Album Of Solo Improvisa- Tions. REVIEW Mojo (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[O]ne emerges once again from the Jarrett experience quietly changed." Down Beat (p.63) - "PART 5 is particularly exciting, featuring Jarrett's dazzling two-hand tandem whorls and eddies..." JazzTimes (p.94) - "Jarrett launches onto three-note cells or rhythmic snaps during the longer pieces to propel him on journeys from one section into an unknown that coalesces into something new, measured and gripping at once." CUSTOMER REVIEWS Average Rating: 5 stars out of 5 (1 reviews submitted) Bliss for Jarrett fans Keith Jarrett respects his fan base enough to challenge them, and he never does it in a half-hearted or messy way. It's hard to imagine any Jarrett fan not being won over by Radiance's dynamic, atonal experimentation leading to pockets of familiar warmth, which are all the more sweet because they're surrounded by a fresh spirit. Similar to Jarrett's strangely neglected record, Dark Intervals, the short improvised pieces on Radiance veer from headlong rushes into barely thought-out ideas (not so much beautiful as thrilling) to lucid melodies that tap into Jarrett's deep knowledge of standard ballads and elegaic classical motifs. For serious music lovers, this record is over two hours of unfiltered, unpackaged bliss, another in a series of Jarrett albums that seem to mine the very source of music, but unique enough to make us feel that a new path to the source has been cleared.

An Hour with Keith Jarrett
Produced and Hosted by Sara Fishko
Sunday, May 8, 2005
Keith Jarrett Airs Sunday, May 8 at 6PM on 93.9 FM
In "An Hour with Keith Jarrett," WNYC examines the remarkable work and career of American pianist and composer Keith Jarrett. Produced and hosted by WNYC culture attaché and The Fishko Files host Sara Fishko, the hour-long special features an exclusive interview recorded at Mr. Jarrett's home in New Jersey. The show originally aired on June 6-8, 2003.
During the interview, the often media-shy Jarrett discussed the process involved in music-making, and elaborated on what he thinks and feels when he's improvising. Over the past 37 years, Keith Jarrett has come to be recognized as one of the most creative and uncompromising musicians of our time - collectively as a brilliant improviser; a master of jazz and classical piano; and as a multifaceted composer.

KEITH JARRETT
Fort Yawuh
Fort Yawuh is one of the group's best efforts, a series of live performances that demonstrate the many different aspects of the group. "(If the)Misfits(Wear It)," the album opener, is boppish and recalls Ornette Coleman, though you can hear traces of the gospel influence that Jarrett brought to bear on the European quartet recordings. Redman offers a lexicon of avant-garde tenor sounds, his cries and shrieks sounding less noisy and more evocative of the human voice today than they may have come across at the time. "Fort Yawuh" is a lyrical piece on which Redman plays with incredible beauty. Certainly he should be recognized as one of the best post-Coltrane tenor players to come along.

  • Keith Jarrett A giant of jazz innovation finds himself reaching new heights by deftly interpreting classic tunes. By David Rubien Jazz artists who came of age in the '50s, '60s or early '70s tend to place a premium on originality. These were years of rapid evolution, and players wanted to do their part to advance the music. So when, in their waning years, musicians from this era resort to playing tunes out of the standard repertory, it's generally a sign of spiritual exhaustion like when a movie actor lands a sitcom. It's interesting, then, that pianist Keith Jarrett one of the more unusual talents in the past 35 years of the music now finds himself in his most creative phase playing almost nothing but classics. Since forming in 1983, his trio with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock has staked a claim as the preeminent jazz group interpreting standards; it's probably the closest a piano trio has come to the Olympian heights of the late Bill Evans' trios. At the piano, Jarrett, 55, has an improvisational zeal matched by a technique that is equal parts meditation and explosion. He is one of the few living jazz pianists with an instantly recognizable sound.

    JAZZ PIANIST
    July 19, 2005
Jeffrey Brown sits down with acclaimed jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, who will play his first solo concert in North America since 1995 at Carnegie Hall in September.
JEFFREY BROWN: When Keith Jarrett takes the stage for one of his solo concerts, it's just him, his piano, and a world of possibilities. Nothing is written down; everything is improvised. Now 60, Jarrett has long been recognized as one of the foremost pianists around, primarily as a jazz musician, but also through several acclaimed classical recordings as well. As a child growing up in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in fact, he was trained in classical piano. He switched to jazz in his teens, and began to make a name for himself playing with Charles Lloyd and others in the late 1960s , and then with Miles Davis's Electric Fusion Group. For the past two decades, he's headed a trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette that some critics are saying is one of the best in jazz history. But it's for his solo work that Jarrett is perhaps best known, concert-length performances, where an individual piece can last for minutes or an hour. Beginning in the early '70s, he's released numerous recordings of these performances. One, the 1975 "Koln Concert," is one of the best-selling piano recordings in history. His newest release, called "Radiance," was recorded and videotaped in Japan. Keith Jarrett leads a very private life in rural New Jersey.

Jack DeJohnette Wed, Mar 9, 8 pm Venue: Zellerbach Hall Price: Subscription Series: Choose-Your-Own Subscription As one of the most profoundly creative musicians of our time, jazz pianist Keith Jarrett is in a class all his own. One of the first musicians to perform improvised music at such major music centers as La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, Jarrett has redefined the role of the piano in contemporary music and his seminal Koln Concert recording is the best-selling piano album in history. A fearless innovator, Jarrett has explored a broad spectrum of musical idioms and languages, from the electric jazz-fusion he played as a member of Miles Davis' early-'70s group to his acclaimed forays into the classical and Baroque repertoire. In 2003, Jarrett celebrated the 20th anniversary of his award-winning collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, a trio with near-telepathic sensitivity to each other's playing. They have been hailed as one of the finest trios in jazz history, "a distillation of an astonishing amount of talent, will, and sheer creativity," says the Los Angeles Times Patron Information Program Notes: Program notes are available online

Music Review: The Melody At Night, With You by Keith Jarrett (ECM 1675)
Piano variations from the American songbook
By Philip Sprake 30 March 2000 Use this version to print In contemporary jazz it is sometimes difficult, at least for novices, to recognise the difference between a technically proficient musician and a truly great one. The Melody At Night, With You , a collection of rich piano solos released on CD late last year by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, is an unambiguous demonstration of great jazz musicianship and further proof that he is one of the more significant jazz pianists to emerge since the 1960s. The album, which was recorded in 1997 when Jarrett was fighting a protracted battle with the debilitating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), has none of the extraordinary technical wizardry characteristic of his early career. And while the effects of CFS may explain the occasional melancholic tone on some tracks, the CD demonstrates Jarrett's complete mastery of the instrument, reaching emotional depths rarely achieved by most contemporary jazz pianists.
