Thirteen years later, during the year that is indelibly associated with the Wright brothers' first aircraft flight, were born three giants of the keyboard: Vladimir Horowitz in Russia, Rudolf Serkin in Austria and Claudio Arrau in Chile. Each was to go on to a stellar career - and there's a fair amount of good film footage available. On this DVD, we see and hear Arrau in a flawless account of Liszt's Gnomenreigen, Horowitz in the much aired - and magnificently addressed - Etude in D sharp minor by Scriabin. Serkin is superb in Schubert (an excerpt from the Sonata in B flat, D 960) and a maddeningly brief snip from Beethoven's Les Adieux Sonata. On this fascinating DVD, the main work on offer is Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 4 with Arrau a magisterial soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Beginning the program with the simple and direct "Fischerlied" was a much better choice for this venue than trying to create such a quiet initial mood with "Lied eines Schiffers an die Dioskuren", as I did in Panama. The audience, which consisted almost entirely of undergraduates who were required to attend the concert for their music appreciation classes, applauded after every single song, which tested our powers of concentration and bogged down the momentum of my oh-so-carefully chosen program. I was also conscious of our need to finish singing within the allotted 50 minute time slot, so I didn't allow myself as much resting time between songs, nor did we leave the stage between groups of songs in order to sip water, stretch, and refresh ourselves. We did strong work, but when Reiko and I are completely on our game, it feels almost effortless. There was some effort involved here.

Classical CD Reissues II December 2001 BEETHOVEN: Violin Sonatas: No. 1 in D Major, Op. 12, No.1; No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 12, No. 3; No. 10 in G Major, Op. 96 David Oistrakh, violin/Sviatoslav Richter, piano DOREMI DHR-7800 67:14 (Distrib. Allegro) The collaboration of the great Russian artists David Oistrakh (1908-1974) and Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) came relatively late in their careers, likely a testament to their respective temperaments and to Oistrkakh's loyalty to his regular accompanists, Lev Oberin and Vladimir Yampolsky. The association between Oistrakh and Richter formally began in 1967. Their EMI (via Melodiya) recordings of Brahms and Franck enjoy a power and energy uniquely theirs. The Beethoven violin sonatas, here in a May 6, 1970 rendition, were not new to Richter, who had traversed much of the standard repertory with Oleg Kagan. The readings here are restrained, thoughtful, and well-propelled. Oistrakh, of course, is always right in the middle of the musical marshmallow with wonderful intonation. Some of the miking is piano-heavy, but Richter can subito enough to allow even diminuendo violin passages to be heard clearly. The theme-and-variations in Op. 12, No. 1 has a real sense of direction, a strong personality. The wit and momentum of the finale in Op. 12, No. 3 is undeniable. For sheer elegance of line, the G Major Sonata is superb: plangent, expansive, a real tour de force for two performers who clearly came to musical and temperamental consonance. Kudos to DOREMI for an important addition to the legacy of two monumental personalities.

Harmonia Mundi): This is perhaps the most colorful, the most ambitious of the series Testament has devoted to the art of Andre Cluytens (1905-1967), the Belgian-born leader whose tastes for Gallic and Germanic repertory dominated the EMI catalogue from the 1950's through the early and mid-1960's. What I like about this excellent restoration is the sheer breadth of the repertory, the ingenuous colors of Bizet to the more decadent romanticism of Roussel, and the bold, clear lines in Ravel. These inscriptions date 1953-1963, with the Ravel's Daphnis being the earliest. The suites demand the use of the chorus, so we get a good portion of the entire ballet; the Alborada originally came as a filler for the LP set. While the performances were recorded in monaural sound, the orchestral presence is quite strong, with our ears right up against the flailing pizzicati in the Spanish caprice. This is the first CD instantiation of the 1957 Barque sur l'ocean . Definitely lean cuisine. Vibrant orchestral definition marks the 1967 Spider's Feast, whose LP incarnation was a favorite of mine. Butterflies and ephemera-isn't that the point of this slightly erotic ballet? Ravishing restoration by Testament, this is a superb addition to the Cluytens legacy.

The Humanities Programs in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies at Virginia Tech, in conjunction with other university and community affiliates, is promoting a variety of events focusing on this year’s theme, "Humanities and the Arts." The Commonwealth Humanities Endowment Week runs Oct. 27-Nov. 8. The piano trios will be performed by Linda Plaut on violin, Elizabeth Austin on cello, and Judy Bevans on piano. The program is free and open to the public. Roanoke Symphony musicians Linda Plaut and Elizabeth Austin and Blacksburg keyboard artist Judy Bevans will present the recital, which will be part of the annual celebration of Commonwealth Humanities Endowment Week at Virginia Tech. Performing Arts Library International Piano Archives at Maryland The Collection Bruce Hungerford The Australian pianist Bruce Hungerford was born in Korumburra, Victoria, November 24, 1922. He received his initial education in Melbourne, and later studied piano with Ignaz Friedman in Sydney in 1944. During the same year, Hungerford insisted on playing for conductor Eugene Ormandy, while Ormandy was on a tour in Melbourne. Ormandy eventually arranged for Hungerford to go to America in 1945 and study with Ernest Hutcheson at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. After two years Hungerford felt that he needed to move on and again sought Ormandy's advice. He suggested going to see Olga Samaroff, who offered to take Hungerford on as a student in Philadelphia. In October of 1947, Hungerford moved to Philadelphia and began working with Samaroff, but continued to look for a mentor. Hungerford was deeply disappointed with his lessons with Samaroff and approached Dame Myra Hess early in 1948 for advice. He received coaching and lessons from Hess during each of her visits to the United States and maintained a close personal relationship with her until her death in 1965. It was Hess who suggested that Hungerford study with Carl Friedberg, and she recommended Hungerford as a student. This began a long and fruitful relationship that lasted until Friedberg's death. Hungerford studied intermittently with Friedberg for about eighteen months and was then selected in the Fall of 1950 as the recipient of the first annual Carl Friedberg Alumni Association Scholarship, providing him with tuition for 25 lessons with Friedberg. At the first scholarship lesson Friedberg "talked for quite a while first and said that he had given me this scholarship as he is convinced I have the goods. I am no longer a student but a master, and I am to converse with him now with that understanding."

JUDGES 2000 PIANO COMPETITION Ruth C. Friedberg, Andrew Mihalso, and John Moore Selected as Preliminary Judges Ruth C. Friedberg Andrew Mihalso John Moore is Co-Chair of the Music-Drama-Art Department at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from Phillips University in Oklahoma and the Master of Music degree from Tulsa University. In 1996 his professional portfolio was deemed adequate for equivalency to a doctoral degree for purposes of accreditation. While at Tulsa University Mr. Moore studied Piano Performance under Aldo Mancinelli, winner of the Busoni International Competition. He has performed throughout Texas and Oklahoma and in Mexico, Germany, Frnace, Czechoslovakia, Austria and South Vietnam. Since 1976 he has been the Principal Keyboardist for the Texas Bach Choir and Collegium. Professor Moore served as Chair of the St. Mary's University Department of Music from 1977 to 1994 and led the Department to its first accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music in 1982-83.
