The Australian Chamber Orchestra with Richard Tognetti, artistic director and leader , featuring Angela Hewitt, piano
Hailed by critics as "the best chamber orchestra on earth," the Australian Chamber Orchestra returns with one of the keyboard's pre-eminent Bach interpreters in a performance sure to be a SummerFest audience favorite. Join the Australian Chamber Orchestra with Angela Hewitt on Thursday, August 11 at 7:30pm at the Civic Theater in downtown San Diego. The ACO was founded in 1975 and consists of 17 string players at its core. Collaborations with various musicians contributes greatly to the ACO's stylistic versatility. An interesting fact - the violinists and violists of the ACO perform standing up, a practice that was common in earlier centuries. Richard Tognetti was appointed as artistic director and lead violin of the ACO in 1989 and his arrangements have helped enhance the chamber orchestra repertoire. Tognetti's music may already be familiar to audiences as he co-composed the score for Peter Weir's film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World , starring Russell Crowe. The

Originally appeared in La Folia The great cycle of forty-eight keyboard preludes and fugues that Bach created for didactic purposes in The Well-Tempered Clavier is one of the sublime monuments of Western art. As Angela Hewitt aptly observes in her thorough and informative notes accompanying her recording of the work, "It is an inexhaustible treasure trove of the greatest possible music, combining contrapuntal wizardry with his immense gift for expressing human emotion in all its forms. Bach amazes us by absolutely never running out of steam. In The Well-Tempered Clavier , we find a piece to suit every mood and every occasion." During the years 1717-1723, Bach was employed as Capellmeister By the time Bach composed the preludes and fugues constituting The Well-Tempered Clavier In the two books of The Well-Tempered Clavier , he brought all of his insight, learning and superior compositional technique to their highest fruition. "She is almost too good to be true—a vital artist, a beautiful woman, a regal presence."
The Washington Post
Recognized worldwide as one of today's most exciting vocal stars, Denyce Graves continues to gather popular and critical acclaim on four continents. USA Today identified her as "one of the singers most likely to be an operatic superstar of the 21st century." The combination of her expressive, rich vocalism, elegant stage presence and exciting theatrical abilities allows her to pursue a wide breadth of operatic portrayals as well as to delight audiences in concert and recital. Ms. Graves is particularly well-known for her portrayals of the title roles in Carmen and Samson et Dalila. These signature roles have brought her to the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, Royal Opera-Convent Garden, San Francisco Opera, Arena di Verona, Deutsche Opera Berlin, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and the Festival Maggio Musicale in Florence, among other venues. Ms. Graves has appeared with the major orchestras and conductors around the world and is a much-sought-after recitalist.

Turangalîla (tur-ang-ah-lee-la) means "love song and hymn of joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death." Shimmering with orchestral color and character, this piece is nothing less than monumental – a true study in contrasts – mystery with ecstasy, brightness with darkness, explosive sound with passages of near inaudibility. Variations on "I Got Rhythm" is a charming orchestral version of Gershwin’s 1930s hit. Then, travel to Fall River, Massachusetts, and experience Morton Gould's retelling of the legendary Borden murders. Close your eyes and you may even hear Lizzie Borden swinging the axe.

Ravel: Miroirs - Alborada del gracioso
This is a reminder that Angela Hewitt doesn't only play - or record - the music of Bach, as she has already shown us with her disc of Messiaen, issued a couple of years ago. Here, in this 2CD-set, she gives us the complete solo piano music of Ravel. (And, unlike some of the others on the market, this really is complete, containing as it does the very early, 1893, 'Sérénade grotesque', discovered comparatively recently.) Miss Hewitt's elegant and poised playing-style familiar from her Bach recordings serves her especially well in the piano music of this fastidious French master. Recorded in Reitstadel, Neumarkt, Germany, on 20-23 March 2000 and Henry Wood Hall, London, on 11-14 August 2001

Angela Hewitt , the leading Bach specialist of today's pianists, had a lengthy queue afterwards for Holy Ink (the CD signing ritual). Purchasers of her new CD, which includes all the fascinating arrangements in this programme, should not be disappointed.
Bach played on the piano has been popular through several generations, and continues to be so with good reason during the relatively new 'authentic' era; the possibilities for expressive dynamic shading and colouring with pedal are hard to relinquish. Angela Hewitt enlivens every piece she plays; seen live her palpable enjoyment is a tonic and with her beauty and poise she has the audience in the palm of her hand, delaying applause with ease to achieve continuity within groups. The two Toccatas were given 'straight' and the rest of the programme sampled arrangements of famous pianists and composers of the past, providing a historical perspective of changing tastes. No-one listening to Angela Hewitt was inclined to carp at their romanticism.

Reviewed by Peter Grahame Woolf Bach's most popular work for solo keyboard scores over fifty entries in the Classical Catalogue and these two, received recently, offer a fascinating evening's listening played in tandem. Johann Sebastian was sparing with performance instructions, so there is ample scope for individual interpretation; both are recommendable. Terence Charlston explains how the Italian musical style pervades Bach's keyboard works, even though distant travel was impossible for him and a thirst for music of other lands had to be satisfied through contact with visiting musicians and by studying scores. Charlston inaugurated the Historical Practice course as Head of Early Music in the Royal Academy of Music, and he knows everything about how to make his chosen instrument expressive, by rhythmic variety and subtle agogic treatment of key moments, even though the harpsichord lacks the piano's sustaining pedal, or the 'swell' of later organs. He is equally an emotional and a scholarly musician, and his playing will convince some collectors who prefer their Bach on the piano.
