Jim Ferguson Bassist/Vocalist I was born James Warner Ferguson in Jefferson City, Missouri on December 10, 1950, the third child of James Austin and Fern Webb Ferguson. My father had been a high-school music teacher for much of the previous two decades, but by the time I was born, he had gone into church music. Before my second birthday, my family moved to South Carolina, where Dad took a music position in a large metropolitan church. I began singing in the childrens' choir when I was four years old. (Since Dad was in charge of the music program, I didn't miss many rehearsals.) When I got a little older, my parents started me on piano lessons with the church organist, but even though I continued the piano lessons into my teens, I was always more interested in singing. In my junior year of high school, I began studying voice with a teacher at the University of South Carolina. Then, during my senior year, I bought a string bass. The impetus for that purchase was the score of a youth musical being performed at church. It called for a bass in the rhythm section, and though Dad had never wanted me in popular music because of the stereotyped "performer's lifestyle," he let me play for the youth choir. I continued my voice study at Carolina, and after I graduated from high school, I entered the School of Music with a major in voice. It wasn't until after my freshman year that I started my first formal bass lessons.

I, NO. 21 JANUARY 12, 1939 TEN CENTS CLAUDE HOPKINS WAXES FOR AMMOR Claude Hopkins made his first recording studio appearance in some time last week, when his fourteen-piece orchestra cut six sides for AMMOR Recording Company, latest entry in the field of commercial waxings. Besides Hopkins' theme, "I Believe You", the titles recorded were "Out To Lunch", "What's The Matter With Me?", "A Little Rain Must Fall", "The Singing Hills", and "Yacht Club Swing". The personnel of Hopkins' band, at recording, was: Albert Snaer, Russell Jones, Herman Autrey, trumpets; Ray Hogan, Norman Green, Bernard Asdier, trombones; Howard Johnson, Norman Thornton, Bobby Sands, Benny Waters, saxes; Hopkins, piano; Walter Jones, guitar; Elmer James, bass; Walter Johnson, drums. Vocals were sung by Orlando Bobison. Chicago Chicago, March 5. Baby Dodds' band still sounds good out at the 9750 Club. Johnny Dodds plays on Saturday nights only, as his, health forbids more. His teeth have been fixed and he sounds as good as ever, sometimes even better. The band finishes at the 9750 on March 18th and there is no booking in sight. Manager of the 9750 says they just can't afford a band, which is very true. He is trying to get Baby booked elsewhere, but with no success as yet. I heard Benny Goodman record on Friday, before the band went on vacation. Benny recorded an out standing Bud Johnson number, and a Fletcher Henderson arrangement of "I'm Coming Virginia", which "Smack" says is the best arrangement he's ever made. The band played good stuff, but certainly stylized. I missed Charlie Christian; but John Hammond says he should be back in a couple of months. Incidentally Bud Johnson recorded with Lionel Hampton the day before.

I, NO. 21 FEBRUARY 16, 1940 TEN CENTS SIDNEY BECHET IS GUEST SOLOIST ON PHILLY HOT CLUB RADIO SHOW Sidney Bechet, who returned from Fonda last week, spent three banner days in Philadelphia. The soprano sax soloist was wined and dined by the newly organized Philadelphia Hot Club Wednesday evening, and later appeared on "Jazz Hot", the club's bi-weekly radio program on local station WHAT. Before a studio audience of over 100 hot club members John Peck, Chairman, called an official meeting, at which Bechet was formally elected Honorary President. Following the broadcast a marvelous session was held at a private club, at which "Pops" exhausted the musicians accompanying him. Friday night Bechet fronted an uninspired, disappointing colored band at Temple University's Tyler Art School. Joe Greenberg, art instructor and Hot Club band pianist, took over the bench at Sidneys request for a fine 30-minute session. Bechet may be playing at Nick's in New York City very soon. He said: ...I started playing in North Beach in the 50's. Leo Wright had the job first, he was working at the Jazz Cellar, or just the Cellar we called it. Dizzy Gillespie came to town and decided he would take Leo so when Leo left I got the job at the Cellar ...". She is the founder and pianist of The Moebius Ensemble, a group dedicated to fostering cross-cultural exchanges between musicians and composers in Eastern Europe and in the U.S. The ensemble, now in residence at Columbia, has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including 3 from the Rockefeller Foundation Grants, two from the National Endowment for the Arts ("The Fund for US Artists), and one from the Kousssevitzky Foundation for the commission of a new work by Jonathan Kramer. Elmar Oliveira, violin Carol Wincenc, flute Ursula Oppens, piano David Shifrin, clarinet Joseph Silverstein and Max Bragado-Darman conducting The Louisville Orchestra d'Note 1016 (Allegro) 74 minutes This is the first new Louisville Orchestra release in some years-and appears on a fast-growing new independent label, too-and its generous survey of four concertante works by Joan Tower proves to be a revelation for this listener. On the basis of her well-exposed orchestral works such as Sequoia and Silver Ladders (both products of the early 80s, she had seemed to be primarily a concocter of a species of lushly scored, hedonistically picturesque, but somewhat emotionally shallow soundscapes couched in a generically post-stravinskian, quasi-minimalist style. But these four highly concentrated one-movement concertos-written over a six-year span from 1985 and 1991-show Tower to have moved naturally into a much more structurally rigorous and texturally lean dimension-"lean and mean" might be a more apt description , as these are far from complacent works: they are tensile, pithy, full of vim and vinegar.
