July-August 2005 Faculty Profile Lorin Hollander Workshops Contact Info Lorin Hollander is a world-renowned concert pianist in the fifth decade of a continuous professional career that began with a Carnegie Hall debut at the age of eleven. He has performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world and is a veteran of nearly 2,000 performances. For more than 30 years Hollander has led community outreach and university residencies giving master classes, conducting youth orchestras, counseling students, guiding the gifted, holding seminars on stagefright and training mentors for the arts and sciences. He performs in the workplace, for lifelong learners, in hospitals, prisons, for hospice and with people at risk. He works with corporate leaders on the process of transformation in the workplace and explores in depth a multicultural understanding of human consciousness. Hollander has also participated in many international conferences: the American Psychiatric Association, the International Transpersonal Association, several of Larry Dossey's Alternative Therapies Conferences, the International Federation of Music Therapy and the Australasian Conference on the Gifted. He presented at the State of the World Forum 2000 held concurrently with the United Nations Millennium Summit in September, 2000. Captivating, classical or not By Ruth O. Bingham Special to the Star-Bulletin GEORGE Gershwin's music perches somewhat uneasily between classical and jazz. Sixty years after his death, people still ask whether it was "classical" or "jazz," whether he was "serious" or "popular" (as though jazz and popular composers are neither serious nor their works classical). One can only hope his music will someday outlast the questions. Yet the questions persist, no longer out of pure snobbishness, but because the distinction between classical and jazz idioms persists. And therein lies the uneasiness. There are good reasons why jazz is usually performed by jazz musicians and classical, by classical musicians. It is a rare artist, indeed, who can perform both well. Yesterday's Honolulu Symphony Masterworks concert celebrated the centennial of Gershwin's birth with an all-Gershwin Jubilee. The concert featured pianist Lorin Hollander in the Piano Concerto in F and the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers in excerpts from the opera "Porgy and Bess." Hollander, with the technique of a classical pianist and the soul of a jazz musician, played Gershwin as though born to it. Syncopations and complex rhythms danced from his hands. Hollander the philosopher dominated throughout: the concerto is rarely played so beautifully. Each phrase was nuanced with care, with thought, with feeling. His interpretation was melancholy and lyric rather than raucous and brash - which Gershwin can also be.

He has also served on the summer artist faculty of the Eastern Music Festival. He earned the Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He has studied and coached with many renowned artists including Lucille Monaghan, Veronica Jochum, Miklos Schwalb, Robert Helps, Seymour Bernstein, Gary Wolf, Ivan Davis and Lorin Hollander. Mr. Watkins is certified as a master teacher by the Music Teachers National Association. He was President of the American Matthay Association 1994-1998, and was president of Georgia Music Teachers Association from 1994-1996. Mr. Watkins has performed on the national convention programs of the College Music Society (St. Louis), Music Teachers National Association (Little Rock) and the American Matthay Association (Penn State University). The Lorin Hollander Award is given to a Tennessean whose influence has benefited arts education in general and/or the Tennessee Arts Academy in particular and has been awarded to such people as Steven Cohen, Jane Walters, and Martha McCrory. The award is named for the noted concert pianist who has been at the Academy on several occasions. “It is a pleasure to honor Solie Fott,” said Dr. Vernon Coffey, Commissioner of Education, “ for his many contributions to the arts in Tennessee.” Also honored at the June 19 banquet was Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Sheldon Harnick who is best known for his lyrics to the musical "Fiddler on the Roof." Solie Fott is retired professor and chair of the music department at Austin Peay State University. A graduate of George Peabody College for Teachers, he taught in Nashville Public Schools before pursuing a university teaching career. He had the major responsibility in the establishment of a Faculty Sub-Council to the Joint Presidents' Council of the state Board of Regents and served as its first chair. A past-president of the Tennessee Music Educators Association and the Tennessee String Teachers Association, Dr. Fott has been active in many professional organizations as well as a conductor, adjudicator, and clinician at various music festivals. He has performed with the Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville symphonies.
