Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Daniel Barenboim just completed a cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas at Carnegie Hall. That is, he played all 32 sonatas, over eight recitals. In so doing, he became only the fourth pianist to perform this cycle in that historic hall. The first was Artur Schnabel, in 1936. Then came Alfred Brendel, almost 50 years later. Then Maurizio Pollini. And now, Barenboim. The Beethoven sonatas may be considered the summit of the piano literature. They are almost written on tablets. Of course, another summit is Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier (if we can speak for the keyboard in general, rather than the piano in particular). It's pleasant to reflect that Beethoven imbibed The Well-Tempered Clavier both books while learning in Bonn. Bach soaked into his brain, serving him well, forever.

John O'Conor
Artist in Residence
August 4-6
Our Guest Artist in Residence for the 2005 season will be John O'Conor. Through his recitals, concerto appearances, and critically acclaimed recordings, the Irish pianist John O'Conor has earned a reputation as a masterful interpreter of the Classic and Early Romantic piano repertoires. He has been praised for his formidable technique and through his eloquent phrasing, mastery of keyboard colour, and in particular his unique sound he has been called a true Poet of the Piano.
He also enjoys collaborating in Lieder recitals, and performing chamber music with many instrumentalists and ensembles, such as the Cleveland, Tokyo, Vanburgh, Vermeer, Takacs, and Ying String Quartets.
Mr. O'Conor also continues to make significant contributions to the arts in his native country, through his numerous performances of music from the traditional repertoire, and his championing of the works by Ireland's leading 19th century composer, John Field. He has become a key figure in the development of young artists through his role as Director of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and was a co-founder of the AXA Dublin International Piano Competition, of which he is Artistic Director and Chairman of the Jury.

Born March 21, 1685, Eisenach
Died July 28, 1750, Leipzig Five Toccatas
D minor, BWV 913
G minor, BWV 915
D Major, BWV 912
G Major, BWV 916
E minor, BWV 914 The title toccata comes from the Italian word meaning "touched"-the cognate terms are sonata ("sounded") and cantata ("sung")-and it was originally a piece designed to show off a keyboard player's touch and skill. The toccata was often built on a brilliant, rapid flow of sixteenth-notes, and that form has had an enduring appeal-composers as different as Schumann and Prokofiev have written toccatas for the piano. More recently, the original meaning of the term has been diluted: some twentieth-century composers have written toccatas for orchestra, and the title has evolved to the point where it simply means brilliant music. Bach, however, had a different understanding of the term altogether. The five toccatas performed on this program are multi-movement suites, often very free in form. Each contains at least one slow movement and one fugue, and some of the movements are fantasia-like in structure: though Bach often omits tempo markings, individual movements appear to fall into sections at quite different tempos, and it is up to the performer to determine the correct speeds and relation of these different parts. These toccatas are the work of a very young composer: they date from around the years 1708 to 1710, just as Bach was leaving Muhlhausen to take up the post of organist at Weimar, and all were completed before his 25th birthday. Some have felt that they are very much the work of a young composer, pointing out that the fugues in these toccatas-despite an attractive energy-can be repetitive and lack the conciseness of the mature fugues of

Klavierspielender Mensch.

Pianist Wilhelm Kempff recorded very little Bach and it's a shame given how beautifully he articulates many of the composers' most famous melodies here. As if filtered through a romantic sensbility, Kempff downplays the Baroque dance element in favor of a more contemplative approach where underlying textures and rhythms are beautifully brought to the fore. Rarely has the power of Bach been so imaginatively and uniquely revealed!
