UNSW Advertising Print this page MEDIA RELEASE MUSIC TO SUPPORT GIFTED EDUCATION 29 August 2001 World renowned concert pianist Lorin Hollander will perform in a benefit concert for the University of New South Wales' Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC) on 7 September. A former child prodigy himself, Dr Hollander has been an advocate for gifted education for many years and is donating his appearance to raise funds for GERRIC 's programs for gifted and talented Australian children. Although Dr Hollander's performance will comprise the major part of the program, nine young Australian musicians and singers, aged 17-20, will appear as supporting performers. According to Professor Miraca Gross, Director of GERRIC: "These young people are quite remarkable. I find it inspiring that they are willing to support GERRIC in its work to assist young people who may one day be equally talented in their own fields but who currently have not been assisted to develop their abilities into achievements." Dr Hollander is in Australia working at a number of high schools, giving Master Classes to musically gifted students, leading workshops on performance anxiety and working with teachers.

Z D Giusto Dacci Italian composer and pianist Parma, 1840 - Parma, 1915 Dacci was educated at the Royal Parma School of Music which he entered as a boarder at the age of eleven, and it was here he spent the rest of his working life as piano teacher, professor of harmony and eventually, in 1875, director and Composer in Residence. As director of the School he also kept a personal diary which is rich on anecdotes and gossip about the School and the city. When the School was closed in 1888 to make way for the new Music Conservatory he was passed over as director by Verdi in favor of Giovanni Bottesini and later Franco Faccio, but nevertheless Dacci remained on the staff as teacher of composition until his retirement in 1899. As a bachelor Dacci bequeathed his estate to the Conservatory to provide prizes for deserving students. His more than 500 compositions include songs, piano pieces, chamber music and fantasies on opera tunes for various instruments, including five for clarinet and piano. His perhaps most prominent pupil of composition was Arturo Toscanini. There were som clashes between teacher and student - already then showing his iron will. Toscanini used some of his time of to play cello in an opera orchestra which he was not supposed to and at some other time he participated in a revolt among the students refusing to get out of their beds to go to morning mass. With Toscanini these thing only resulted in reprimands and not expulsion - Dacci obviously didn't want to loose his best student.

Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau (1902-1991) opens with the last movement of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto in solid, Prussian style, befitting Arrau's German pedagogy. Jorge Bolet changes the mood considerably, rending up a suave interpretation of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue under one of the composer's acolytes, Paul Whiteman. The most beguiling moment comes when actor Burgess Meredith introduces the fifteen-year-old Lorin Hollander (b. 1944) to play Chopin's popular waltz in C-sharp Minor, then the piece that had got the New York critics agog, the last movement from Saint-Saens' "Egyptian" Concerto. More Saint-Saens from Philippe Entremont (b. 1934) in the familiar C Minor Concerto, the finale, with its durable cross between folk tune and church hymn. The last two American pianists, Byron Janis (b. 1928) and Grant Johannesen (b. 1921), each get two concertos: Johannesen has the last movement of the Gershwin Concerto in F and a silky opening movement from the ultimate charmer, the Grieg Concerto in A Minor. Cedros Ave., Solana Beach; $15; (858) 481-8140 "At a certain point, it became clear that all these projects were winding up at the same time and that it would be a busy year, and I was happy about it," said Keneally, who will perform selections from most of his new albums during his concert tonight at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. The most ambitious of his recent releases is "The Universe Will Provide," an orchestral opus Keneally recorded last year in Holland with Amsterdam's 52-piece Metropole Orkest. It came out in September on Vai's Favored Nations label. "Dog," by his four-man Mike Keneally Band, was released last month on Exowax, the label he launched in 1999 with longtime friend Scott Chatfield, his manager and business partner. Last week saw the release of "Vai Piano Reductions Vol. 1," an all-instrumental album available only from www.vai.com on the Internet. It features Keneally's solo piano interpretations of 11 compositions by Vai, whom he replaced as the "stunt guitarist" in Zappa's band in 1987.

FRENCH The McGill Chamber Music Orchestra supports cancer research The McGill Chamber Music Orchestra has formed an exciting fundraising partnership with the McGill Cancer Centre for its 2001-2002 concert series One third of the proceeds from the sale of tickets for three, four, five and six concerts purchased at full regular price will be donated to the McGill Cancer Research Centre. The 62 nd season, entitled Intimacy-Greatness, opened on October 8, 2001 at the Place des Arts Théâtre Maisonneuve with a Soirée Française featuring pianist Lorin Hollander. The remaining 6 concerts feature the work of the world’s greatest artists and Montreal’s finest musicians led by conductors Alexander and Boris Brott. All concerts are to take place at the Place des Arts Théâtre Maisonneuve, while “Handel’s Messiah” will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on November 26. “Music and medicine share common properties of healing. My family has been deeply and personally touched by the devastation of cancer. This time it's me behind the pen as I listen to Street Legal Grey will be back on Tuesday with Blood on the Tracks SACD review for Bob Dylan .
