Leslie Howard
"a virtuoso in the true Romantic style with its emphasis on musicality as much as bravura"
The Guardian
Renowned concert pianist Leslie Howard has given recitals and concerto performances all over the world. His repertoire embraces the whole gamut of the piano literature from the time of the instrument's inception to the music of the present day. As a soloist, and in chamber music and song, Howard is a familiar figure at numerous international festivals. With a vast array of more than 80 concertos, he has played with many of the world's great orchestras, working with many distinguished conductors. Leslie Howard was born in Australia, educated there, in Italy and in England, and has made his home in London for more than thirty years.
Howard's gramophone recordings include music by Franck, Glazunov, Grainger, Grieg, Granados, Rakhmaninov, Rubinstein, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and, most important of all, Liszt. For fourteen years he was engaged on the largest recording project ever undertaken by a solo musician: the complete piano music of Ferenc Liszt - a project which was completed in a total of 95 compact discs on the Hyperion label. The publication of the series was completed in the autumn of 1999. The importance of the Liszt project cannot be overemphasized: it encompasses world première recordings, including much music prepared by Dr Howard from Liszt's still unpublished manuscripts, and works unheard since Liszt's lifetime. Leslie Howard has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque on five occasions, and a further Special Grand Prix du Disque was awarded upon the completion of the Liszt series. Other Hyperion releases include the Tchaikovsky Sonatas; two double CDs of music by Anton Rubinstein; two double CDs containing - for the first time - all seventeen of Liszt's works for piano and orchestra, with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and Karl Anton Rickenbacher, and a double CD, The Essential Liszt, presenting highlights from the series. In 2002, a recording of New Liszt Discoveries was released, and a further CD was released in 2004 - the research is never-ending! Recent releases include the re-issue of the acclaimed Rare Piano Encores on Hyperion's second label Helios - including

Dimension are the 2005 winners of the prestigious Parkhouse Award. The finals took place in the Wigmore Hall on Thursday 7 April before a very distinguished panel of adjudicators: Ian Horsbrugh (Chairman); Iain Burnside; Paul Kildea; Martin Lovett OBE; Simon Rowland-Jones and Natalie Wheen.
Dimension performed works by Mendelssohn and Shostakovich without music and received the audience vote as well.
The Parkhouse Award is a biennial competition for piano-based string ensembles. The Award was founded in 1990 by friends and colleagues of David Parkhouse to perpetuate his memory and the outstanding contribution he made to the performance of chamber music in Britain and abroad. It is essentially a practical prize for outstanding young musicians. The winning ensemble is given the opportunity to launch its career in the most positive way possible, with three concerts which for Dimension will be:

Annual re-engagements on 5 continents and a 130-CD discography attest to the burgeoning popularity of pianist Leslie Howard. A resident of London since 1972, Australian-born Howard recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his London debut with an internationally telecast award ceremony at Buckingham Palace: Queen Elizabeth II awarded the Member in the Order of Australia [AM] to Leslie Howard "for service to the Arts as Piano Soloist, Composer, Musicologist, and Mentor to young musicians." The event was followed by 25 concerto performances Beethoven 5, Liszt 2, Brahms 2, Rachmaninoff 3 and Dvorak - throughout Europe. Howard performs worldwide with renowned conductors and orchestras in the world's most prestigious venues, featuring a repertoire of over 100 concerti. Commanding the largest repertoire of any pianist who ever lived - and the largest discography of any pianist in recording history Leslie Howard has justly earned his reputation as a pianist without peer on the international concert scene. No major pianist performing today can offer the unique recital programs that have made Howard a celebrated artist in 40 countries. Howard is also in great demand at prestigious international music festivals, where his co-performers in chamber music and lieder include the world's most renowned artists. In 1986, Howard embarked on the largest recording project ever undertaken by a solo pianist: the entire solo piano music of Liszt completed on 95 CDs within 14 years for the Hyperion label. Howard's recordings also appear on the Deutsche Grammophon, EMI Classics, Nimbus, Cala, Pearl, ABC Eloquence, Musical Heritage Society and Merlin Classics labels. Entered into the Guinness Book of World Records, Howard's Liszt series won 5 Grands Prix du Disque, with a Special Grand Prix du Disque awarded upon completion of the Liszt series. He holds numerous international awards for his dedication to Liszt's music; the Hungarian Government honored Dr. Howard in 2000 with the Pro Cultura Hungarica Award at a special ceremony in Budapest, and in Lebanon in 2004 the Hungarian President presented him with the Medal of St. Stephen. Since 1988, Leslie Howard has served as President of the Liszt Society.

OVERALL NOISE RATING: 3 (After 20 years of the "Courtesy Campaign", I have to admit, people still have to be reminded that it is a Concert Mortal Sin to leave before the final encore - please put sufficient parking coupons for your cars the next time...) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. Johann D'Souza Some people might not know this but the pianist Leslie Howard (left) has had a full list (pardon the pun) of things to do in the last 15 years. He has literally lived the life of Liszt, writing, researching, playing, recording (OK, maybe Liszt couldn't do this) and championing his music. I was told that for every CD he has recorded he has personally done the research for the material in the album sleeves. (There are about 94 discs worth on Hyperion - click here for Hyperion's Liszt Index ). The good news is that after the project (expected to end in the year 2000) he is going to combine all the material into a book (publishers please reserve a copy for me).

Fittingly, it was the Alkan that turned out the best in this program of super-virtuosity. I had the pleasure of hearing Leslie Howard, in concert in this same piano festival several years ago (a quick check shows that five long (right : the late Mr Ronald Smith)
The Beethoven variations that opened the evening was notable for a cultured, elegant touch that also informed in the two Liszt works. In the Beethoven the inherent humor and that colossal imagination came through, though delivered in a dead-pan style. In the Liszt, the quibbles that I had in the concert mentioned above were sadly replicated. The Scherzo and March is not played often due to its immense difficulty; what makes it sad is that such a phenomenal technique was not put to better use. The Weinen, Klagen variations can be full of pathos, but Mr Howard seemed intent of just delivering the notes.
