    Encyclopedia: Vladimir Horowitz
Updated 20 days 4 hours 43 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Vladimir Horowitz Vladimir Horowitz ru October 1 November 5 ) was a classical pianist . His use of colors, technique and the excitement of his playing are thought by many to be unrivalled, and his performances of works as diverse as those of Domenico Scarlatti and Alexander Scriabin were equally legendary. Detractors are quick to point out that his output is uniformly "Horowitzian" and sometimes mannered, and often too much so to be true to the composer's intentions. Even so, he has a huge and passionate following and is widely considered by many to be the very greatest pianist of the 20th Century. October 1 is the 274th day of the year (275th in Leap years). ...

    Horowitz Live And Unedited
review by Ed Vincent This is a beautiful performance by one of the world's
masters of the piano. At times each note is a poem
in itself as the gifted hands of the late Maestro Horowitz
entertains the audience on all levels of art. This
release is from a 1965 Return Concert to Carnegie Hall.
The quality of the recording is incredible, as is the work itself. Listening to the album makes one feel the intensity of the talent that this gentleman had. Like a desert palm waiting for the moisture of life I can imagine each key and cord on the piano of Vladimir Horowitz waiting to be played. This is a great recording and is just in time for the Holiday season. Praise for Anthony de Mare:
"Mr. de Mare's protean talents fit his protean program...the Ives's was played as eloquently as I have ever heard it with warm, if troubled nostalgia." - The New York Times "Mr. De Mare is an amazing artist, and must be doing for contemporary piano literature what the Kronos Quartet has done for the contemporary string quartet. He is sure-fingered and dextrous, and puts his whole soul into his work. The results are remarkable." - UW Gazette , Toronto Praise for Steven Mayer: "...piano playing at its most awesome..." - Bernard Holland, The New York Times "The piano was 'smoking' with overt displays of pyrotechnics. Mayer's playing brought sheer delight to his mesmerized crowdleaving attending pianists weeping by the wayside." - Jeff Manookian, The Salt Lake Tribune Praise for Anthony de Mare's Wizards and Wild Men CD: "This is the most illuminating and powerful CRI release I have heard in a very long time...and important as well as exciting release." - American Record Guide "...an audacious disk...de Mare, playing at the keyboard, strumming the strings, and even signing along, plumbs the lustrous beauty lurking in the challenging scores." -

    Horowitz Trivia
Hank Drake surprised me a late evening in the fall of 2002 by sending a terrific collection of Horowitz trivia he had compiled for the site. I read it through, took a deep bow, and published it just as it was right away. Rather than an awkwardly written biography, it should be considered as something of a Horowitz dictionary were one can turn for quick information regarding Horowitz's life. Also of interest may be a complete list of Horowitz's awards during the years, which is published at the bottom of the page. Vladimir Horowitz (1904-1989)
The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz plays Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3
Airing on CLASSICA on June 24, 1997
In 1928 Vladimir Horowitz came to the United States and made his U.S. debut in New York, where he became friends with Sergei Rachmaninov. A few weeks later, the two artists got together to play Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 - with Horowitz as the soloist and Rachmaninov as the "orchestra" at a second piano. Fifty years later, Horowitz performed this work once again in New York, but this time accompanied by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. Classica presents the live recording of this celebrated event at which Horowitz, who had played the work with its creator and knew it like no other, performed the concerto for the very last time. Born in Kiev (Ukraine) in 1904, Vladimir Horowitz was one of the most acclaimed pianists of the 20th century. His phenomenal virtuosity, his willful interpretative style and his delight in publicity turned him into a world-class star who was known far beyond the confines of classical music. He died in New York on November 5, 1989. Sergei Rachmaninov visited the United States for the first time in the fall of 1909. For his lengthy concert tour, he had brought the recently completed Third Piano Concerto with him. The nearly three-quarter-hour long work stands out for its enormous technical demands as well as for its intricate structural design, which links the three movements together cyclically through the use of the same thematic material. The Third Piano Concerto is a standard work in the repertoire of virtuoso concert pianists and shows the composer, who is sometimes unfairly called old-fashioned, as fully in tune with his time.

Lang Lang (born 1982) Yes, his name sounds like it might be well suited to a Panda bear, but pianist Lang Lang is considered to be one of the greatest young musicians in the world. He's been performing in public ever since he was five years old, winning a competition playing the works of Chopin and Liszt. Lang Lang was born in Shenyang, the fifth largest city in China. At the age of 15, he moved to the United States to study at Philadelphia's Curtis School of Music. PBS's "In My Life" website asked Lang Lang who his heroes are: "Musically, it was Vladimir Horowitz, who was the greatest pianist of the last century, and also another pianist, Arthur Rubinstein. My personal role model was Michael Jordan. And then when I came to America, it was Tiger Woods, too. Both Jordan and Woods have such great discipline and they’re not only athletes, they’re artists. It’s amazing to watch them play because they’re both so natural, dedicated, and talented." How did he get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, he told PBS: "I woke up every day at 5:00 am to practice piano for an hour. Then I went to school until 3:00 pm, came home, practiced piano some more, and then did homework in the evening. I practiced piano five hours a day!"
