American pianist Garrick Ohlsson (b. 1948) celebrates his 57th birthday today. He was the first American ever to win the Chopin International Competition, which he conquered in 1970. We here him play the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, as Kasimierz Kord conducts the Warsaw Philharmonic. He then accompanies mezzo Ewa Podles as she sings Chopin’s “Wiosna” (Spring). Summary: Last month, Sunday Morning's Julie Copeland visited a castle in Umbria, for the inaugural music festival of Canadian-born pianist Angela Hewitt, who lives part time in this beautiful region. Now known internationally for her Bach playing, Angela was here early this year for concerts with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, with whom she’s recorded all the Bach piano concertos. In this concert on a gorgeous summer night, she brilliantly accompanied French Canadian soprano Dominique Labelle in a program which included some ravishing French songs of Faure and Saint Saens.

Acclaimed pianist to perform
Since Angela Hewitt’s triumph at the Toronto Bach competition, she has been hailed as "the Bach pianist par excellence of her generation" (The Sunday Times, London, 1999). In 1994, she embarked on a 10-year project to record all the major keyboard works by Bach for the Hyperion label, and all releases so far are receiving worldwide acclaim for their artistry, "effortlessly eclipsing all competitors" (Gramophone, 1997). Hewitt will present a master class at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, in Wiedemann Recital Hall. Selected WSU students will play for Hewitt. The class is open to the public. The Piano Six Piano Six artists to schools and concert halls in small or isolated communities throughout Canada. During the ten-year life of this project, each artist has pledged to take time out from his or her busy international career to tour solo for ten days each year for Piano Six , performing in a different region each year. In order to give as many communities as possible a chance to participate in these extraordinary tours, the artists offer their services to the project for a fraction of their recital fees. Says Piano Six founder Janina Fialkowska, "we're especially anxious to reach out to those communities who think - quite wrongly -that they're too small or too far away to attract a major concert artist". One of the project's special features is that artists are made available to host communities for not only a public recital but also some form of educational out-reach event, such as a school mini-concert, a masterclass for area piano students or a teachers' workshop. Fialkowska admits thatthetoursinvolve "unbelievable amounts of work - some of us go out for ten days and give twenty-two performances". As mentally and physically challenging as these tours can be, however, she and her colleagues feel strongly that their efforts are repaid by the enjoyment and satisfaction that they derive from their personal encounters with music lovers all across the country. Indeed, for the members of this extraordinary sextet

Angela Hewitt at Zankel Hall
Kathleen left the office at seven sharp yesterday, and I quitted the apartment shortly thereafter, so we both got to Carnegie Hall in plenty of time for an eight-o'clock curtain. Never mind that there are no curtains at Zankel Hall, which is tucked into Carnegie's basement. We had time to spare for a trip to the 55th Street Deli. Kathleen was feeling peckish and headachy and wanted to get some Raisinets. (Did you know about CandyDirect ?). We sauntered back to the entrance to Zankel Hall, cluelessly imagining that we were there before everybody else. Not until the massive but vacant elevator doors opened on the Parterre level to resounding applause did I think to look at the tickets: make that a seven-thirty curtain. We had just missed the first work on the program, Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, and we would have missed the second work, the much longer French Overture in b, as well, if an usher hadn't taken pity on us and shepherded us to the invalids' seating section to one side. Ask me how I discovered Angela Hewitt, and I can't tell you, but I began accumulating her Bach recordings on Hyperion some time ago. I won't say that they're my favorites, because I could never derogate Andr¡s Schiff or Keith Jarrett, but they're up there, and when I worked through the schedule last fall in search of a good concert to introduce us to Zankel Hall - I deliberately....
