Dick Whitney -
Selected stories for my Autobiography Lorin Hollander

Lorin playing our piano - October 1963 The year was 1963. Lorin Hollander, a famous classical pianist (age 19!), traveled to town to give a concert at Southbridge High School. The Tri-Community Concert Association had invited Lorin to Southbridge and my mother offered to host Lorin for that day. He needed a place to practice and stay prior to his concert. At that time we had a Steinhart upright piano, which was not ideal but served its purpose. I recall being very impressed by watching him practice. I remember him playing excerpts from "Pictures at an Exhibition". My father also requested he play "Rhapsody in Blue" which was a favorite of Dad's (and mine). I especially remember being impressed that Lorin said he practiced between 8 and 10 hours every day. He also said that one time he flexed the muscles in his arm during his practicing so much that it broke his watch band. My sister Sue and I were also interested to hear that Lorin went to school with Leslie Gore. At that time there was a big hit of hers titles "It's My Party (and I'll cry if I want too)". May 7, 2004 Concert pianist and educational leader, Lorin Hollander, teaches Master class The Augsburg College music department hosted Lorin Hollander on Monday, April 19, 2004. The internationally famous concert pianist led a master class with Augsburg student chamber ensembles in Sateren Auditorium. Hollander's beliefs and methods regarding education are deeply rooted in the transformational model, with a focus on spiritual and personal growth, and exploration into human consciousness and creativity. Senior history and vocal performance major, Keely Holcomb, appreciated Hollander's message to enjoy the music. "I like the idea of sitting back and enjoying the music for music’s sake." She went on to describe the technique he relayed to allow for a better comprehension of the music, "Instrumentalists have to sing to understand music and singers have to dance." "I took a new, refreshing look at performing away with me after the class," said Emily Forsberg, junior, vocal performance major. "He concentrated on connecting emotions with music, and portraying those emotions to your audience. It is really great to look at music that way. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Hollander."

His research at various universities throughout the U.S. is involved in an exploration of the primal, core inner human experience of all people. Hollander states that "Shamanic and indigenous cultures, the spiritual disciplines of east and west, have called us to recognize that this core emptiness, void or hollowness is the arena in which an inner pain is inextricably linked with the creativity imbued in the music and arts of all peoples."
