Russian Yakov Kasman, laureate of theVan Cliburn Competition. This magnificently gifted pianist confined himself in the Russian repertoire, with Prokofiev's Second Concerto (a dazzling cadence in the fourth movement), Moussorgsky's Paintings of an Exposition (with original ideas in the enchainements), Prokofiev's Second Sonata and Shostakovich's First Concerto, very well interpreted with its alternations of tenderness and comical winks. A real master of performance showmanship
- Le Figaro
January 13, 1998 Kasman is a slight, dark, bearded man with an air of intensity and coiled energy. It must be the harnessing of that energy rather than the pianist's physical stature that accounts for the colossal amplitude of sound he can produce. This listener has seldom heard anyone, other than Garrick Ohlsson, who pours on the tone so torrentially. Not only does he have a huge sound, but he also has diabolical fleetness of fingers and pinpoint accuracy. Along with these titanium chops, though, he possesses the soul of a poet and sensibility of a painter. - Boston Globe

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 6, 2004 YAKOV KASMAN JETS CROSS-COUNTRY TO DELIVER AMAZING PERFORMANCE OF RACHMANINOFF’S PIANO CONCERTO NO. 3
Russian pianist Yakov Kasman, who made his American debut winning the silver medal in the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997, made his Portland debut Oct. 4 as the pinch hitter on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with Music Director Carlos Kalmar and the Oregon Symphony. Kasman, who arrived from Birmingham, Ala. one hour before showtime, amazed the audience and critics with a stunning performance of the difficult concerto that had the crowd on its feet. Kasman replaced scheduled soloist Louis Lortie, who notified the orchestra just prior to Sunday's concert that he was unable to perform due to tendonitis in his right arm. Kalmar and the orchestra substituted Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 for the second half of the Sunday evening performance. "It is always unfortunate when unexpected circumstances cause last-minute changes in the program," said Ryberg. "However, no one could have predicted what an incredible success each of the concerts would be; I am extremely grateful to Carlos, Yakov, the orchestra and the administrative team for making that possible."

"Yakov Kasman, who performed Saturday on the UMKC Conservatory's Signature Series, is an artist of enormous technical capacity and high artistic vision, which expresses itself through dense introspection and the feathery touch of a keyboard poet."
The Kansas City Star (2002)
"....pyrotechnics came from Russian pianist Yakov Kasman, who illuminated his performance of Beethoven’s "Emperor" Concerto with electrifying energy and sparkling tonal colors and followed the piece with a brittle, crackling march from "Love for Three Oranges," by Prokofiev. Kasman’s style glimmers with the best of Russian schooling: the unabashed caressing of a line, the tempo liberties that dance around a solid beat, the virile technique and voluptuous sound....[He] communicated a trance-like focus and assertive poetic lyricism that played with - and played off conductor Carl St. Clair’s stricter adherence to classical proportions." Los Angeles Times (1998)
"Russian-born Yakov Kasman... did not simply pound at the keys as so many pianists do with this difficult concerto with many moods. He found the yearning heart of it, which is so much a part of the unabashedly emotional Tchaikovsky...it was in the elegant longing of the first and second movements that his artistry left the audience breathless."

DAVID STABLER
At 6 p.m. Sunday the phone rang with the news every symphony manager dreads.... At noon Monday, Yakov Kasman's phone rang in Birmingham, Ala. Calmer was on the line, asking if the 37-year-old Russian could play the Rachmaninoff concerto in Portland that night. Kasman, who won the silver medal in the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, was just about to begin a day of teaching at the University of Alabama. He'd never been to Portland, had never met Kalmar and had never played a concerto without a rehearsal. And this was Rach 3. He hadn't played a note of it since March.
One seat remained on a plane to Portland. It left in 90 minutes...
Kasman didn't hesitate. He would take the risk.
