Franz Liszt: The ultimate Romantic 1811-1886
The stadium crowd is restless, and begins to chant the name of the superstar musician with whom they've come to howl. A spotlight cuts its way onto the dark stage, and, the crowd roaring, into the light bounds the glitzily dressed superstar - Franz Liszt. Ken Russell's intentionally tasteless 1975 film ``Lisztomania' outraged film critics and music lovers, but it did serve a useful purpose. The movie observed Liszt, the 19th century's most popular, virtuosic and daring pianist-composer, in terms of a 20th-century rock star. It may have been a rotten film, but it recognized that Liszt, the ultimate Romantic artist, was a man who would have fit comfortably into our own era. Lisztomania was the term actually used in the 1840s to describe the public idolatry of this phenomenal pianist. In the early 1820s he had begun touring Europe as a child prodigy. Later, unlike Mozart, he was able to parlay his adolescent popularity into a wildly successful adult career. In 1848 he became the music director at the ducal court in Weimar, where he served for 12 years. Liszt turned Weimar into a center for contemporary music, leading the local orchestra and opera troupe in many premieres of his own and other composers' works, especially those of Wagner and Berlioz. He also championed the music of dead composers, particularly Beethoven. This was also the period of his most intense composition.

James is fond of dogs, and has a golden labrador named Otis (after Mr. Redding) which he adopted soon after his marriage. He studied at the USC School of Music and with Leon Fleischer and Reginald Stewart at Santa Barbara's Music Academy of the West. He developed a strong affinity for the string orchestra. However, despite his love for the classical repertoire, James was inevitably drawn to pop music. In the early 70's a stint with an L.A. based band, "Mama Lion" was followed by 2 solo albums - JNH (1974) and James Newton Howard and friends in 1984. The latter was "commissioned by Yamaha to demo its new synths"

The performance will take place in the PAS Museum's east courtyard. Thomas Labé is an associate professor in the Department of Music and Theater at Cameron University. He enjoys an international career as a soloist, recording artist and scholar. His 1987 debut at New York's Carnegie Hall (as First Prize winner of the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition) was hailed by The New York Times as "the most interesting among the week's debutantes." He has also been praised by the same publication for "moments of great beauty between thunderous outbursts." A subsequent New York appearance caused The New York Post to run the headline "A Pianist of Virtuoso Caliber" over an exuberant review.

Finale: Presto Last-minute replacement misses the mark by S. James Wegg The untimely death of the scheduled pianist Ronald Smith in late May threw the organizers of the Singapore International Piano Festival into an urgent search for a replacement, who, at very short notice, could cobble together a recital in the spirit of this year’s theme “Legends of the Piano,” and also complement the programs of the other three performers. Leslie Howard took up this formidable task with mixed results: the works selected particularly the inclusion of the Smith-championed Symphony for Piano Solo were an entirely appropriate tribute to the late master; unfortunately, a few more weeks of preparation might have allowed for a more secure presentation of this magnificent repertoire. John Alaimo
After studying piano privately at a very young age, John began playing professionally while still in his early teens. He attended Boston University, Berklee College of music and the Boston Conservatory of Music where he studied composition, arranging and education. After working as producer, composer and arranger at Boston based “World Star Productions” he moved to Los Angeles where he continued his music career working as a composer, arranger and teacher.
John’s love of piano music resurfaced after studying with the great jazz artist Hampton Hawes. Coming back to the East Coast he played piano in the house band of the 1369 Jazz Club during it’s tenure as the premier jazz venue in the Cambridge-Boston area.
Currently residing on Martha’s Vineyard, he is an integral part of the music scene where he has performed for President Clinton and numerous celebrities. John has been featured in concerts at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center, the Old Whaling Church, the Union Chapel and as Billie Holiday’s pianist in the play “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” which had a critically acclaimed month-long run at the Vineyard Playhouse.
John can be seen playing at Atria, Alchemy, Park Corner Bistro, Farm Neck Café’ and at many private functions.

Liszt: Concerto No 1 in E flat major S124 - Allegretto vivace - Allegro marziale animato
This set and its companion ( ) are perhaps the most important releases in Leslie Howard's complete survey of Liszt's piano music. In addition to such well known works as the mature Piano Concertos (two of the most popular works in the nineteenth-century Romantic repertoire) and the other lesser known but familiar pieces, several items here receive their first recordings; as a result of Leslie Howard's indefatigable research we can now hear orchestral versions of Hexaméron and the Grand Solo de concert for the first time. Also in new versions are the recently discovered Concerto in E flat, Op posth, and De Profundis. A re-examination of the manuscripts has led our pianist to make refinements to the published scores which provide a more accurate reflection of Liszt's intentions. All these issues and more are documented in Leslie Howard's characteristically thorough notes. Recorded in the Budapest Studios of Hungarian Radio on 6-11 November 1997 and 24 June - 1 July 1998

Gershwin: Promenade
This fascinating recital takes us on a tour of some of the less-frequented byways of the piano world, and into a repertoire all too often missing from our concert halls as modern performers and promoters eschew the ‘frivolity’ of such works. Yet these are the very pieces which were the meat and drink of the grand masters of previous centuries. Whereas a pianist such as Rachmaninov would construct a programme like a well-planned banquet, with concern for balance, variety, size and general digestibility, most modern programmes are awesome by comparison and, though shorter than the old-style recital, often seem longer. Greeted by the BBC on its original release a quarter of a century ago as ‘a delightful collection, beautifully played’, for this reissue of Rare Piano Encores Leslie Howard has taken advantage of the greater playing time of a CD – the original was of course on vinyl – to add two of his own compositions by way of a bonus and with thanks to kind listeners. Yuletide Pastoral was composed in response to a commission from Gramophone magazine for its Christmas number in 1997, whereas Réminiscences de l’opéra ‘La Wally’ de Catalani, firmly in the spirit of Liszt, is an old-fashioned operatic fantasy, based for the most part upon the famous aria Ebben’ ne andrò lontano – a melody recently made even more popular by its essential part in the plot of the magnificent film Diva. Recorded on 24, 25 October 1981 and (16,17) 1 May 2002
