2005/2006 marks the 50th anniversary of Lorin Hollander’s Carnegie Hall debut at the age of eleven, the beginning of his continuous professional career spanning five decades. He was an infant child prodigy who composed music at age three and performed the Well-Tempered Clavier of Bach at five. He has performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world and is a veteran of over 2,500 performances: with orchestra, in recital, lecture/recital, chamber ensemble as pianist, and as symphony and choral conductor. He has collaborated with Bernstein, Mehta, Ozawa, Monteux, Szell, Leinsdorf, Slatkin, Previn, Schwarz, Hamlisch, Levine, Tilson-Thomas, Haitink, and Ormandy among many others. He had his own national recital series on PBS and performed in the soundtrack of the movie Sophie's Choice In December 2003, Lorin Hollander received the "Music Has Power" award from Oliver Sacks' Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (of which he is a founding board member). The award honors his dedication to advancing the understanding of musical giftedness and mentorship, his support of learning and development through music, and for his advocacy of music in education and healing. Serving as consultant, he created the prototypes for the original outreach programs of the National Endowment of the Arts, American Symphony Orchestra League, MENC, International Federation of Music Therapy, the US Department of Education, among others. Following Regional Evaluations of more than 550 applicants representing 35 countries The 46th World Piano Competition invited almost 150 contestants representing 18 countries to perform at the World Headquarters at the Aronoff Center For The Arts in Cincinnati. An international jury of 7 judges representing 6 countries awarded cash prizes and performance opportunities. DONATE NOW A Brief History In 1932, four Poughkeepsie string playersGeorge Hagstrom, the orchestra's first conductor, Sydney Fleishman, Charles T. Miller and Dr. Charles Hoffman, all local businessmen, formed a nucleus of serious local musicians who would eventually become the Dutchess County Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra attracted amateurs and professionals alike plus a large number of students from surrounding high schools. Eventually, with the backing of local financial support, the orchestra began to perform its first public concerts in 1934. By the 1940s, the orchestra had grown to 93 musicians. The programs were largely classical, but some included contemporary works, some by local composers. In 1945, George Hagstrom stepped down as music director handing the baton over to Ole Windingstad, a European-trained conductor who came from the Bergen Symphony in Norway and the New Orleans Symphony. On October 29, 1953 under the direction of Maestro Windingstad, the orchestra presented a program of two Norwegian composers, Greig and Sparre-Olsen at New York's Carnegie Hall. It was also during Maestro Windingstad's tenure that the orchestra presented Prokofiev's

Acquisitions * = Acquired † = Deceased Major Figures in American Music Major Figures in American Music is the core unit of Oral History American Music. It consists of approximately 300 interviews with composers, performers, and other significant musicians. The first subjects were those most fragile in terms of age and health, such as Eubie Blake, Nadia Boulanger, Aaron Copland, Harry Partch, Charles Seeger, Claire Reis, and Virgil Thomson. Among other senior composers interviewed during the OHAM's first decade were John Cage, Lou Harrison, Ernst Krenek, Leo Ornstein, and William Schuman. As OHAM proceeded, composers actively involved in their careers were included and have been updated periodically. To name a few: John Adams, David Del Tredici, Lukas Foss, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Ned Rorem, Billy Taylor, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Oham's program also includes oral histories with emerging young talents, with the plan to track their careers as they unfold in the future. In addition to interviews with primary subjects, the core unit includes testimonies from secondary sources about George Gershwin, Harry Lawrence Freeman, Percy Grainger, and Arnold Schoenberg.
