It's the suffering that gives jazz its spiritual dimension. That's what our young jazzmen today have forgotten. Only through suffering is a true thing born. Mary Lou Williams, on her youth “It must have really shaken my mother. She actually dropped me and ran out to get the neighbors to listen to me,” Mary Lou Williams recalled. At no more than three or four, she had leaned over to a harmonium (a small pump organ) her mother was playing, repeating the melody she had just heard. Born Mary Alfrieda Scruggs in a shotgun house in Atlanta’s dirt-poor Edgewood neighborhood on May 8, 1910, Mary Lou Williams was a prodigy. Her extended family, with five-year-old Mary and her sister in tow, moved to Pittsburgh, which offered opportunities to all newcomers as America entered World War I. The introspective young girl was already looking to music to assuage her loneliness and early experiences with racism. By age eight, "the little piano girl of East Liberty," as she had become known, was regularly playing for parties, wakes, silent films, and, at least on one occasion, in a brothel. She, influenced by early records of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson, had already developed a pleasing repertoire of waltzes, marches, sentimental ballads, ragtime and light classics. Country Review Archive: 1999 Wow... You're pretty hardcore. Well, here you go: even more of my ever-so-opinionated opinions about all that stuff they call "country music" these days. Just remember... you asked for it! Recent Releases (circa 1999) Mandy Barnett "I've Got A Right To Cry" (Sire, 1999) An absurdly derivative recreation of Patsy Cline's smooth, pioneering proto-countrypolitan sound. Legendary Decca arranger Owen Bradley who produced many of Cline's biggest hits helps sculpt this album, and studio veterans such as pianist Pig Robbins and guitarist Harold Bradley refabricate the feel of the old Decca sessions. Nonetheless, this dose of old-timer authenticity doesn't compensate for Barnett lack of Cline's slick, bluesy bite and soulful delivery... When not simply mimicking Patsy's intonations, Barnett slips perilously close to approximating Linda Ronstadt's lesser efforts. Sure, the song selection is cool (not a Cline cover among the lot), but neither Barnett nor her band are speaking with an original voice, and this homage founders in comparison to the real thing. Peter Watrous, New York Times In March of 2004, Joshua Redman's San Francisco Jazz Collective launched a repertory band with Ms. Rosnes as the pianist. The collective is designed to workshop and perform new and newly arranged compositions, and has recently released a three-CD set featuring originals and the work of Ornette Coleman. Her recordings have won many awards here and in her native Canada, where she has three "Junos" - best record of the year in Canada.As I mentioned, she has zillions of recordings, and I'll just pick a few here that I like a lot. I'll not include the DRBB disk, because I haven't heard it - it got good reviews though - and, to be honest, her most recent CD, "Life on Earth" is just a tad too world music-like for my taste: "She offers exquisite balances of delicacy and power, witty and weighted ideas, assertiveness and deference." Fred Bouchard Downbeat "Art and Soul," Blue Note, 1999, 7243 99997 2 5 is a wonderful, straight ahead trio disk (mostly - there are a couple of guest appearances by Dianne Reeves and Richard Bona). I think the opening track, Blues Connotation, is especially good.

Born into a Welsh family on April 29, 1904 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Russ Morgan was encouraged to express himself musically from the tender age of seven. He came by his ability naturally since his father, a coal-mine foreman, was a former musician who played drums in the local band in his spare time with his mother, before her marriage, had been a pianist in a vaudeville act. Almost at the same age that he began to study piano, he began to work in the mines in order to earn money to help support his family and pay for his lessons. At 14, he earned extra money as a pianist performing in a Scranton theater. With his earnings, he purchased another instrument, a trombone. A few years later, in 1921, he used the trombone while working with the Scranton Sirens. This band was one of the hottest in the Pennsylvania area during the 20's. In fact some of its alumni, such as Jimmy Dorsey on sax and clarinet, Billy Lustig on violin and Tommy Dorsey on trombone (who took Russ' place when he left the organization) went on to become famous. He decided, at 18, to try and further his career by going to New York. By 1925, at the age of 21 he was arranging for John Philip Sousa and Victor Herbert. He continued to gain experience by joining Paul Specht's orchestra and toured Europe with the orchestra. Contemporaries of Russ' in this orchestra were Arthur Schutt, Don Lindley and Chauncey Morehouse. Orville Knapp, Paul Whiteman, Charlie Spivak and Artie Shaw also played in this orchestra during the 1920's.

DICK BUCKLEY'S ARCHIVES OF JAZZ Dick Buckley's Archives of Jazz was a favorite program broadcast by WBEZ , the National Public Radio affiliate in Chicago. In conjunction with the station, Its host, a knowledgeable and respected jazz scholar, donated to the Music Information Center, 427 Archives of Jazz master tapes which originally aired from 1989-93. Shelly Manne By James Strain Widely regarded as a most versatile and musical drummer, Shelly Manne (1920-1984) was a founding father of the West Coast jazz scene in the 1950s. Manne possessed a phenomenal technique, which he channeled into some of the most creative, lyrical drumming ever heard. His solos were unique, sometimes humorous, and above all else, musical. When asked how Shelly might have responded upon receiving the Hall of Fame award, his widow, Florence "Flip" Manne, replied: "He would be astounded by how many people remember him, and deeply humbled to be honored by this award. Just before his death he remarked that there were so many new young lions playing drums, he didn't think anyone knew who he was any more." Shelly's father, Max Manne, himself a famous drummer, exposed Shelly to a life of music from early childhood. As his father worked at the Roxy in New York City, Shelly was aware of the talents of PAS Hall of Famer Billy Gladstone at Radio City Music Hall, and after a brief attempt at the saxophone, Manne took his first drum lesson from Gladstone in the basement of the famous hall. He had been employed by Standard Oil Co. of Indiana and by Portable Elevator Manufacturing. He was executive director of Immanuel Bible Foundation for 23 years. He was a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite, Masonic Lodge 43, and the Kiwanis Club. He had served as president of the BroMenn Advisory Council. He was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife Aileen, two children, two stepchildren, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. June 10, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. She was a desk clerk at the Alpha Park Library in Bartonville during the 1970s. Earlier, she was a teacher at Whittier School in Peoria and a substitute teacher and tutor at several Peoria County schools. She is survived by a son, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. April 30, Dunlap. He retired as the Dunlap postmaster in 1978. He was a World War II Army Air Forces veteran. He played on the Bradley University baseball team. Survivors include three children and seven grandchildren. April 13, Morristown, Indiana. She was a secretary at Southeastern Career Center in Versailles from 1967 to 1983. She is survived by six children and 11 grandchildren.

If you’re a lucky blues fan, you’ll find the 78 rpm 4-record album by Champion Jack Dupree and guitarist Gabriel Brown. More likely you’ll see items by Bon Bon and His Buddies (Jan Savitt’s vocalist), the Korn Kobblers, or perhaps reissues from the 1939-Varsity label by Harry James, Frank Trumbauer, Vincent Lopez, Sammy Kaye, or the Three Suns. The curious thing about the Joe Davis label is the inscription in the lower margin of the label: “Gennett Record Division, Starr Piano Company.” Everyone who has delved into early jazz discography knows that the Gennett label introduced Bix Beiderbecke, the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver’s band (with Louis Armstrong and Johnny Dodds), Hoagy Carmichael, and numerous other jazz, blues, country, and pop performers. So what does Gennett have to do with Joe Davis, a songwriter and singer who recorded for Columbia in the late teens and twenties? He later purchased most of the short-lived Varsity label’s hundreds of master records when they went bankrupt in the early 1940s, but had a tiny shellac ration from which to press the records.
