Show full synopsis The apparent simplicity of this beautiful little piece comes from what was, by this stage of his career, Humphrey Jennings ' huge experience and skill in editing. For example, during the faster passages of Hess's vigorous performance, the shot length decreases precisely in time with the music, while the rate of cutting between long shots, medium shots and close ups of the pianist, her hands on the keyboard, and the audience at the edge of the stage increase. This apparently effortless cutting requires a deep understanding of the film viewing experience. At the beginning of the war, Myra Hess was already a pianist of international stature, specialising in the great German composers. She had performed in Austria and Germany and travelled widely before the war. When appearing on film, she is usually performing Mozart and Beethoven, for whom she had a special passion and flair and who, for the British during the war, strongly represented a sense of culture and freedom; pointedly allowing the British to publicly demonstrate that they did not have an anti-German racism, and to draw a cultural distinction between themselves and the Nazis.

Jane Carlson
Jane Carlson was born in Hartford, Connecticut where she discovered a love for the piano at an early age. She took up formal piano lessons, which continued through her high school years and, upon graduation, was granted a regional scholarship to the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Virginia. Following her studies there, she moved on to the Juilliard School in New York. Carlson studied with both Carl Friedberg and Dame Myra Hess. She then joined the faculty of the Preparatory Division of the Juilliard School. At various times, Carlson also taught at The University of California-Berkeley and at Dartmouth College. As a pianist, she toured throughout the world, from Iceland to Norway to Korea to England, performing both contemporary and standard works. She was particularly identified with the music of Paul Hindemith, performing his "Ludus Tonalis" on many occasions, and earning the esteem of the composer for her interpretation. The International Music Foundation presents Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts at the Cultural Center each Wednesday at noon, as well as monthly Young People's Concerts. Founded and directed by Al Booth, the International Music Foundation creates performance opportunities for talented young artists and builds future audiences. Over the past seventeen years the Hess concerts have helped launch some of today's brightest stars, including sopranos June Anderson and Barbara Hendricks, violinist Nigel Kennedy, cellist Nathaniel Rosen, and pianist Barry Douglas. Young People's Concerts often serve as school children's introduction to classical music, and concerts by young people's ensembles, such as the City Youth Strings provide valuable performance opportunities for youth. Myra Hess (February 25, 1890 - November 25, 1965) was a British pianist. Born in London, Hess studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Tobias Matthay. Her debut came in 1907 when she played Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with Thomas Beecham conducting. She went on to tour through Britain and North America. She gained even greater fame during World War II when, with all concert halls closed, she organised a series of lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery, playing in many herself. For these concerts, she was created Dame in 1941. Hess was best known in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann, but had a wide repertoire ranging from Domenico Scarlatti to contemporary works - she gave the premiere of both the Piano Sonata and Piano Concerto by Howard Ferguson. She also played a good amount of chamber music, and performed in a piano duo with her cousin Irene Scharrer. She made a well known arrangement for piano of the chorale prelude from Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata No. 147 ( Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben ) under the title "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring".

Symphonic Etudes , Op. 13 (1852) Beth Levin [December 2003.] I open the score. At a swift glance I notice the graceful slurs and dynamic markings, a hidden trill in the tenor voice, the music laid out in a thick texture, symphonic in scope. I note: Andante, 52 to the quarter, C-sharp minor, Common time (4/4). Even as a visual work of art, the theme to the Symphonic Etudes is as perfect in form as a Japanese print. Thema The opening chords seem to carry the weight of worldly sadness. A descending arpeggio in C-sharp minor supported by chords succeeds in resisting forward motion, giving the theme its somber beauty. These opening notes will form the basis for much of the material to follow. The second half of the phrase opens up to A major for a brief taste of joy before returning to the minor mode. The melody continues in poignant expression often above the chords I and V, the simplest and clearest suggestion of a musical key. Beneath a fermata (or hold) lies the V chord which closes the theme as it connects us to Variation I. The direction

Claude Debussy, one of the seminal figures in twentieth-century music, composed the most original body of piano music after Liszt. In the six generations of the Debussy family preceding his birth, there appears to have been no trace of musical ability.
The eldest of four children, Achille-Claude, as he was called in childhood, received, aside from music, the bare minimum of education. His first real piano teacher was Antoinette Maute de Fleurville, Verlaine's mother-in-law and a pupil of Chopin, a fact of which Debussy was certainly proud.
The Paris Conservatoire accepted him at the age of ten. Although brilliantly endowed musically, he revolted against the rigid system that was inflicted upon him. Under the celebrated Marmontel, his piano professor, Debussy's pianistic gifts ripened. However, his parents were unhappy that he never captured a first prize in piano playing at the Conservatoire. Their hopes that he would eventually earn a living as a professional virtuoso vanished.
In harmony class Claude was impatient with the stringent rules by which he had to abide. He called César Franck a "modulating machine". When someone asked, "What rules do you follow?" the bright but insolent youngster replied, "mon plasir." Later in life he was to use his caustic wit and glib pen as an idiosyncratic music critic.

BOB GARFIELD: In a place as large and as diverse as America, there's no single program that can qualify as a universally shared cultural experience. Certainly not this one. So in our time of crisis, common threads that unite us are not all that easy to find. On the Media's Sara Fishko looks back to an earlier era for inspiration.
SARA FISHKO: Since September 11th I've found myself thinking about Dame Myra Hess. Myra Hess was a British pianist who became world famous as the organizer and performer of lunchtime concerts in London during the Blitz in World War II.

"But, Daddy, do you think she'll remember you after so many years?" my sixteen-year-old daughter, Betsy, asked. We were driving from our suburban home to Worcester (MA.) center.
"Well, thirty years is a long time. Hell, I doubt if she'll even recognize me."
"You don't look so old, Daddy, even if your hair is gray."
I reached over and gently touched her cheek. Gray? I was virtually bald. But I was still Betsy's shining knight.
Our destination was Mechanics Hall, a Greek Revival auditorium, an acoustical marvel, built during the Civil War. We were to hear the famous pianist Victoria Kendall play the D Minor Mozart Concerto with the Boston Symphony.
I had heard her play the piece often (without an orchestra) on the campus of the University of Chicago when we were students. The daughter of a wealthy family, she was only eighteen and I was twenty-three, a veteran fresh from the war in the South Pacific, living off a meager stipend under the GI Bill.
"It's too bad Ma caught the flu," Betsy said ruefully.

Since her professional debut in 1957 at the age of seventeen, when she performed the formidable Third Concerto by Rachmaninov, Ann Schein, has concertized all over the world. Her teachers included Mieczyslaw Münz, Dame Myra Hess and Artur Rubinstein. She is currently on the piano faculty of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. This all-Schumann disc is her debut recording on Ivory Classics. Closely associated with these Schumann masterpieces for over forty years, Ann Schein interprets these works with a rare understanding and authority.
"In the 1960's the American pianist Ann Schein had a big success with Rachmaninov's Third Concerto. Davidsbundlertanze and Humoresque have been part of Schein's repertoire since the early days of her career- indeed she played the former at her Carnegie Hall debut in 1962. Schumann's popular Arabesque is performed fluently, the coda beautifully contemplative. Recorded at Spencerville Church in Maryland, the sound is resonant and full." International Piano Quarterly — Summer 2001
"Wonderful playing continuing the tradition of two of her teacher's, Rubinstein and Hess. Technically impeccable, grounded in the Russian tradition - interpretatively simple and direct a la Artur, warm enveloping tone included. I strongly urge you to purchase this disc; you will see that in this modern age, the Romantic School of piano playing lives on."
