GALLERY HYUNDAI

To Jan. 16: "Robert Indiana." In his first exhibition held in Korea, American artist Robert Indiana displays his iconic pop images from the '60s, including the widely reprinted image of the word "LOVE" arranged in a square. Indiana's works, usually depicting words, numbers and logos, have been interpreted as symbols of the bold and oftentimes hollow commercialism of America.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

To Jan. 16: "Good Chairs: Chairs We Want to Have." The latest in a series of exhibitions devoted to everyday objects, this one examines the chair in three different capacities: as a historical icon from the 19th century to the present, as a medium for experimental art and design and as a barometer of sociocultural norms.
Exhibition hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; the last visitor will be admitted at 6 p.m. Admission is 3,000 won for adults and 2,000 won for students.

The Verdi Quartet well known by its recordings, broadcast, international performances and competitions was formed in 1985 at the College of Music in Cologne (Klner Musikhochschule). After studies with the Amadeus Quartett they also joined master classes of the Schostakowitsch Quartett, Moskau and the Melos Quartett, Stuttgart. The musicians are still in contact with their mentors like Martin Lovett and Bruno Giuranna who have also performed with them. This joint effort led to contacts to great composers like Benjamin Britten whose 3rd String-Quartet was performed first by the Amedus Quartett in cooperation with the composer himself. His notes were fascinating as well as formative for the Verdi Quartett. Other preferred composers of the modern classical music are Kodaly, Bartok, and Schostakowitsch.
But the Quartet's musical favourites are the classical pieces for string quartets. Following the recording of Schubert¡¯s string quartets (Hnssler), the next big recording project will be Brahms¡¯ complete chamber music works for strings. The expressed aim of the musicians is a Beethoven recording project.

Recordare Announces MusicXML 1.0
LOS ALTOS, CA (January 14, 2004) – Recordare LLC, an Internet music software and publishing company, has released version 1.0 of MusicXML. MusicXML is the first file format that allows the common Western music notation used in printed sheet music to be fully shared among a wide range of computer applications. Recordare has also released new versions of its Dolet for Finale and Dolet for Sibelius plug-ins that support MusicXML 1.0. The Dolet plug-ins serve as "universal translators" between music notation programs. Dolet for Finale 1.3 reads and writes MusicXML files, allowing Finale to communicate with any other application that supports MusicXML. Dolet for Sibelius 1.1 writes MusicXML files that can be shared with users of Finale, Turandot, and other programs that can read MusicXML. "While MusicXML support has been shipping with Finale and SharpEye Music Reader for some time, we wanted real-life experience with a wider range of applications before releasing version 1.0," stated Michael Good, CEO of Recordare LLC. "Now that applications such as MuseBook Score and the Rosegarden sequencer use MusicXML, we have reached that goal." Korean pianist Choong-Mo Kang used AMuseTec’s MuseBook Score in his December 20 performance of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier II at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall. The MuseBook is an electronic music stand that displays MusicXML scores and automates page turns for the performer. "The MusicXML format is a great interface for various musical needs," stated Doill Jung, CEO of AMuseTec Co., Ltd. "MusicXML is very well-suited as a solution for us, and I hope it will be the standard of the music industry in the near future."

Real Estate Weekly Site updated Thursday, August 05, 2004 01:42 PM Search Site: Canadian pianist Naida Cole performs at this year's Festival Vancouver. Festival Vancouver spotlights Cuba and Korea By Gudrun Will Korea and Cuba make up two major stops for aural armchair travellers attending the third-now annual-Festival Vancouver (Aug. 4 to 17). Organizers decided to highlight the two countries as a way of focusing the rambling scope of the event's musical offerings, which cover styles from jazz and opera to world and chamber music. Each year from now on, the spotlight will pick out guests from one or two distinct parts of the world, explained administrative director Morna Edmundson. (Advance tip: next year targets France.) "This is a big change," she added. "We felt these were good bets that could include a lot of the elements. We are looking to spread the geography around." Strains from Havana are familiar to festival-goers from previous years. Popular Cuban jazz pianist Ern n L¢pez-Nussa returns for a repeat appearance with his quintet, while the six-member group Vocal Sampling, on their first Vancouver visit, will air an orchestral-sounding lineup of guaracha, son, bolero and salsa using just their voices. Also making an inaugural trip is Tr¡o Trovarroco from Santa Clara province.
