ON THE JOB The Keys to Carnegie Hall Winning the Van Cliburn gold medal gets your foot in the door. by Ginny McCormick
Every so often Jon Nakamatsu has to pinch himself. Is he really a concert pianist touring the globe and performing at Carnegie Hall? An artist whose work has been described by a New York Times in company with a story on James Michener? Nakamatsu says he was stunned by the standing ovations he received during the two-week competition in Texas. Fans gave him a toy armadillo for luck. Fort Worth Star-Telegram The prize opened doors. Besides winning $20,000 in cash and a $10,000 wardrobe allowance, Cliburn medalists are sent on a two-year concert tour in the United States and Europe. They play with orchestras and chamber groups and give solo recitals, capped by a date at Carnegie Hall. Chicago Tribune

Piano players gather at Colorado College
by Joe Kuzma
World-renowned piano soloist Helene Wickett will be at Colorado College Aug. 13-17. So you think you've got what it takes to be a famous pianist, if only you had the time? Well, now you've got some company. When Amateur Pianists International (API) presents its second annual Celebration of the Amateur Pianist at Colorado College from Aug. 13 to Aug. 17, some of the world's finest recreational players will come together for five days of competition, classes and camaraderie. The celebration, which features the Third Rocky Mountain Amateur Piano Competition (in association with the Van Cliburn Foundation), is "more than just a piano contest," said Chuck Cabell, who along with Gregory Adams founded API in 2001. "In recent years, a number of competitions for amateur pianists have sprung up, but we try to keep ours unique making it a complete celebration." To accomplish this, API has invited two internationally renowned pianists, Helene Wickett and Yakov Kasman, to teach a Master Class open to both the 22 contest participants and the general public, which will focus on stylistic and motivational techniques for amateur players. Kasman and Wickett will also perform individual recitals during the event.

The Monterey County Herald, Monday, November 16, 1998 Conductor Tamarkin
sets high standard By Barbara Rose Shuler
Special to The Herald
The first lady set the bar high for the gentlemen Sunday afternoon as she guided the Monterey Symphony through an exhilarating performance of its second concert of the season at the Sunset Center in Carmel.
Kate Tamarkin, the first woman in the symphony's 52-year history to conduct a subscription concert, distinguished herself with the ability and sophistication to lead this orchestra to exciting new levels.
Tamarkin is one of seven candidates selected to audition this season for the position of the symphony's music director.
With five more conductors yet to audition, it's premature to begin guessing how the selection committee will vote, but out-dazzling Tamarkin will be quite a challenge.
She has established a reputation as an inspired and innovative conductor, winning acclaim for her years as music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the East Texas Symphony Orchestra.
She conducted two major works from the standard repertoire: Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Dvorak's lush Symphony No. 8 in G major.
