TITANIC OPERATIC LIZST An interesting unpublished version of Meyerbeer's 'Les Huguenots' is even more enticing and contains a better arrangement than the previous versions, something which is espoused in Howard's scholarly notes. Another 'extra' version of Bellini's 'La Sonnambula' appears here and one can only marvel at the height of Lizst's inspiration and capability in making such music sound so utterly pianistic. There is also Russian charm and a sense of joie de vivre in the 'Russlan' transcription. The 'Valse et Caprice' contains elements of Lizst's better style, all fused into such a charming whole that I was almost singing the tunes after a few repeated listens. Howard's marvelous playing adds to the excitement and virility of the piece. This brings us to the inimitable arrangement of Wagner's 'Tannhauser' Overture. It is quite amazing to realize how such a vividly orchestral work can sound so incredibly beautiful in a pianistic guise. Howard's slow tempo adds to to the grandeur and nobility of the piece, thus creating an unforgettable sensation in the middle of the Pilgrim's Chorus theme and the headlong rush into the final chords. After such fireworks, the somewhat overlong and occasionally boorish melodies of 'I Puritani' may seem to sound cheap by comparison but repeated listening will make one appreciate this titanic music much more. At times it seems that these arrangements rather grow on you!

Hyperion's magnificent and truly laudable Lisztcycle approaches the finishing line with this mammoth treasure trove of hidden delights that will enthuse all lovers of the piano. Indeed Leslie Howard waxes lyrical about most of the pieces in his scholarly notes, so if he is eager then why shouldn't we be so too? The Grande Fantasie that heralds the first disc is truly titanic, here Lisztmatches Paganini in his wizardry and it would be idiotic not to say that Howard's performance is masterly in every respect. The short Waltzes and Polonaise are also brilliantly done although one must admit that most of these shorter works are rather trivial. However the 2 nd Legend entitled, 'St Francis de Paule walks on water' is indeed pianistic impressionism at it's finest and contains much that is memorable and hauntingly beautiful. Other works which left a profound impression on me and that emanated from the first disc where the short but thoroughly charming 'Wallenstein's Lake' and the poetically haunting; 'The Cypresses of the Ville d'Este', an intoxicating tone poem of miraculous beauty. The short Variations on Paganini's Carnival in Venice' are also vintage Lisztwith devilish double-stops and glissandos, more than a match for Howard's scintillating virtuosity.

    Serge Diaghilev
Franz Liszt IN the early part of the 20th century, Paris was a melting pot of artistic talent from all over the world.
Artists mingled with musicians, composers with choreographers and at the heart was the Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev.
With his famed company, the Ballets Russes, Diaghilev brought together groups of artists to create startling work.
The Royal Ballet is celebrating his legacy with a series of performances of some of his productions over the next fortnight.
Artist Leon Bakst designed Le Spectre de la Rose, while the celebrated dancer Mikhail Fokine did the choreography.
Nijinsky had previously worked alongside Stravinsky on the controversial The Rite of Spring, which had caused a riot on its opening night in 1913.
This short season looks likely to just whet the appetite for further Ballets Russes inspired performances. as The Rite of Spring is to be performed in Spring 2005.

A pianist known across five continents and with 130 CDs to his name is to return to Leicester to give a recital at the University of Leicester on Saturday 26 October 2002 at 7.30 pm. Australian-born Leslie Howard will perform opera highlights transcribed for the piano by Liszt – a composer on whom he is an acknowledged world authority. Music will include Verdi’s Don Carlos, Aida, and Simon Boccanegra, Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable, Wagner’s Rienzi and Das Rheingold, Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette and Bellini’s Norma. Although the tunes are not by Liszt these piano works are very much his own. Acclaimed by the Leicester Mercury in 2001 as, “A virtuoso with a fine technique and the capacity to make difficult pieces look effortless,” Leslie Howard has completed the largest recording project ever undertaken by any solo artist, having recorded Liszt’s complete piano works with Hyperion over 15 years. For this he has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque on six occasions. “Leslie Howard has appeared with many of the world’s best-known conductors and orchestras, and claims to have the largest repertoire of any pianist who ever lived.

    Gavin Bryars Ensemble
During the 1970's I worked in composer/performer ensembles with composer friends such as John White, Dave Smith and Christopher Hobbs. We played each others' music, writing for each other as performers and accepting the frequent oddity of the ensuing instrumentation. The ethos was one of mutual respect, musical trust and an ability to understand forms of musical shorthand.
The first time that we gave a concert entirely of my work was at the 1979 Festival d'Automne in Paris, in the Chapelle de la Sorbonne when I augmented the group with 3 of my students to perform pieces such as The Sinking of the Titanic In 1981 John White and I put together a combined ensemble for a Regional Arts Contemporary Music Network tour which featured, more or less equally, works by each of us, played by a group which included many of the formidable musicians performing John's music for Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman at the National Theatre.
When I started my own ensemble I worked on the principle that pervaded our early work - that first and foremost the ensemble should comprise musicians with whom I wanted to work rather than players who were there simply because I needed certain instruments. For this reason the ensemble has often had an unusual line-up. In 1986, for example, there were 6 players: violin, clarinet, piano, 2 percussion, bass, with the last four all playing percussion and one of the percussionists also playing recorder.
My current ensemble is much larger, between 6 and 12 people according to repertoire, but all are versatile musicians being essentially chamber music players who are also exceptional individual soloists. The ensemble has changed over the years, and many fine players have either been members of the ensemble or have performed with it on specific occasions. My closest musical colleague Dave Smith has been with me longest, and we worked together even before my ensemble came into being. The only time that I have performed in New York, for example, was when Dave and I gave two curious duo-piano concerts at The Kitchen in 1978. He was also in the group which played in Paris in 1979 though, because of the need to cover university teaching for myself and John White, he did not tour in the 1981 band.
