The pianist/composers are former Narada artist Spencer Brewer (who also produced and engineered the album in his Laughing Coyote Studio Marilynn Tollefsen Michael Coughenour , and Tom Ganoung . While the artists' playing and composing styles are distinct and different from each other, this CD maintains a smooth, calming effect and defies categorization. All four composers are seasoned and very accomplished - this is no light-weight fluff. I loved the album from the first listen, and found that I enjoyed it more and more, hearing something new each time. On the first album, I felt that Brewer's pieces were far superior to the others, but this time it's a really great mix that works exceptionally well. Spencer Brewer contributed five pieces to this collection. "

Amazing Grace In the 1770s, John Newton, a former slave trader turned evangelical preacher, was moved to write new words to fit a traditional tune. His inspired composition has come to be one of the best-loved songs in America. For some, it is an easily recognizable folk song. For others, it is a moving statement of faith. I want to reflect both the secular and the sacred in these variations. 2. Let Us Break Bread Together Here is another spiritual of unknown origin that was used by slaves hoping to escape to freedom. Used primarily today during communion, Let Us Break Bread Together was originally a "gathering song" beginning with the phrase "Let us praise God together on our knees." Photo by Joe Zoeckler Zucker and Zoeckler met in Venezuela, where they were both members of the Filarmonica de Caracas. They moved to Merida, Venezuela, in the Andes, playing in the Orquesta Filarmonica de Merida together. They left for Florida in 1982 but soon decided they really wanted to travel in Asia. After four months of trekking in Nepal and Thailand and exploring India and China, they came back to New Mexico, where there were cello and violin openings in the Orchestra of Santa Fe. They “paid their musical dues” piecing together a living performing, teaching privately, teaching at United World College, playing in the Roswell, Santa Fe and NM symphonies as well as the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, and working as NM Artists in Residence. Their current challenge and delight is raising their son, Leo.

In Person A Musical Journey The Jazz Scene in Champaign-Urbana from 1957 to 1973 By Tony Zamora On the UIUC campus, the Illini Union hosted jazz sessions that were appropriately called "Jazz U Like It." In later years, the House of Chin showcased great local jazz combos. In addition, an underground series of jazz concerts were frequently held at the Red Herring in the Channing-Murray Foundation. Treno's on Goodwin Street also sponsored Saturday afternoon jazz sets that featured the Tony Zamora Jazz Ensemble that attracted large audiences from the campus and C-U community. The local Amvets Club featured the late Count demon and his Demons of Jazz. The band was led by Count Demon (nee) William Evans and consisted of several outstanding musicians who were introduced to the C-U community by the late "Brother" Jack McDuff. McDuff, a native of Champaign, started out as a bassist/pianist, and later switched to and concentrated on the Hammond organ. By then, McDuff had already gained national and international prominence as one of the nation's leading premier jazz organists. When I first visited these local clubs, I couldn't believe the high caliber of jazz that I was hearing when I initially heard Count Demon's band. The group was comprised of the late Joe Bradley, piano, Waymon (Punchy) Atkinson, tenor saxophone and the late Count Demon, drums and vocals. Bass duties alternated between local bassist Bill Boyle, who worked at C-U's School Music Service, Dewey Duerson (Indianapolis) and Bill Yancey (Chicago).

In Champaign-Urbana, there has always been a very real line—it's called University Avenue—between the black community and the white community, or between the black community and the University community. The black community lived, and still lives, on the "North End." They had their own network of musicians and musical haunts. If you were really into the music, you were welcome in their environment. Black musicians played in white environments too, but the two races were not often seen mingling together. The University of Illinois Jazz Band was formed during the Civil Rights movement and the band was into its heyday when Black Power became a movement. Of the black, local, jazz musicians, some were so into the music that they didn't think of their experiences as racist until they remembered events much later. Others had bitter racist encounters that deeply affected them. And still others tried hard to build a relationship between blacks and whites that would bring the community closer together. We're still working on race relations in Champaign-Urbana today. And we still have hopes that the art of jazz can help bring us together with its emphasis on creativity and community.

Soon after moving to Chicago in 1927, he switched, from the Drums to piano. In these early years, Slack worked with Johnny Tobin's orch. In 1931, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he worked with bands led by Henry Halsted, Earl Burtnett, Archie Rosate and Lennie Hayton. During 1934-36, he worked with Ben Pollack's band, and from 1936-'39 was part of Jimmy Dorsey's band, where he worked alongside drummer Ray McKinley. Since Freddie had started his career as a drummer, there was a natural affinity between the two men. Between 1939-'41, he was the pianist for The Will Bradley - Ray McKinley Orchestra, so named because both men were partners in the new venture. Slack drew much public acclaim for his piano work on the band's famous recording of "Beat Me Daddy, Eight To The Bar", as well as on many other Bradley recordings. These helped launch a boogie-woogie fad. (Slack was also heard on some Big Joe Turner recordings during this time, and with another 'Blues Man' - "T Bone" Walker, later during Slack's Capitol Records days.) Early in 1941, Slack left the Bradley-McKinley band and his place was briefly taken by Bob Holt, from Worcester, MA., before being replaced by Billy Maxted.
