By Susanne Rockwell Credit is also due Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, who in 1994 saw that the campus was finally ready to step forward and make a commitment to building a top-flight facility specifically for the performing arts. "For decades, UC Davis has had a fine reputation in the sciences," he points out. "Although the arts have always been important to us, we’ve never had the high-quality performing arts center that defines the best public universities. Now, after eight years of preparation, this jewel of a facility is ready to be showcased as a powerful symbol of how seriously we are committed to the arts." The earliest days "We feel strongly that music and dance are integral components in the fabric of society. They express the spiritual side of existence," explains tribal chair Paula Lorenzo. "In music and in dance, we all speak the same language." A tradition of wine, food and the arts When the University Farm opened its doors in 1908 as a branch of the University of California, Berkeley, the focus was on the practical matter of teaching high-school students and recent graduates the rudiments of scientific farming. The first "practical short course" in horticulture and viticulture (similar to a Cooperative Extension course these days) was offered during the farm’s first year, along with courses on poultry husbandry, animal science, crop growing and dairy manufacturing.

2005/2006 marks the 50th anniversary of Lorin Hollander’s Carnegie Hall debut at the age of eleven, the beginning of his continuous professional career spanning five decades. He was an infant child prodigy who composed music at age three and performed the Well-Tempered Clavier of Bach at five. He has performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world and is a veteran of over 2,500 performances: with orchestra, in recital, lecture/recital, chamber ensemble as pianist, and as symphony and choral conductor. He has collaborated with Bernstein, Mehta, Ozawa, Monteux, Szell, Leinsdorf, Slatkin, Previn, Schwarz, Hamlisch, Levine, Tilson-Thomas, Haitink, and Ormandy among many others. He had his own national recital series on PBS and performed in the soundtrack of the movie Sophie's Choice In December 2003, Lorin Hollander received the "Music Has Power" award from Oliver Sacks' Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (of which he is a founding board member). The award honors his dedication to advancing the understanding of musical giftedness and mentorship, his support of learning and development through music, and for his advocacy of music in education and healing. Serving as consultant, he created the prototypes for the original outreach programs of the National Endowment of the Arts, American Symphony Orchestra League, MENC, International Federation of Music Therapy, the US Department of Education, among others. Hollander was advisor to the 1984 Winter Olympics, and in 1981 was the National Chairman of Young Audiences. He served on the Rockefeller Panel:

About The World Piano Competition

Since 1956, the mission of The World Piano Competition Program has been to provide a continuum of services and role models to assist youth in need. Most of the young people we serve experience economical hardship and have never been exposed to emotion that is positive, constructive, and a source for growth. Central to their lives are their concerns about violence, incivility, hunger, and homelessness.
Our task is to provide a venue of excitement and compassion for them to do our best to prepare them for the enormous challenge they face as they approach adulthood.
Performances organized in 7 divisions featured 248 events for the past season.
The World Piano Competition : Annually The World Piano Competition serves approximately 750 children. Following Regional Evaluations of more than 550 applicants representing 35 countries The 46th World Piano Competition invited almost 150 contestants representing 18 countries to perform at the World Headquarters at the Aronoff Center For The Arts in Cincinnati. An international jury of 7 judges representing 6 countries awarded cash prizes and performance opportunities.
The Bach-Beethoven-Brahms Club (BBB) Educational Outreach Program : More than 1200 Tri-State students representing 50 schools from the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Hamilton County area have attended the educational outreach programs featuring the gold, silver, and bronze winners representing Greece, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Tri-State school music groups and piano students joined the international artists in solo and ensemble performances.

A Brief History
In 1932, four Poughkeepsie string playersGeorge Hagstrom, the orchestra's first conductor, Sydney Fleishman, Charles T. Miller and Dr. Charles Hoffman, all local businessmen, formed a nucleus of serious local musicians who would eventually become the Dutchess County Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra attracted amateurs and professionals alike plus a large number of students from surrounding high schools. Eventually, with the backing of local financial support, the orchestra began to perform its first public concerts in 1934. By the 1940s, the orchestra had grown to 93 musicians. The programs were largely classical, but some included contemporary works, some by local composers.
In 1945, George Hagstrom stepped down as music director handing the baton over to Ole Windingstad, a European-trained conductor who came from the Bergen Symphony in Norway and the New Orleans Symphony. On October 29, 1953 under the direction of Maestro Windingstad, the orchestra presented a program of two Norwegian composers, Greig and Sparre-Olsen at New York's Carnegie Hall. It was also during Maestro Windingstad's tenure that the orchestra presented Prokofiev's

The PSQ waxes Romantic
By J. Mark Scearce
The Portland String Quartet play at State Street Church, in Portland, Dec. 9. Pre-concert lecture by the PSQ and program annotator Will Hertz at 2 p.m., concert at 3 p.m. Call (207) 761-1522. Tickets are free if you’re under 21. CZECH-ING THE WRONG BOXES: Portland String Quartet get romantic. When The Portland String Quartet present the second in their series of small-m “masterpieces” Sunday afternoon at State Street Church, it will be as close to a Czech-Fest as Portland ever hopes to get — minus the best Czech, Janacek. Highlighting, last time at bat, what they termed “Masterpieces of the Rococo: A Celebration of Music’s Most Joyful Era” — kinda takes the joy right out of it — the PSQ trifled with some incidental Haydn and Mozart before tackling more substantial Boccherini. Future installments in the series promise a true blue Classical endeavor, as well as a most promising early 20th century tribute. This second concert, Sunday, featuring “Masterpieces of the Romantic” era, is not only out of historical sequence, but begs the inclusion of Czechs Smetana and Dvorak, with the lone Wolf Hugo, as standard-bearers of the period.

Major Figures in American Music
Major Figures in American Music is the core unit of Oral History American Music. It consists of approximately 300 interviews with composers, performers, and other significant musicians. The first subjects were those most fragile in terms of age and health, such as Eubie Blake, Nadia Boulanger, Aaron Copland, Harry Partch, Charles Seeger, Claire Reis, and Virgil Thomson. Among other senior composers interviewed during the OHAM's first decade were John Cage, Lou Harrison, Ernst Krenek, Leo Ornstein, and William Schuman. As OHAM proceeded, composers actively involved in their careers were included and have been updated periodically. To name a few: John Adams, David Del Tredici, Lukas Foss, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Ned Rorem, Billy Taylor, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Oham's program also includes oral histories with emerging young talents, with the plan to track their careers as they unfold in the future. In addition to interviews with primary subjects, the core unit includes testimonies from secondary sources about George Gershwin, Harry Lawrence Freeman, Percy Grainger, and Arnold Schoenberg.
