Artist: Whitfield, Wesla
Title of CD: September Songs
Record Label: HighNote
The indefatigable Wesla Whitfield is at it again, breaking new ground on her umpteenth
album, September Songs (HighNote), by uniting with various combinations of sidemen to concurrently explore the songbooks of Alec Wilder, Kurt Weill and Harry Warren. Backed by husband Mike Greensill's elegantly subdued trio (the comfortable Whitfield setting we're most accustomed to) and the Gary Foster Horns, she opens with a "September Song" that's more bitter than sweet, then shifts gears, augmenting the trio with the lilting strings of the Kronos Quartet for a dreamy "Speak Low" and a splendidly clever medley of "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "Jeepers Creepers." Next, she swaps out Greensill's trio for Tommy Flanagan's for a lively spin through Wilder's wittily upbeat "Lovers and Losers." The Foster Horns then return to lend a touch of big band vivacity to "I Had the Craziest Dream." Finally, Whitfield

Marin Alsop, the Baltimore Symphony’s newly named music director-designate, conducts Kurt Weill; two labels offer intriguing looks back at the great George Szell. Weill: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 (Naxos 8.557481)
Tower: In Memory, Big Sky, Wild Purple , other works (Naxos 8.559215) Music for Flute and Percussion (Naxos 8.557782)
Marin Alsop’s appointment last month as music director of the Baltimore Symphony touched off bitter squabbling between the orchestra’s management and musicians. There’s been no controversy, however, about Alsop’s work with England’s Bournemouth Symphony. Her success in rejuvenating that orchestra has burnished her already considerable reputation and no doubt was a factor in Baltimore’s decision to hire her. Alsop puts her Bournemouth orchestra through its paces in a new Naxos release containing two major works by Kurt Weill. Symphony No. 1, written in 1921, is a craggy, youthful piece reflecting the tumult of Weimar Germany. The second Symphony, composed in Paris in 1933 after Weill escaped Hitler’s regime, is considered by many to be a neglected masterwork. Another side of Weill is on display in Lady in the Dark: A Symphony Nocturne , a brooding and melodic work adapted from a 1940 Broadway musical by Weill, Moss Hart, and Ira Gershwin.

John Nelson's recording of Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini
The year gets off to a strong start with several intriguing releases, from a 13th-century song cycle to a new recording of Berlioz's
Benvenuto Cellini. Busnois: Missa O Crux Lignum , Motets, Chansons (Harmonia Mundi HMU 907333) Music for Alfonso the Wise (Harmonia Mundi HMU 907390) Bach: French Suites (Ambroisie AMB 9960) Fans of early music will no doubt want to check out two new releases from Harmonia Mundi. The Orlando Consort, one of today's most highly regarded champions of Medieval and Renaissance music, offers a survey of sacred and secular works by Antoine Busnois, a versatile composer whose career came to an end just about the time Columbus sailed the ocean blue. The Dufay Collective, an ensemble that performs without a conductor, offers music from 13th-century Spain in its first disc for its new label. The title, Music for Alfonso the Wise , refers to a king of Castile and Leon who was known as a patron of the arts and sciences. The CD includes a collection of seven songs that tell the story of a woman waiting for the return of her belovedperhaps the earliest known song cycle.
