There is a lot of music on this set, including the 30-minute "Oasis." This is a Live at the Village Vanguard recording by pianist Keith Jarrett and his European quartet ( Jan Garbarek on soprano and tenor, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christensen ). The pianist very much dominates the music but Garbarek 's unique floating tone on his instruments and the subtle accompaniment by Danielsson and Christensen are also noteworthy. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

We apologize for any inconvenience. The unrivaled and definitive jazz trio of today - pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Jack DeJohnette - returns to the Festival in celebration of its 20th year together. As JazzTimes has said of this trio's collaboration: "Magic, madness, talent or genius?... when you get to this level, it just doesn't matter." "Very simply, this is jazz at its finest," writes the Los Angeles Times The trio began in 1983, when Jarrett invited the other two to join him in New York for a recording session dedicated to standards. Although considered outdated material by some, Jarrett insisted: "Music wasn't about the material, but what the player brings to the material." Jarrett has remained true to his conviction to this day, all while expanding upon the Great American Songbook by reformulating conventional song forms and stretching the boundaries of free playing. Apparently, Jarrett was right-the trio has been playing to sold-out concert halls around the globe and has received several Grammy nominations, recognition from publications and awards from international governments.

Always Let Me Go: Live in Tokyo Jack DeJohnette Music from Ecm Records Release date: 15 October, 2002 The wondrous Keith Jarrett, the creator of ambient jazz with his seminal solo piano recordings in the '70s, has a meaty, mind-expanding improvisational new live trio double-CD with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette called Always Let Me Go , wherein they bat about bits of melody like cats with a mouse at great and leisurely length - angular and ruminative at the same time.

Radiance is the most recent of Keith Jarrett's solo piano recitals to make it to disc. In many respects it is unique in this venerable line of concert recordings, and it establishes again that Mr. Jarrett is one of the few truly gigantic talents in modern jazz. Keith Jarrett stands almost alone in jazz as a performer who has earned both enormous popularity and enormous respect as a jazz "purist". His popularity derives largely from what may be the most audacious act of his career choosing to give wholly improvised solo piano concerts. Mr. Jarrett claims that he approaches these concerts with no preparation, sitting down at his instrument with a blank mind and then simply letting the music flow out of him spontaneously. While all jazz musicians improvise, few take this Extreme Zen approach, and this high-wire musical mantra partly explains the spectacular popular response to Mr. Jarrett's best-selling The Koln Concert The Koln Concert (also, like all of Mr. Jarrett's work for the last 34 years, on ECM Records) is arguably one of the most important and influential jazz albums of all time at least with listeners. While few musicians have followed Mr. Jarrett's musical lead in completely improvised solo playing, music fans have found in

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, colloquially known in jazz circles merely as "the standards trio", have played together for over 20 years, and have made a career of reinterpreting the standards that represent the jazz world's bedrock, as well as by redefining the boundaries that exist between composition and improvisation (a recurring theme throughout ECM's entire roster). ECM has long stood as one of the most adventurous labels in the worlds of jazz and "new" music, and their embrace of the Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette trio's slyly subversive approach to the world of jazz standards make them a perfect fit. The Out-of-Towners was recorded on July 28th of 2001 at Munich's Nationaltheater München (State Opera House). The proverbial "out-of-towners", Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette have provided the Munich-based ECM with a startlingly adventurous tour through a handful of cherry-picked and radically reimagined favorites from the Great American Songbook. There's a lot of ground covered in this single show, as the trio's iconoclastic approach to melody helps remind modern audiences why the underrated art of pop songcraft is so very essential to any understanding of modern music. As long as pop songwriting has existed in contrast to traditional composition, the two crafts have regarded each other warily across the gaping chasm of a seemingly intractable opposition. Jarrett has spoken to this dichotomy before (this excerpt is courtesy of the artist's profile on ECM's website):

wrote (February 15, 2004):
I had the good fortune yesterday to acquire the 1989 ECM Records release of the Goldberg Variations played by Keith Jarrett, thanks to an enthusiastic reference to this recording elsewhere. I hope to post a few notes later about it. Jarrett seems to play the variations without any repeats, which I dearly appreciate. The performance itself is outstanding, in my opinion, and I doubt I will be able to find another version of this quality played on harpsichord. Any further comments on this recording is most welcome.
PS. Nice to have an expert enthusiast for Bach's solo violin works here as well. I hope to read much more discussion of these here in the future.
Donald Satz wrote (February 15, 2004):
I thnk there are a few harpsichord versions that outshine Jarrett's: Kenneth Gilbert, Scott Ross, Maggie Cole, Joseph Payne, Igor Kipnis, Wanda Landowska, Trevor Pinnock, Blandine Verlet, Gustav Leonhardt, Chirstine Jaccottet, Sergio Vartolo, Robert Hill, etc. I am glad that Jarrett recorded the work on a harpsichord instead of a piano; his smoothed lines are exacerbated by the piano. His is a nice version, but I do tire of the rounded contours, and he doesn't delve much into the emotional weight of the music when called upon.
[To Jack Botelho] Why do you prefer the GV without repeats? I know some folks who won't listen to any version not observing at least most of them, but I've not known of anyone who likes them absent.

Special CD Review: The 1970s and Pianist Keith Jarrett Expectations (Columbia Legacy, 1972, 2000) and Fort Yawuh (Impulse Records, 1973, 1999)
By Brian L. Knight
During the early 1970s, talented pianist Keith Jarrett was exploring the "New Thing" of jazz. Best known for his solo performances at the Koln Music Festival or his fusion explorations with Miles Davis, Jarrett recruited a capable band that shared a similar avant-garde musical vision. With saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian, Jarrett deviated from the hard bop and fusion that he was playing in the late 1960s and decided to let things go free. Two albums that displayed this phase of Jarrett’s career are Expectations (1972) and Fort Yawuh Expectations was recorded in the studio in 1972 and Fort Yawuh For the Expectations Exile on Main Street
