Piano Concerto No. 3
Byron Janis (piano)
Boston Symphony Orchestra/Charles Munch Rec. December 1958, Boston BMG RCA RED SEAL 82876 55269-2 These two oft-recorded concertos make a strong pairing, given that any pianist-orchestra combination with the artistic wherewithal to tackle them is practically bound to have significant things to say. So it proves here, not least because the ‘historical’ performance from Byron Janis and the Boston Symphony Orchestra sounds so well in this recent transfer. At the time of the performance Janis was still a young man, not yet thirty, and Munch was one of the world’s top conductors. Their recording of this great concerto proved another highlight in a distinguished and enduring discography, recorded in the glowing acoustic of Symphony Hall.

(Prices subject to change) Reviews: start discussion Reviews: 3 Review by thepilot September 23, 2004 (2 of 2 found this review helpful) Performance: Sonics: Another fantastic Mercury SACD with a sound quality to rival the very best of today's original DSD multichannel recordings and great performances to love and to cherish. Highly recommended.
Was this review helpful to you? Review by gonzostick October 23, 2004 (3 of 3 found this review helpful) Performance: Sonics: Incredible Disc!!!! Much better than the Rostropovich/Pletnev in the 3rd Concerto. Sound is outstanding! Performance markdown only due to disfiguring cut in last movement of 3rd. I heard Janis perform BOTH of these LIVE! This is the only way to hear that! Incredible pianist! Thrilling performances of BOTH!!! Run, don't walk, and get this!

About The World Piano Competition

Since 1956, the mission of The World Piano Competition Program has been to provide a continuum of services and role models to assist youth in need. Most of the young people we serve experience economical hardship and have never been exposed to emotion that is positive, constructive, and a source for growth. Central to their lives are their concerns about violence, incivility, hunger, and homelessness.
Our task is to provide a venue of excitement and compassion for them to do our best to prepare them for the enormous challenge they face as they approach adulthood.
Performances organized in 7 divisions featured 248 events for the past season.
The World Piano Competition : Annually The World Piano Competition serves approximately 750 children. Following Regional Evaluations of more than 550 applicants representing 35 countries The 46th World Piano Competition invited almost 150 contestants representing 18 countries to perform at the World Headquarters at the Aronoff Center For The Arts in Cincinnati. An international jury of 7 judges representing 6 countries awarded cash prizes and performance opportunities.
The Bach-Beethoven-Brahms Club (BBB) Educational Outreach Program : More than 1200 Tri-State students representing 50 schools from the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Hamilton County area have attended the educational outreach programs featuring the gold, silver, and bronze winners representing Greece, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Tri-State school music groups and piano students joined the international artists in solo and ensemble performances.
