Freddy Kempf came to public attention when he did not win the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1998: this provoked protests from the audience and an outcry in the Russian press. His triumphant return visit to the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire the following year for solo and concerto appearances prompted the headline "Young pianist conquers Moscow" in the International Herald Tribune. He has since become a major international soloist with engagements this season with the Philhadelphia Orchestra and Sawallisch, San Francisco Symphony and Tortelier, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Marcello Viotti, NTO and Carlos Kalmar (including a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna) and a complete Beethoven cycle with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Daniele Gatti. He gives recitals in London, Paris and Tokyo. He records exclusively for BIS Records, for whom he has recorded recital discs of Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Schumann. In 2001, he was voted Best Young British Classical Performer in the prestigious Classical Brit Awards.

REVIEWS: divine art Beethoven Piano Music (A. Goldstone)
MUSICAL OPINION:
This new CD contains the first recording of the version for solo piano of the Fidelio Overture which was done around 1815, as part of the vocal score, the preparation of which Beethoven entrusted to Moscheles. It also contains the first movement repeat of the Sonata; from the first bar , not from the main Allegro . Anthony Goldstone makes the most convincing case for this procedure and for those who prefer the conventional repeat, he adds another version of this movement as a bonus track, so listeners can make their own judgement after hearing both versions. Appassionata: absolutely compelling. As the recording is very good indeed, and Anthony Goldstone provides his own excellent notes, this exceptionally well-filled CD is very strongly recommended.

On November 26th 2005 at London’s 900-seat Cadogan Hall, an eminent panel of judges will name Britain’s top amateur pianists. Launched by Pianist magazine and Yamaha UK, in association with Classic FM, the Pianist-Yamaha Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs is the first event of its kind in this country. There will be two categories – Classical and Modern – with the victors from each being awarded a £10,000 Yamaha piano gift certificate. ‘Piano competitions have become a way of life for professional musicians, but now it’s time for outstanding amateurs to have their moment of fame,’ explains Erica Worth, Editor-in-Chief of Pianist magazine. ‘There are lots of unknown, talented people out there – people from all walks of life who practise hard and play to a superb standard for the sheer love of the instrument, knowing full well they’re not going to earn a penny. You have to be an amateur to enter our competition. You also have to be at least 30 years old, so ambitious young music students will be out of the picture.’

FEW musicians are as divisive as pianist Freddy Kempf (right). Many critics slam his bravura, insisting he prizes extremes of speed and volume above all else.
Yet audiences will invariably jump to their feet in rapturous applause as his concerts thunder to a close like a firework display.
Still only in his 20s, recent recordings of the Beethoven Piano Trios suggest he is starting to temper some of his youthful excesses.
The temptation is always there to play both finales at breakneck speed.
The trick is to avoid doing so at the expense of the pathos buried beneath the semiquavers.
Equally fearsome are the Chopin Etudes, which Kempf is playing in their entirety.

Music Writer Pianist in his 20s shows feel for music
As the harmonic center of Freddy Kempf's piano recital Tuesday evening descended - C minor to B minor to -B-flat minor - the volume and interpretive intensity kept rising. By the end of the program, which opened the third annual Miami Festival of Discovery, it was easy to understand why there is considerable buzz about this young artist. Kempf, a Londoner just into his 20's experienced a kind of publicity generating godsend when he failed to win the 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (he placed third), much to the displeasure of the public and press. As compensation, the pianist became an instant star, with recitals and TV appearances galore in Russia. Intriguingly, Ivo Pogorelich, who gave a dismaying performance in West Palm Beach earlier this month, went through something similar when he was eliminated from the 1980 Chopin Competition in Warsaw. But where Pogorelich went on to become possibly the most self-indulgent, artistically bizarre pianist in history, Kempf gives every indication of being a sensible, distinctive musician.
