again a quotation heads the score, this time from Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage : "But where of ye, oh tempests, is the goal? / Are you like those within the human breast? / Or do ye find, at length, like eagles, some high nest?"
