The presentation is free and open to the public and may be of particular interest to people pursuing careers in music education, performance or music therapy. The lecture is sponsored by West Music and the UI School of Music. Hollander will perform George Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue" and Aaron Copland’s Piano Concerto with the Cedar Rapids Symphony at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, and will repeat the concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24 at the Iowa City West High School Auditorium. Lorin Hollander is in the fifth decade of a professional career that began with a Carnegie Hall debut at age 11. JED DISTLER - ClassicsToday.com Elaine Greenfield's Debut On Piano Is Admirable It's refreshing to hear a young pianist present a debut recital of the sort given by Elaine Greenfield last Sunday afternoon in Carnegie Recital Hall. Not only was the choice of music well-balanced and unhackneyed, but each piece was admirably tailored to the pianist's capabilities and temperament. Miss Greenfield, who lives and teaches in Vermont possesses a formidable technique that she uses more for intimate expressive purposes than for flashy surface effect. This was especially apparent in Schumann's deceptively difficult "Papillons." Each tricky phrase was exquisitely turned, textures merged with crystalline clarity and the entire work was infused with a tonal warmth and graceful airiness that caught the capricious nature of the music perfectly. A major proportion of Miss Greenfield's sympathies apparently lie in the French repertory, for she offered a generous selection from Debussy's second book Of Preludes, Ravel's "Oiseaux tristes" and Faure's Theme and Variations (Op.). The Preludes were particularly well conceived, characterfully etched in a clearly drawn, rhythmically strong profile that made a welcome contrast to the mushy Impressionistic haze that many pianists consider appropriate for this composer. "Temperament, Technique, and Virtuosity": Winning Traits for Pianist Kairy Koshoeva By Marci Janas '91 "She has everything: temperament, technique, virtuosity and emotion." With this assessment, Professor of Pianoforte Monique Duphil pretty much sums up what led to Kairy Koshoeva winning the third prize at the 25 D'Angelo Young Artists Competition in Piano, held at Mercyhurst College in late April. Koshoeva, an artist diploma student from Kyrgyztan, was one of three finalists in what was her first American competition, performing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor with the D'Angelo Competition Orchestra, conducted by Frank Collura. No first prize was awarded. "First of all," she says, "the level of her playing is very high. She's really an accomplished pianist. But there is in her playing something very bright, alive, and sensitive that attracted me, and that reflects her personality. I was not at all surprised to hear that she'd won third prize at the D'Angelo. It was very well-deserved." Sitemap News from 2004 Local Institute for Music and Neurologic Function at Beth Abraham Receives Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation Grant October 6, 2004, (Bronx, NY) The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) at Beth Abraham announced today that it has been awarded a $5,000 Quality of Life Grant from the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation to support music therapy services in its recently opened Music Has Power™ Recording Studio. The IMNF’s therapeutic recording studio enables people with spinal cord injuries and other central nervous system disorders to make music using specially adapted MIDI-based instruments, and to record their own music in a way that restores function, provides a medium for creativity, and improves thequality of life. "We have found that clients are eager to participate in our recording studio program,” said Dr. Concetta Tomaino, director of the IMNF. “This generous award will increase access to this vital therapy from 40 to 60 participants a week. We are delighted to receive a grant from this national foundation, which acknowledges the innovative work of our music therapy program.” For many clients with injuries or neurologic disorders, music provides, at its most basic level, a powerful motivation for therapeutic exercise. Music therapists may also use the rhythmic stimuli of music to help clients improve their gait or balance. The first half of the concert also will feature Heltzel's performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2. A Portland native, Heltzel was a winner of the "Young Artists at the Schnitz" concerto competition at the age of 15, and performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 at the competition's gala concert. Two years later he was featured in a live performance on Garrison Keillor's National Public Radio program "Prairie Home Companion." Our History Past Festival Artists In August, 2005 The Festival at Sandpoint will celebrate its 23rd season of music in Sandpoint. The Festival now draws audiences upwards of 20,000 per season throughout the region to its diverse and eclectic summer concert series, presented on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. In addition to its summer concert series, The Festival at Sandpoint offered a summer music institute from 1985-1996 under the guidance of Artistic Director Maestro Gunther Schuller. Recipient of a Pulitzer Prize for Music, a MacCarthur Foundation "Genius" Award, two Guggenheim fellowships, the Darius Milhaud Award, the Rodgers and Hammerstein Award, three Grammy Awards and many other honors, Mr. Schuller developed, nurtured and expanded the Schweitzer Institute of Music, offering advanced study to young professional musicians in the areas of composition, chamber, jazz and conducting.
