    Presidential Scholar in the Arts Zachary Bernstein, seventeen, is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. He began studying piano when he was five and began composing seriously at age ten.
    Zachary is studying composition with Michael Albaugh and piano with Thomas Lymenstull. His past composition teachers include Gregory Youtz, Samuel Jones, John Boyle, and Cynthia Vanmaanen.
    In the summer of 2004, Zachary attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival, studying composition with Samuel Adler. He has won national awards for his compositions, including awards in the MTNA Composition Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Composition Competition, Natalie and Murray S. Katz Young Composers Competition, Young Inventors and Creators Competition, ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, and National PTA Reflections Competition.
