BEST PICTURE:
Chicago
Gangs of New York
The Hours
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Pianist
PREDICTION: Curtis: Chicago Because every year the winner is the movie I have the least interest in seeing out of the five nominations. The trend continues here. Dan: Chicago This one seems to have the momentum, and Gangs' Best Picture win is not already wrapped up in a pink ribbon like it's Director's win is, so this is a free for all in my opinion. Warren: Chicago Probably the most overrated film of 2002, but it's well-made entertainment guaranteed not to offend (or challenge) a soul. Ryan: Chicago The day that I walked out of my first showing, I knew that it would make 200 million dollars and that it would win Best Picture. I'm sticking with my second prediction. This is a true crowd-pleaser that brings the musical back in a rousing way and the Academy has and will continue to go gaga over it. PERSONAL VOTE: Curtis: The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers The scale of this movie was so grand and epic that it simply deserves it. Amazing to watch, like it or not.

June 24, 2005 "And when it was over, it felt like a dream," warbled Neil Young in "Broken Arrow," one of his finest early pieces. The dream of lasting a long time is what anyone opening a nightclub, roadhouse, or other music-entertainment venue hopes for. When it comes to feeling like a dream, of course, you've heard what they say about the '60s if you remember them, you probably weren't there to begin with.
The average life span such businesses can look forward to in Santa Fe tends to be about six to seven years. That is, if you're lucky enough to get past the first few months. Figuratively speaking, Cerrillos Road and Guadalupe Street are littered with broken rock dreams.

What can you say about this thing? That it's a multiple platinum album stuffed with radio favorites? That it's the epitome of soulless, by-the-numbers 70s heavy rock, completely derivative and so testosterone-ridden that it makes Zeppelin sound cultured? That it's more or less the loudest, riffiest, catchiest damn rock record of the whole decade? Uh, I guess so. You probably already have your mind made up about this kind of proto-grunge hedonism anyway, so it doesn't really matter what I say. The details: their third record but first real breakthrough; powered by Steven Tyler's screeching, vaguely Robert Plant-like vocals and Joe Perry's blustery, overcharged guitar riffs; written mostly by Tyler working either with Perry or bassist Tom Hamilton; and featuring three classic tunes: the head-banging, triple-time title track, the swaggering "Walk This Way," and the fevery, slithering "Sweet Emotion." Live at Steinway Hall
liner notes
Hank's notes:
More about Mike Jones. This is his third CHIAROSCURO release, and it may well be his most interesting. It not only shows him at this best, but also demonstrates his encyclodpedic knowledge of songs, his ability to interpret them in an exciting way, and present a flawless seventy minute program that was well-paced and interesting, from beginning to end. I have no idea if he'd picked out the nine songs and two medleys before he sat down at the piano, or if he knew exactly what he'd play, and had been rehearsing it day after day for weeks on end. I tend to doubt it. I didn't see a list anywhere, and Mike doesn't seem to operate that way. He's more of a whatever happens, happens, kind of guy. But no matter, even if he'd been practicing the songs for weeks, the result was still the same; an exceptional performance.
In many ways, the strength of Mike's playing is also one of his weaknesses, at least from a commercial standpoint. All he does is play songs, usually older songs. He's an interpreter of the compositions of others,. Mike is one of those artists who is primarily an interpreter, not a composer. Most of the virtuoso pianists, in almost any form of music, fall into that category; there have been few monumental performers who wrote exceptional, lasting compositions. In this century, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Fats Waller come to mind as two who did, and Vladimir Horowitz and Art Tatum as two who didn't.
