In terms of aristocratic purity and effortless technical poise only Sergei Rachmaninoff and the tragically short-lived Dinu Lipatti can be mentioned in the same breath. Hello again
Thanks if you entered last week's Teddy Tahu Rhodes CD giveaway, judging by the response it looks like ABC Classics will have another best seller on their hands. I will be notifying winners next week so make sure you check your in-box!
Talking of new releases, ABC Classic FM's Life is Beautiful CD goes on sale in ABC Shops and Centres next week. Some of you may have received a version of this CD with your newspaper last month, however this release is the full retail disk, complete with two bonus tracks of music used in the recent ABC Classic FM promos broadcast on ABC TV. The two pieces of music used in the promos were Caccini's "Ave Maria" (Ironing is Wonderful) and an excerpt called "Montagues and Capulets" from the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev (Ironing is Thrilling).
We will be launching the CD on Classic Breakfast next Friday as part our special Beautiful Moments program which is coming live from Melbourne Zoo! Paul and Felix are packing their bags for the day to join our competition winner, veterinary student Michelle Star, as her beautiful moment is brought to life with a live performance from the Australian Guitar Quartet - Saffire.
Now, if you're in Melbourne you could be there as part of our live audience. We'll be serving up coffee and muffins from 8am so if you'd like to join Paul, Saffire and the residents of Melbourne Zoo for the final hour of the program at 8am just telephone 1300 304 677 to book a place. There are a limited number of seats so it will be first in best dressed. Of course if you're not in Melbourne you will be able to hear the entire proceedings live on ABC Classic FM - Paul will be on air with Classic Breakfast at Melbourne Zoo from 5.30am with a special final hour from 8am.

Further Steinway and Yamaha concert grands were acquired over the years including another brand new Steinway from Steinway Hall in 1995, this time a model 'D' concert grand. From 1984 concert piano hire has played a leading role in Jeffrey's work schedule and a huge number of concerts have seen a piano supplied by Shackell Pianos. Jeffrey Shackell continues to offer first class instruments for concert hire and Steinway and Yamaha grands are kept specifically for concert use. Jeffrey now has the use of the wonderful klavier roller system, the first one in the UK. This allows the moving and transporting of a full concert grand by one man! Uri Caine
Beethoven: Diabelli Variations (WINTER AND WINTER) by Peter Burwasser Philly native Uri Caine has one foot in the realm of jazz, the other in classical. Those two worlds come crashing together in this wild, funny and brilliant take on a Beethoven masterpiece. The coup de grace: Caine uses a period instrument orchestra that he conducts from a fortepiano. Beethoven would have loved it.
Philadelphia Orchestra, Wolfgang Sawallisch
Schumann: Symphonic Works (SELF-RELEASED) Our recently departed maestro was not immune to routine performance. But here is music that Sawallisch sinks his teeth into, and has the normally suave Philadelphia Orchestra sounding like a stampede of wild horses. This self-produced set serves as a farewell to a music director, but the superb sounding CDs also mark a new chapter in the history one of the most recorded ensembles ever.
Gyorgy Ligeti
Concertos, etc. (TELDEC) The Hungarian master Gyorgy Ligeti writes music of phenomenal imagination and glistening texture. His instrumental concertos can be regarded as instant classics, especially the one for violin, a rare circumstance in the new music game.

Yes. And once, I played a bit more. I had described to the audience how the sonata was one of the great Romantic works, lasting upwards of 25 minutes in the hads of a virtuoso, and about 30 minutes in my hands. I had described the major themes, everything.
There is a passage early on that is repeated much later in the work (I will look up bar numbers tomorrow if you really want) but that resolves differently and prepares for the cataclysmic finish. Sadly for me (and I learned much from this) the cuff on my left sleeve was not showing to my satisfaction. This really
