THE HUNTINGTON DOCENTS' EXPERIENCE WITH CAMERATA PACIFICA
By Michelle Mackel At the All Volunteer Council meeting on September 5, 2003 an announcement was made that Volunteers were needed to assist with the series of chamber music concerts to be given by Camerata Pacifica of Santa Barbara at The Huntington during their 2003-2004 season. Four tried-and-true Garden Docents immediately answered the call: Dick Malott, Yllka Runkle, Bea Whyld, and this writer. Dick, ready to take tickets On September 22, we met in Friends Hall for the first concert, not really knowing what was expected of us. However, in just a few minutes we had organized ourselves into ticket takers, program distributor, and usher. We also stuff programs with the current handouts and collect the seat markers after each performance. We have now performed these duties with such regularity, we consider ourselves professionals in these fields.

From Creating an Imaginative Life- Michael Jones
    Michael Jones
    Introduction
    new!
T wenty years ago Michael Jones left his leadership and consulting practice to create a new home for himself. It was to play his own music and share this music with the world. This dream led to the creation of Pianoscapes (1985), a recording of original piano solos which also became the first release on the Narada

    Finding Our Way Home
    A New Leadership Story
    The Roots of Aliveness
So for leaders (and Michael defines a leader as anyone who desires to lead a complete and fulfilling life) to ask where they come from, what has shaped and inspired them and when they first felt a sense of belonging and love of place, they can begin to re- imagine how to create a living environment so that they and other can continue to learn and develop. Too often our gifts go unnoticed and undeveloped because we could not find the right home for them to take seed and grow. In his talks and seminars Michael draws upon his own music and stories to help others re-experience the original patternings of home. In so doing he offers a memorable and deeply personal experience on how the imagination can transform the ordinary to the extraordinary and help others connect to the roots of aliveness in their own life and work.

Isham Jones led one of the finest dance bands of the 1920s and wrote many hits, notably " It Had To Be You I'll See You In My Dreams Swingin' Down the Lane
Isham, pronounced "eye- sham," moved to Chicago in 1915 and continued composing, often working in the World War I period with lyricist Olaf ("Ole") Olsen, a member of Jones's early Chicago band (later, in 1926, Ole Olsen and His Orchestra recorded three titles for Pathé Actuelle). One of their works from 1917 is among the first songs to refer to the new music called "jass." Actually, the spelling used is even more unorthodox: the song is "That's Jaz!" Possibly the songwriters had not seen the word "jazz" (or "jass") in print when they wrote the song. Its lyrics refer to saxophones and banjos, so the writers did not have the Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB) specifically in mind though they would have known the sensation the band made in Chicago in 1916. It is possible that Jones's own band at the time featured saxophones and banjos.
The first Isham Jones tune to be recorded was probably the comic "Oh! Min!" It is sung by Edward Meeker on Blue Amberol 3514, issued in August 1918. Another 1918 composition by Isham Jones is "Indigo Blues," recorded by

King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band played. During her stay there she became friends with Oliver's pianist Lil Hardin who was also from Memphis. After this Hunter became a full fledged star and was billed as the "Sweetheart of Dreamland". After her show at the Dreamland she would take a train to another club and sing some more. One night her piano player was shot and killed while they were on stage. Clearly, gangsterism was out of control in Chicago. In 1921 Alberta moved to New York and launched her recording career with the Black Swan label with Fletcher Henderson's Novelty Orchestra, but she switched to Paramount in 1922 where Fletcher Henderson continued to accompany her on the piano. Hunter wrote a lot of her own material and her song " Down Hearted Blues ", became Bessie Smith's first record in 1923. That same year she became the first African-American singer to be backed up by a White band, when the Original Memphis Five supported her on " Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do " and " If You Want To Keep Your Daddy Home ", and "

    It was February 1956
    Born in Humphreys County Mississippi
near the blues-drenched Yazoo City on February 7th 1932, Smith had been raised in Louise, MS with his grandparents following the divorce of his parents. After a spell in the Air Force, and with music very much his passion, he made the move to the tune-town known as Memphis, Tennessee determined to make his fortune.
    The following Sunday (5th),
    By the 26th of May
it was number 1 on the Memphis charts, helped no doubt by exposure from the local jocks and personal appearances all over town. After selling over sixty eight thousand copies by July, it was obvious that another session was needed to re-enforce this encouraging start. None of Sam's other stars had sold more copies with their debut, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins…. The summer included a mouth-watering week long tour of the Memphis area with Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Eddie Bond and new boys, Roy Orbison and the Teen Kings whose Ooby Dooby had just been released on Sun. Not a bad night out for the local's! The tour culminated with a show at Overton Shell park in Memphis in which Elvis made a non-performing appearance.

    Warren Haynes: Wanted Man
    By Alan Paul
Warren Haynes has become the most in-demand guitarist in straight-ahead rock. This summer, he will be featured in Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers Band and Phil and Friends. He’ll spend the rest of time in the studio with the likes of John Paul Jones and John Entwistle. In a Guitar World Online exclusive interview, Haynes breaks it all down. Even though James Brown has probably trademarked the title "hardest working man in show business" it would be hard for even the Godfather of Soul to deny that Warren Haynes should be wearing the crown these days. The guitarist keeps a schedule that would have almost anyone else questioning his or her sanity. For the past year, Haynes has been busier than an ant at a picnic, constantly touring or recording with Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers Band or Phil and Friends. www.allmanbrothersband.com and www.philzone.com

    Philly Joe Jones
from: More info Billy Boy - Milestones Miles Davis Julia - Showcase Philly Joe Jones... Philly Joe Jones was born with the name Joseph Rudolph Jones in the city of Philadelphia on July 15, 1923. His mother, a piano teacher taught him the basics in music. In his formative years he also studied the drums with drummers the likes of Cozy Cole and Charles Wilcoxon, receiving valuable advise from Art Blakey and a then younger Max Roach. He established himself as "Philly Joe" Jones, from the name of the city of his birth, to distinguish himself from the mainstay Count Basie’s drummer, Jo Jones. But just as Jo Jones established the rhythm section standard in the 30’s and 40’s, Philly Joe would do the same in the 50’s. Chambers and Jones would be the dynamic rhythm section popular among soloists such as Sonny Rollins and Art Pepper. Jones was on many Blue Note recordings and was virtually house drummer for the Blue Note, Riverside, and Prestige record labels. His style has been described as "too loud" or "like a machine gunner." However one must listen carefully to appreciate his precision and energy. One excellent example of Jones’ playing can be heard of Coltrane’s album, Blue Train. Jones’ first album was in 1958, an LP for the Riverside record label. On his album were players that would become well known in the business: Nat Adderley, Julian Priester, Johnny Griffin and Tommy Flanagan. In his prime, Jones won great recognition. In Downbeat magazine polls he won the new star category on drums in 1957 and the main drum category in 1962. He was second place in 1961, second to Max Roach.
