Artists Catalogue/Shop Tours ... About ECM A new name for ECM's ever-expanding roster of Scandinavian talent. "Different Rivers" is Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim's first album under his own name. Some biographical information: Trygve Seim was born in Oslo in 1971, and took up the saxophone at the age of 14. His earliest inspirations were, he says, Jan Garbarek, electric Miles Davis, and ECM's documentation of European improvising. Seim studied jazz at the Trondheim Conservatory. During those studies he met pianist Christian Wallumrød, co-producer of the present disc and an ECM artist in his own right (see "No Birch" ECM 1628) and together they formed the group Airamero, which made Scandinavian tours with Kenny Wheeler and played in Germany with Nils Petter Molvær. In 1992, Seim, now based back in Oslo, joined the "little big band" Oslo 13 and appears on its 1993 album "Live"; when leader Jon Balke left the group in 1995, Seim and fellow saxophonist Morten Halle became the ensemble's principal composers. In 1993, Seim co-founded the quartet The Source, a group originally rooted in the free jazz tradition but which has since developed a personal style of its own. The Source has played several concerts in which they are joined by the Cikada String Quartet (the classical ensemble that has appeared on ECM recordings by Bent Sørensen, Annette Peacock, Arild Andersen and Mats Edén). A Source/Cikada album will be issued by ECM in 2001. 1993 was also the year in which Seim launched the Trondheim Kunstorkester, a large ensemble containing many of the players now featured on "Different Rivers". "We started as a free music orchestra. I would just write small themes and then we would improvise: all of us were in the free music area at the time. In recent years, structure has become more im-portant to me, and some of the pieces we play now are totally composed."

Artists Catalogue/Shop Tours ... About ECM From the very beginning of its history, ECM Records has championed the improvised music of the Far North. Its already substantial "nordic panorama" is now further expanded with the debut album of a trio made up of three young Norwegians. Their subtle, serious, original music shows an astute awareness of the achievements of Scandinavian jazz, yet also looks beyond it. No Birch (the title alludes to a famous poem by Swedish writer Karin Boye) is quietly adventurous, proposing a nexus between what one might term the post-Feldman, quasi-subliminal impulse of specific new music directions on the one hand, and developments in free playing that could be traced back to Paul Bley's daring use of space on the other. Either tendency can bring a musician to the realization that the absence of sound can be as potent and energizing as its presence, and indeed the Wallumrød Trio is unafraid to broach the brink of silence. The internal dynamic of the band derives from the adroit balancing of its members' musical preferences. To oversimplify, Wallumrød is the band's "jazz" player, Henriksen makes free improvisation his first priority, and Kjos Sørensen's percussion colours reflect his commitment to modern composition. It is perhaps the latter's presence that most quickly establishes the trio's originality. Born in 1965, Kjos Sørensen is the group's senior member and a musician recognized as the foremost classical percussionist in Norway today. He studied in Oslo, Banff and Versailles, before taking up posts as principal percussionist with the Bergen Philharmonic, the Stavanger Symphony and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. His solo recital repertoire includes pieces by Xenakis, Stockhausen, Lachenmann, Donatoni, Volans, Denissow and many others. Kjos Sørensen has developed an improvised language to accompany modern dance together with violist Gro Løvdahl, recently demonstrated in the ballet Ploss in Oslo, and also works frequently with noted French percussionist Jean-Paul Drouet.

Numerous younger musicians, such as trumpeter Peter Asplund (b. 1969) and alto saxophonist Johan Hörlén (b. 1967) play music in the wide field of modern mainstream. Pianist Jan Lundgren (b. 1966) has collaborated with several musicians from previous generations, most notably Arne Domnérus . The main part of his wide range of activities consists of a trio with bass and drums which plays music firmly rooted in jazz tradition, while at the same time making successful explorations into material that is significantly Swedish, ranging from folklore to pop music.
Pianist Åke Johansson (b. 1937) is one of many musicians from the older generation who maintain the musical language of their younger years. He is a member of the group CBQ (Contemporary Bebop Quintet), which also includes tenor saxophonist Stefan Isaksson (b. 1956). One of the foremost soloists in this style, tenor saxophonist

The snowball effect - part 2 In this second instalment in a series of three, UK-based journalist Michael Tucker presents his Rough guide to (New) Norwegian Music. This excellent article, which was first published in respected Avant Magazine, gives the reader a comprehensive look into four decades of Norwegian jazz and contemporary music. Four of the most beautiful of all Norwegian jazz records were released in the latter half of the 1970s: the 1975 Soturnudi by the Guttorm Guttormsen Quartet, with Guttormsen (saxes), Brynjulf Blix (piano), Carl Morten Iversen (bass) and Espen Rud (drums); the 1978 Til Jorden (To the Earth), which featured poet Rolf Jacobsen reading his work to music composed by pianist Egil Kapstad, with bassist Bjørn Alterhaug and saxophonist Bjørn Johansen together with Karin Krog in the accompanying ensemble; Moments, also of 1978, which found various musicians, including ex-Jan Garbarek Group pianist Terje Bjørklund and saxophonist John Pål Inderberg in a largish ensemble (including another excellent pianist Per Husby) interpreting eleven lyrically-charged compositions by bassist Alterhaug, and the 1979 Albufeira, with alto and soprano saxophonist Guttorm Guttormsen leading a quartet with bassist Iversen again present, but with Rune Klakegg now on piano and Jørgen Næss on drums.
